PUT SHORTY IN A CAGE? WHAT THINK YOU?
A clever move, later in the series, was to have episodes linked together, like an on-going serial, accent on comedy in this case. Here, the marital trials and tribulations of shifty Shorty (played by kooky Shug Fisher) were front row and center. Being an old friend of the family, naturally Granny and Jed are behind the guy, though Jed suggests it might be a good idea to simply put him in Ellie May's monkey's cage??? Mr. Drysdale later comments that there's not much difference whether a woman marries Shorty or a chimp!
One of the the greatest character actors of all time, Elivia Allman, makes another appearance on the series as depressed Elverna, who is sadly looking for a husband -- so why not hook her up with Shorty? Problem here is that Mr. Drysdale's pool of cute secretaries interests Shorty much, MUCH MORE than Elverna. And so it goes.
Another example of terrific comedy writing, and the acting that goes with it. Elivia Allman began her long career in radio in the early 1930s, and became known as a master of dialects. That brought her into tv where she appeared in almost every sitcom. She did have a regular role as Mrs. Dithers in BLONDIE in the late 50s. She also had bit parts in some classic movies, such as a librarian in BREAKFAST AT TIFFANYS. Elivia, to her credit, was also a realtor in Hollywood who found homes for stars, such as Betty White! On another interesting note, comedian Shug Fisher, who also began in radio in the 30s, sang with a group called the BEVERLY HILL BILLIES. What a concidence? Super episode from SEASON 8 EPISODE 21 CBS dvd box set.
