A Good Old Detective Episode; GIVE IT A TRY!!!
Batman. The Animated Series (1992) Season 1. Seventh episode in order of production, 13th in order of appearance.

-------P. O. V. (Point of View)-------

_______A Good Old Detective Episode; GIVE IT A TRY!!!

Seeing that this episode has an average score of 6.6 among the users, in my opinion just means that they don´t remember the episode or that most users that voted don´t like detective stories much, which is completely fine; everyone has the right to have his own taste; nevertheless, I sincerely think that all Batman viewers, either if they consider themselves fans of the Dark Knight or not, should give a second SLOWER TRY to this episode and let its detective plot have the time to catch them within the story at hand.

Unlike other episodes where we are given the necessary elements to know what happened right from the start, in this case we have to listen to what each one of the parts has to say about it and reconstruct the case; we find ourselves listening to three different stories about what happened.

...And even when the complete truth maybe will never be revealed as at least one of the three implicated seems not to want it to be really known, let´s hope everything will work out all right in the story with the info at hand...

A good old detective story of the Batman and one that, in my humble opinion, deserves a much higher average score; I understand that not all of us like the same kind of stories; maybe my 9 is too high, but I want to think that, even if you are among those who normally prefer more spectacular and dynamic stories, this episode should be given a chance to rank among your favorite ones from season one, or at least, get a slightly higher score...how about an 8?

Anyway, there are many good detective stories in the BATMAN screen versions, but given that this was one of the first episodes of being produced in this series, I think it also deserves the credit of having helped to establish the 1992´s BATMAN as the most interesting cartoon about the character.

Almost Like A Film Noir
ccthemovieman-11 July 2007
Story-wise, this was the first one I saw that wasn't anything to rave about. It was okay; a little different in that it was a straight crime story, almost like an old film-noir from the 1940s, but no fascinating villain character that usually makes these episodes fun. It's basically three cops telling their version of what went down at a sting that went awry. One of the cops, the obnoxious and anti-Batman guy, "Harvey Bullock," is the liar of the three. One annoying PC aspect: the bravest, strongest cop, of course, is the female one. Puh-leeze, that tougher- than males-cop has been so unrealistically overdone every since "Charlie's Angels." Here, the woman literally a throws a big guy across a room. Sorry, it doesn't happen

Nonetheless, the thing that makes this episode worth watching is the stunning art work. If ever a cartoon from a comic book ever came to life in animation, this series is it and this episode gives the best example I've seen. The drawings, especially the facial close-ups, look like a big version of something straight out of a Batman comic. Unlike other drawings I've seen (the animated Superman series, for instance), the artists here truly make you think you are looking at a comic book that has come to life

'P.O.V.' is a pretty good story centered on vantage point - specifically from the viewpoint of the police. Three officers sit before review, offering their own sides of the story as to why a sting operation went wrong. Here, we really get Montoya as passionate patrolwoman, as well as Bullock's deflection of blame to his fellow officers. But mostly it builds Batman up as a legend as seen from street level.

It's also a gorgeous episode, and a fine example of Spectrum's work. Whether it's Batman's movements of the lames in a warehouse fire, this is nice to look at.

P.O.V - Spectrum's Brilliance
rexshard9330 July 2008
Sean Catherine Derek and Laren Bright created the original story for P.O.V. Sean Catherine Derek and Laren Bright wrote the script based on their original story.

Original Story of P.O.V was very strong in structure. But BS&P didn't approve the story. This (below) was published in Animato Magazine around 1993. In Original Story, We cut out flashbacks to Montoya's youth when she was called a liar. And flashbacks to Bullock's youth when he was playing high-school football when his dad yells at him because he was using teamwork: 'Don't be a team player, be a star. Being a team player is for losers. Go out for Number One, Pal." There were many other interesting ideas in the original story. Sadly, BS&P didn't approve it. So Mitch Brian created another story to please BS&P. Its a lot different from Original Story. His story is what we see in the episode. Sean Catherine Derek and Laren Bright ended up writing the teleplay based on Mitch Brian's story.

But there are lots of strong points. Spectrum Animation Studio in Japan did the animation for this episode. I think Spectrum was best overseas animation studio for Batman TAS. If we look at episodes animated by Spectrum, then we will see how beautiful it is. In P.O.V, we see brilliant facial expressions of the characters, great action scenes, and many other things. Spectrum Animation Studio did the animation for episodes "Heart of Ice", "Vendetta", Robin's Reckoning Part 1, Its Never too Late, and On Leather Wings.

Alan Burnett, Eric Radomski, and Bruce Timm should have send more episodes to Spectrum. They only sent 6 episodes to Spectrum. But Spectrum did Layout services for few other episodes. But they didn't do the animation.

Producers of Batman should have done like Producer Davis Doi did with SWAT Kats. Majority of SWAT Kats Episodes were sent to Studio Mook in Japan for Animation. So the animation turned out to be great.

Batman Animated Series had great episodes. But many of the episodes became weak, because of the weak animation by Studios like Akom and Jade. But Producers made a great decision with this episode. Although the story is not great, still Animation by Spectrum makes this episode great.

Warning: Spoilers
P.O.V is a unique episode and does basically what it says on the tin, with 3 quarters of the story being perspective pieces from three different officers, one being Harvey Bullock, another being Renee Montoya who recently had her film debut in Birds of Prey thanks to her debut as a character here, and the other being a forgettable, generic rookie cop. The last quarter is a sort of redemption for Montoya and adds a little more context to the episode. Overall it's a pretty enjoyable and different instalment. A light to decent 8/10 from me.

P.O.V. - A Brilliant Change of Pace

Warning: Spoilers
Story: Really cool premise. I like how the visuals of Bullock's story contradict his lies. Nice change and one-off with Batman taking a back seat. Cool theme song. Satisfying ending. (7/10)

Characters: Bullock is great and his voice is fantastic. The rookie cop's reactions are realistic. Inspector and Commissioner Gordon have an interesting contrast and relationship. Montoya is a very good lead in this episode. The villains are very weak though. (7/10)

Animation: Good image of fire at start. Great animation throughout. (9/10)

Verdict: 8/10
