Hagen and Triplett appear to be completely screwed.
This episode of "Police Story" begins with a stakeout gone bad. The two liquor store bandits not only rob the place, but they kill the clerk! Not surprisingly, Detectives Hagen and Triplett (Don Meredith and Christopher Connelly) take it personally and are determined to catch the two men responsible. The first one is not a problem...they catch him and he quickly confesses. However, the second one...he's a problem. The lead they follow leads to an apartment but he's not there. Instead, some other guy is and he attacks Hagen and tries to take his gun. Not unexpectedly, the two detectives open fire--killing the suspect.
Now although the shooting was the wrong guy, the two detectives followed proper procedures. However, the department doesn't...and they destroy the ability to test for gunshot residue which would have proved Hagen was only inches away when he fired. And, to make things worse, the department then order them to testify...even if it incriminates them. It really looks like there is a quick rush to judgment and the two detectives are scapegoats.
This is the first episode of two parts. And, it is a very good one and manages to make the viewer angry...which is good as the folks that made the show wanted to enrage the viewers. And, with apparently no one on their side, it sure looks bad for the pair. Well made and it makes you want to turn in for part 2!
