The country is in mourning with the death of King Edward VII. Charlie Haslemere has finally decided to marry. His intended is Margaret Rosslyn, a pretty but shy young woman. He seeks Louisa's assent - he says he could never marry anyone if she didn't approve - and despite her feelings, Louisa supports him. Problems arise when Irene Baker sues Charlie for breach of promise claiming he had proposed marriage the previous summer when they holidayed at Louisa's seaside villa. Charlie's initial reaction is just to pay up and sweep it under the carpet but in the end, he decides to fight it in court. Things aren't looking very good for Charlie, that is until Merriman is called as a witness and he recounts some of Irene Baker's other visits to the Bentinck.
