Pretty good action. Interesting about Xena's dad, but overall found the episode a little lackluster.

Warning: Spoilers
Xena meets up with her apparently long-lost father. They are both trying to stop the same warlord, Kirilus. Kirilus is being "mentored" by Ares, who has a hidden agenda.

I thought the actor playing Atrius was pretty good in his role. He looks like he possibly could be Xena's father, with his height, and looks like he had dark hair.

I thought the deception Ares was playing was too obvious. Not necessarily that it was Ares behind everything, but that something was "off" with Atrius. For example, Xena tells Gabrielle the story about how her father would come riding in and scoop her as a child up in his arms. Then later Atrius just happens to recount the exact same story she told like 5 minutes ago. Not some other remembrance? Another example is when Xena is humming a song whilst sitting on a hill. Later Atrius just happens to be humming the same exact song. Xena explains how her father left her family when she was little. Later Atrius just happens to comments about leaving the family. See, kinda obvious something is off.

I'm not sure if this is the only episode that has this, but this it's definitely one of the rare ones that show the chakram returning to Xena from midair. She throws the chakram, it cuts some arrows, then goes up at an angle, and then it stops in midair swirling, then it heads back to her, and she flips and catches it in the hook on her outfit. Actually, it was a pretty cool scene.

I think they missed an opportunity when Gabrielle bashed Xena over her back with the pitchfork. Xena seemed to "wake up" and realized what she was doing was wrong, and she was about to say something, maybe that Gabrielle was her conscience, and that she was sorry, but then Atirus groaned and the moment was cut off. Then Atrius went full-on for her to get revenge for him, and that's when Xena really realized she was wrong. Anyway, I felt like she should have been allowed to say what she was going to say in that scene.

I thought the Gabrielle/Rhea side story was boring. Sorry, not sorry.

Wonder what happened to Kirilus? Can't imagine he'd worship Ares anymore.

We get to hear a little about what happened to Xena's father. Xena doesn't have a high opinion of him at all: "I don't know who you are, but my father wouldn't rescue slave girls. All he cared about was himself." Later in the series, we find out Xena's father was a soldier and worshipper of Ares. Also later when Xena claims Ares is her father in order to trick the Furries, in season three's 'The Furies,' some viewers actually believe he is her father, citing this episode as further proof. For me personally, I never believed it. Mainly I like the idea of Xena being a unique special mortal on her own, and not because some Man-God is her daddy. Also, it's kinda gross, because Xena and Ares have this dark flirt thing, and Ares is in love with her. I mean yeah, incest happened all the time in Greek mythology, but it was never really a thing in this show or Hercules TLJ.

Xena does get to say something important to Gabs at the end: "Gabrielle, I want you to understand something. We both have families we were born into. But sometimes families change, and we have to build our own. For me, our friendship binds us closer than blood ever could." Thus the title, "Ties that bind." It was never about Xena's tie to her father, but rather her tie to Gabrielle who got through to her when she whacked Xena over her back. When you think about it, Gabs took a stand against Xena in order to save Xena. Ares never counted on that. Good going Gabs.

Pretty good action. Interesting about Xena's dad, but overall found the episode a little lackluster. Love that Xena would rather die than go back to Ares, and how mad that made him. Not enough to kill her tho. 7/10.

Salute to Xena - A 25th Anniversary Review
skullface202030 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Xena and Gabrielle's normal routine of saving innocent people is interrupted by an old warrior who joins their cause. He's not just anyone, he claims to be Xena's father.

SYNOPSIS

An up-and-coming warlord named Kirilus is using his band of thugs to kidnap a group of young women to press into slavery. He feels good about himself, and is suddenly visited by his idol Ares, the god of war. Ares says that Kirilus' work is decent, but it won't last. Xena will one day replace him. Kirilus can't get himself to believe this prophecy. Meanwhile Xena and Gabrielle are watching Kirilus' men who have the young women hostage. As they consider how they can save them, they notice some old guy enter the camp with swords swinging. He's here to save the girls, but he's actually having a hard time getting past the guards. Xena jumps into action and saves him. He's grateful, and they free the women hostages. This old timer is named Atrius, and he claims to be Xena's long lost father.

