The idea for "A Day in the Life" came about because Rob Tapert want to make an episode with little action as possible to give Lucy Lawless (Xena) a chance to recover from her injury and make it like a documentary and the story followed Xena and Gabrielle on a seemingly mundane typical day.
Lucy Lawless and Rob Tapert announced their engagement just before putting the episode "A Day in the Life" together. As an inside joke, when Hower asks Gabrielle "Has Xena ever thought of settling down and getting married?"
Selected by fans to be featured on the "Xena: Warrior Princess: 10th Anniversary Collection", and subsequently considered one of the greatest episodes in "Xena: Warrior Princess" history.
Almost all scenes are shot with a hand held camera, often held by director Michael Hurst. This gives the show a taste of a documentary and enhance the sense of intimacy between the heroines, both Lucy Lawless and Renée O'Connor being very good friends of Hurst and perfectly at ease with him directing and shooting.
