This over the top episode, written by noneother than master of the macabre Robert Bloch, is relatable to many actors --but you don't go to the extreme this chap does! Robert Duvall, in an early role and very effective, plays Bart, a down an out actor who FINALLY has the chance at securing a part in a good stage production. Only problem is that an old frenemy is auditioning for the same gig, and has a chance at getting it. What to do? Just kill him!
This campy story owes so much to Robert Bloch, particularly the way Bart decides to "get rid" of the body, which is fairly gruesome. In fact, this may be the most gory episode of the entire series. Well directed by another member of the macabre, John Newland, long associated with the creepy show, ONE STEP BEYOND, very similar in concept to TWILIGHT ZONE.
Hitch had to snag Newland for this one, who was both an actor and enormously popular tv director for years. He does a marvelous job with the cast. Carole Eastman guest stars, long a friend of Jack Nicholson, who also contributed to co-writing many of his classic films. Look for David Lewis, best known as playing the warden on BATMAN and popular character actor Bartlett Robinson as Donald. William Schallert, everywhere on tv, plays the police detective. Beware!
This is outstanding material for Hitch. Not to be missed. SEASON 7 EPISODE 14 remastered Universal dvd box set.
