This episode shows Third Watch crew as they deal with life in the aftermath of 9/11. While I didn't live in NYC, my sister did, in Hells Kitchen, and I heard from her stories of how ordinary people treated the Fire/Rescue people and police officers after 9/11. According to her, the depiction of the citizens continually thanking emergency personnel was extremely accurate. My sister, like so many other New Yorkers, wandered around the city, wanting to do something to help. She ended up helping to organize and catalog all the gifts, flowers and miscellaneous items that came into the Broadway firehouse. I visited her and saw for myself the variety of items left at the firehouse.

One of the most striking parts was the two girls who brought the candle to the firehouse. According to them, the candle would allow the firefighters to 'talk' to their missing comrades. Many people who watched this show probably thought that was just drama written for the show, but it was very typical of many of the items left at the stations, from candles, to religious relics, to literally hundreds of handwritten cards and notes.

The episode shows the conflict the officers and fire/rescue people had with being torn between gratitude at all the accolades being given to them and being overwhelmed by them. Once again, the writers and actors portrayed all of this with great respect .
