The rifle that the boys were able to order through the mail was a British Enfield No. 5 Mk. 1 Short Magazine Lee Enfield known as a Jungle Carbine. It was a bolt-action, detachable magazine-fed rifle chambered for the .303 British cartridge. It was a shortened version of the No. 4 Mk. 1 S.M.L.E. that was modified for use in jungle environments. Mail order purchases of firearms was legal in 1966. It was restricted to federally licensed firearms dealers in 1968 with the passage of the gun control act of 1968.
We learn in this episode that Dr. Kimble helped coach Little League back in his home town.
Kurt Russell returns for a second time in the series. In the second season's Nemesis (1964), he played Lieutenant Gerard's son.
Adjusted for inflation, the $18 price for the rifle would equal approximately $165 in the year 2022; the $2.75 Gary pays to join the club would equal almost $25, and the $3 Gary steals would be a little more than $27; what's more, the $1.00 Rick applies to the purchase of bullets would equal approximately $10.
This is the fifth and final appearance Bing Russell makes in the series, each time playing a character involved in law enforcement.
