A criminal mastermind seeks to take a kingdom hostage with the aid of an imposter princess. Xena and Gabrielle must make sense of three lookalikes in order to save the day.
SYNOPSIS
King Lias (season 1 episode 15) is ill and believes that his days are numbered. Fortunately he has a wonderful daughter Diana (Xena doppelgänger), son-in-law Philemon, and a new grandchild. Lias decides to call Xena over to consult with his family in anticipation of his death; this is a very wise move. Shortly thereafter Gabrielle overhears Joxer bragging at the tavern that Xena has the hots for him. Something is certainly not right here, and she tells him to cut if off. Anyway, Gabrielle had expected to catch up with Xena at Lias' castle a day later, but she goes to meet her friend who apparently arrived early. However, the situation is much worse that merely Lias' impeding death. A punk warlord named Agis has found his own Princess Diana lookalike in the form of a local tramp named Meg. This explains Joxer's misguided believe that Xena is romantically interested in him; it was Meg whom he met at the tavern.
Agis is seeking to benefit from the death of King Lias. He plans to kill Diana and Philemon, install Meg as a puppet queen, and himself become the power behind the throne. As Gabrielle enters the castle she approaches Meg, whom she believes to be Xena. Unfortunately, Meg has been granted many powers since Xena is a close friend of the king, and Meg has Gabrielle thrown into prison. Joxer strolls into the castle and runs into Princess Diana, whom he believes to be Xena. He makes an unwanted physical advance on the princess and is immediately thrown into the can alongside Gabrielle. They're both quite confused to say the least. Agis certainly doesn't want Xena to interrupt his agenda, and he plans of having some thugs stop her as she travels toward the castle. His losers fail quickly, and Xena is on the scene. Agis is crafty and won't go down without another scheme or two. He seizes Princess Diana and sends her into hiding with his minions. Meg appears to have detained Gabrielle and is also taking her to Agis' camp, but things aren't what they seem. It's really Xena, and she frees Diana and Gabrielle!
The real Meg is still at the castle, and she's getting a bit on Agis' nerves. Furthermore, she really does have a huge crush on Joxer, and so he's thrilled but also interested in doing the right thing. Agis plans to have Meg kill King Lias, but Xena and crew jump into action. It's actually Meg who takes the elderly king to safety during the chaos. Meanwhile, Xena succeeds is saving Diana's infant son during the battle where they defeat Agis and his gang (this is in the same spot in the castle where Xena previously battled the goons employed by the Libyan slavers back in season 1 episode 15). The kingdom is saved, and Meg actually protected and cared for King Lias during his hour of need. It turns out she's had a difficult life and was working under of violence from Agis. She's not a bad person, and the recovering King Lias hires her to work in his castle. He will live for many more years to come.
NOTES
Joxer can't get over the fact that Meg finds him to be quite the catch, and at different times it lands him in serious trouble with both Princess Diana and Xena (Xena was so taken aback by his actions that she asked him if he was suicidal). Xena and Gabrielle are the closest of confidants to the good King Lias and his family.
Enter: Meg, Agis