Xena doesn't buy it; she says that the father she knew would never help innocent people. He insists that he is, but Xena says she and Gabrielle will now leave him and take the freed young women back to their home town. While on the road they suddenly see old Atrius ride into their midst on a horse he didn't previously have. He's being chased by two men. Xena protects Atrius from the men, and finds out that Atrius maybe didn't steal the horse after all, but was instead owed it by their master. Is this Atrius guy actually a trustworthy and decent man? It's hard to tell. Meanwhile, Kirilus sends an assassin to catch up with Xena and kill her. The guy fails and is sent running off by Xena. However, before he can leave he's intercepted by Atrius who is upset that he made an attempt on Xena's life. Atrius kills him, and Gabrielle is unsettled because she saw the man surrender. However, there was a tiny blade under his body, and Atrius says he was acting in self defense.

As the group moves forward with the freed young women, Atrius speaks with Gabrielle. He says that he sees that she and Xena are a team, and that once they return the young women to their village he'll go his own way. He doesn't want to get in between Xena and Gabrielle. Gabrielle doesn't like this, and she wants Xena to have some time with her father. Gabrielle tells Xena that she'll take the young women home, and Xena and Atrius can stay behind and make sure they're not pursued by Kirilus or his men. Gabrielle is sad to say goodbye to Xena for an unknown amount of time, but she feels it's necessary.

Xena and Atrius make a good team as they knock out some of Kirilus' cavalry men who are traveling through the woods. Due to her super powerful pressure point moves, Xena finds out from one of the soldiers that Kirilus plans to attack the village that belongs to the women he formerly had captured. Xena tells Atrius that she'll save the village, but he should stay behind. He refuses, and says that he wants to help the village since he had once harmed those townspeople back in his less virtuous days. They ride into town and rejoin Gabrielle, but the townsfolk immediately detain Atrius for his past crimes. Xena gets them to agree to release him once she saves them all from Kirilus. She's now off to face the warlord's army on her own.

Dealing with Kirilus is actually pretty easy. Xena rides into his camp, challenges him to a duel, and beats him soundly. Now his men are loyal to Xena, and they faithfully follow her back to the village. However, upon returning Xena sees Atrius tied up outside and left for dead. Apparently he tried to escape custody, and the villagers beat him nearly to death. Xena is enraged that they did this to her father, and she orders her new army to kill everyone! Gabrielle can't believe this, and she stands up to Xena. Suddenly Atrius seems to recover quite well, and he's all trying to convince Xena to ignore Gabrielle's pleas for peace. Xena all of a sudden realizes that Atrius was simply Ares in disguise this entire time! Ares slaps Xena around briefly, and he insists she become the vicious warlord that she once was. Xena says no, and she's willing to die instead of becoming evil again. Having failed to convert Xena to the dark side, Ares leaves, but hints that he'll be back one day. Gabrielle is proud of Xena, and they leave the village as best friends once again.

NOTES

Xena momentarily lost her way when she was faced with reuniting with her "father", but fortunately Ares' plan for her failed. Xena and Gabrielle have a friendship that is just as strong as family, and they're always available to support each other when times are tough.

Enter: Atrius, Kirilus

Ties That Bind
Prismark1020 June 2019
Ties That Bind sees the return of Ares who wants to lure Xena back to the path of evil.

It also sees Xena encounter a man called Atrius who claims to be her father.

Xena and Gabrielle encounter Atrius as they try to free some women from a warlord who has taken them into slavery. Xena is suspicious at first, Gabrielle as good reasons for suspicion when he sees Atrius kill a man after he has surrendered.

The episode is all about what tricks Ares is playing. Veteran actor Tom Atkins gives a good performance as a man who just wants to be acknowledged by his daughter but he might also be holding his cards close to his chest.
