Failed spin off featuring no cast members other than Wojo
kevinolzak1 June 2014
This second half of "Wojo's Girl" is set entirely in Wojo's apartment, as new girlfriend Nancy (Darlene Parks) has moved in, redecorated to some extent, trying to adjust to living together. What was originally conceived as a possible spin off titled OFF DUTY, alternating the home lives of various characters results in one solitary slog for Wojo and Nancy, long after the cancellation of previous spin off FISH. Nancy is a former prostitute anxious to put her past behind her, while the sports obsessed Wojo remains sensitive to the subject, as he always was. Their endless, usually awkward, banter makes for a pretty dull show, especially since she made no further appearances. Although Wojo talks with Barney on the telephone, this remains the only episode in which Capt. Miller does not appear, just Wojo and Nancy for the whole half hour.

Warning: Spoilers
And I can see why (it is so badly rated).

There is no chemistry between these two.

Wojo's previous, moral problems with escorts gets put on display here. And though I always found it annoying during the series. It ruins this episode. As he makes one weird statement or movement/gesture after another.

She is trying to make the relationship work. And Wojo seems to alternate between helping it along and trying to ignore it. Like he wants the gal. But his morals want him to not date an ex-call girl.

However, this is not handled in a charming way. But rather in an adolescent fashion. And Wojo's normal 'sweetness/innocence' just gets drowned out by this immature behavior.

The female character is rather charming. The actress (Darlene Parks) reminds me of a poor man's Michelle Pfeiffer (in her youth). With a very, expressive face. And that combination made her compelling to watch. Surprising that she was not more successful as an actress.

Basically, the way Wojo treats her/the relationship just ruins the entire episode (for me).

Later in the series. When Wojo was more mature/open-minded...this might have worked.

But not now.

Sitcoms should be funny. This episode is not funny.

We get it, Wojo doesnt know how to commit. Thats not enough material for a 30 minute episode.

The alleged couple spends the whole time being awkward and irritable and angry and they fight a lot. That isnt as humorous as it seems. Theres almost no real jokes, just unpleasant interactions between Stan Wojo and his girl Nancy, a woman we heard about a couple times and never saw before. Also a lot of dead silence where I guess the audience is supposed to think or assume. I suspect the biggest issue is the premise: These two people clearly dont know each other well and for not reason thats been explained yet, they choose to move in together. Thats a lazy premise without much hope for an entertaining half hour of TV and the writers put in no effort to make it funny or dramatic. Its good enough for maybe one short scene in a large story.

Even hardcore Barney Miller fans can safely skip this episode. It adds nothing to the series and slows you down.
