Mike wants to send away for a camera with the $35 he has saved. Sam wants him to put $15 in his savings account and the rest to someone less fortunate. Sam asks him to talk with Reverend Keith (character actor Robert Cornthwaite) who suggests $10 would cover a year's tuition for a student at a Hong Kong missionary school. In China, Reverend Strook (western character actor Phil Chambers) tells young Kim Lee (Teresa Jaw) that she now has an adoptive father. She writes Mike an appreciative letter ending with "your devoted daughter". She includes her picture and report card. Howard relates to Mike the Chinese customs and values between parents and children.
Howard: "Why all the sudden interest in Hong Kong?"
Mike: "I have a daughter there."
Mike takes his role as adoptive father seriously and the expected wisdom and guidance needed as a parent. They enjoy writing one another, with Mike giving her advice. Mr. Kenworthy (soap opera actor Charles Bateman) and Mrs. Kenworthy (Jean Howell) arrive at the mission school to announce their decision to adopt Kim Lee and bring her to Washington D.C. to live. This disappoints Mike who sees his perceived role dissolve. Sam takes Mike to Washington to meet Kim Lee and her new parents, and a revelation is made.
This is a decent episode thanks to some feel-good moral deeds and mindsets, and some comedic moments. But, everything comes a bit too easy and a stretch in places.
