John Goodman really shows his acting chops in this one.

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the great individual episodes of season six of Roseanne, which was a transitional season for the series.

In this episode we learn more about Dan's childhood. In fact, Dan learns more about Dan's childhood. Up to now, the audience has been led to believe that Dan's father, played by the wonderful Ned Beatty, was a somewhat selfish guy, a bit of a buffoon, and a man who enjoyed his life of traveling salesman to the point that he didn't care too much about the impact it had on his family. In this episode, Dan's mother goes to a mental hospital, and Dan blames this all on his father, gets drunk, and goes over to his father and Crystal's home slinging accusations, but Dan's father is not home. Roseanne retrieves Dan, and when he sobers up she tells him the truth about his mother, how she had mental problems even before she married Dan's father. Dan breaks down crying, having an impossible time of reconciling a lifetime of opinion with the actual truth - that his Dad took Dan's disdain all of these years so Dan would have no bad feelings toward his mother. Dan goes back to his father's house to patch things up, and fixing a toaster together and watching a football game, you get the feeling that Dan may be seeing his dad through different eyes for the first time and maybe this is the beginning of them mending fences. It was a truly great episode.

Lies My Father Told Me (#6.21)

Warning: Spoilers
The family is dealing with grandma Conner going to a mental institution and of course the hardest it is for Dan. He blames his dad and comes drunk to his house. But Crystal tells Roseanne the truth and that Dan's mother had always a mental illness, Ed just hid it from Dan and let him blame it on him for everything so that he can protect her and don't make Dan think bad of his mother.

This is one of the episodes that is less humorous and more into emotional side. And it was done in a great way. John Goodman is a great actor and in this episode he shows us Dan's pain very well. It also adds more to Ed's character who is now getting a positive side. And yes they did make it see intense with some laughs such as DJ and the test or reliving the situation.

Dan drove drunk in this episode

Warning: Spoilers
Unless he walked or road a bike, he got to Crystal's house in his vehicle while he was intoxicated. I just thought about this... because I'm safe at home, drinking beer watching this episode. He threw his cup of coffee which Crystal's son brought to him, against the wall.. and he was obviously drunk out of his head and he was angry due to the recent situation regarding his Mom's alimony.. but he didn't have to get in his car (or truck) and drive drunk. It wasn't "okay" in the late 80's/early 90's and it's still not "okay"..

It's a great episode however, as are all of the ones featuring Ned Beatty. :)

Cheers and stay out of your vehicle when you're loaded!
