- Renaldo is upbeat because it's his birthday. In the forest he meets Hollingsworth, the royal executioner, who is on his way to the castle. The Merry Men have a surprise party all ready for their comrade; a similar, though duller party is also taking place in the castle for Bertram. - Renaldo is upbeat and excited because it's his birthday. While returning to Sherwood Forest after some errands, he meets Hollingsworth, the royal executioner, who is on his way to the castle. The Merry Men have a surprise party all ready for their comrade, filled with cake, presents, and song; a similar, though much duller party is taking place at the same time in the castle for Bertram. As soon as he gets the chance, Renaldo sneaks away from his own celebration to bring a present for and bury the hatchet with his hated twin brother. The Sheriff possesses no such sentimentality, however, and promptly has Renaldo arrested and thrown into the dungeon, scheduling the birthday boy's beheading for the stroke of midnight. Maid Marian rides to Sherwood Forest as quickly as she can to fetch Robin Hood and his Merry Men, but they fear they may not be able to make it in time to prevent the scheduled execution. Meanwhile, Bertram and Renaldo reminisce about their mutual childhoods before the latter was stolen away by the gypsies. Finally, Bertram is overcome with familial feelings for his twin and flings open the dungeon door. Renaldo hits his brother over the head to make the ruse look convincing, and escapes just before the midnight deadline. The Merry Men arrive after midnight and prepare to attack the castle and revenge their fallen friend until Renaldo stops them. Disappointed, the Sheriff promises Hollingsworth that, the next time Renaldo is captured, the executioner will be engaged for a double-header.
