The producers learned a valuable lesson about Broadcast Standards and Practices (BS&P in Batman's fight with the robot henchman Captain Clown. "We found out that we could beat the crap out of him, because he's a robot," said Bruce Timm. "It was great. We didn't know if we could get away with that, but we took a chance. We had Batman pick up a pipe and bash him in the head, and there was no objection."
Kevin Altieri came up with a new weapon for the Joker, to stave off Batman on a catwalk. "While I was storyboarding that sequence I wondered what would the Joker do? Throw a knife? No. I thought of the old poker trick with the card up the sleeve, and it would be a stainless-steel card. Zwock!"
This episode is the first episode produced with Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as Alfred; he would continue in the role until Alfred's final appearance in Starcrossed (2004).
First appearance of the Batboat.
Bruce Timm stated he wasn't too fond of this episode, negatively comparing it to a Super Friends (1973) episode because Joker has no real motive for his actions. Later episodes would get around this by having Joker's motive often boil down to insanity.
