While these are more space fantasy than true sci-fi, the genre's core purpose is to offer commentary on our present and possible future. Films like Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, and Ridley Scott's The Martian are exemplary in their scientific fidelity. However, one film stands out for its unparalleled accuracy: Ron Howard's Apollo 13.
The Story of the Failed, Yet Heroic Flight to the Moon
"Apollo 13" is not your typical sci-fi movie but rather a science space drama with fictional elements, dramatizing the perilous events of the April 1970 space mission. Directed by Ron Howard, known for films like Willow, A Beautiful Mind, and The Da Vinci Code, and written by William Broyles Jr. and Al Reinert, the movie meticulously recreates the dangerous mission.

Hollywood’s recent predilection for depicting the invention of particular products has, so far, relied on demonstrating the gravitas of said product’s eventual existence: Nike’s Air Jordans in Air; the dawn of the smartphone in BlackBerry; Tetris in, well, Tetris. Unfrosted, Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts movie takes the opposite approach. It is, by design, extremely silly — an exaggerated parody of those tropes that ascribes history-altering importance to the creation of a fruit-goo-filled rectangle. For kids, Unfrosted argues, the arrival of the Pop-Tart was the most seismic cultural event of the ’60s; Seinfeld himself was one of those kids.

More than two decades later, it’s hard to imagine anyone but Devon Sawa playing the titular role in the unforgettable music video for Eminem’s 2000 classic, “Stan,” but the actor has revealed Macaulay Culkin was the first choice to star in the visual.
“They went out to Macaulay Culkin first,” Sawa told Entertainment Tonight in a recent interview. “I think that they wanted him, and he wasn’t available, or didn’t want to do it or whatever.”
Thankfully for Sawa, Dr. Dre (who directed the video) was a fan of his work in Final Destination and suggested him instead. “There happened to be somebody in the casting office that knew somebody who was friends with me, and they called me that way… and it ended up working out pretty good,” Sawa explained, adding that the video was “one of the proudest things I’ve been a part of.

The Slim Shady rapper’s original name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III. Marshall and John’s friendship began in 2001 when they performed at the 2001 Grammys. [Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Apples Never Fall finale.] Apples Never Fall spent seven episodes unraveling the mystery of Joy Delaney’s (Annette Bening) disappearance, and as it turns out, no one’s theories about whodunnit were right. In fact, the explanation was overwhelmingly simple. Each episode of the Peacock melodrama focused on a different member of the Delaney family. It featured flashbacks from “then” and “now” to show how the family’s rift happened, how it led to Joy going missing, and the aftermath. While her absence caused shockwaves and was splashed across the news, the truth was ultimately pretty anticlimactic. Joy wasn’t dead; she just left. Finding out why she left answered every lingering question the series posed. By the time we got to Sam Neill‘s Stan-focused Episode 6, everyone in the family and the court of public opinion (including the West Palm Beach police) believed he was responsible for her disappearance.

Last month, in the heat of the Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion beef, TMZ reported that the cemetery where Megan’s mother Holly Thomas is buried had to bolster security after the location was doxxed on social media by one of Nicki’s fans, collectively known as “Barbz.” Nicki had nothing to do with the threat, but the brazenness was nonetheless regarded as a low point for stan culture and led many to ponder if that depth of celebrity stan-dom was a mental illness in itself.

You’d be forgiven for being surprised that Jason Derulo hadn’t released an album since 2015’s Everything Is 4. In the nine years since that full-length’s release, Derulo has kept himself in the public eye, whether through his Tiktoks or his steady stream of singles; his fizzy collaboration with the New Zealand producer Jawsh 685 “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat” even reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 2020, thanks in part to a clutch assist from BTS.

Eminem is producing Stans, from director Steven Leckart, about just how intense fans can get: more here.
It took me a little while to work out that the idea of ‘standom’ – a particularly fanatical kind of fandom – emanated from the Eminem song ‘Stan’ from the year 2000. I wouldn’t mind, I bought the sodding single as well.
Anyway. Eminem is returning to the world of Stans with a documentary feature film that his company is backing. Cunningly, said documentary will be going by the name of Stans, and Eminem is listed amongst the co-producers of the project.
He’s not the director though, so let’s have a paragraph or two on him. Steven Leckart is the person in question, and he’s previously directed Challenger: The Final Flight. He also co-wrote the TV series Legacy: The True Story Of The LA Lakers, which hasn’t made it to these shores.

Eminem is fittingly set to co-produce, and be the partial focus of, a new documentary about obsessive superfans, tentatively (and obviously) titled Stans.
As Variety reports, the new project was directed by Steven Leckart, and uses Eminem and “the fans that worship him” as a launching point for what’s described as a “revealing, edgy, and disarmingly personal journey into the world of superfandom.” Stans is apparently just the working title — named, of course, for Eminem and Dido’s 2000 hit “Stan” about an obsessive, delusional fan — but it’s hard...

After inadvertently coining the term “stan” on his 2000 song of the same name, Eminem is now set to co-produce Stans, a documentary about overzealous superfans.

Paramount+ has dropped the logline and trailer for its latest “South Park” special. “South Park: Joining the Panderverse” will debut in the U.S. on Oct. 27 exclusively on Paramount+.
The special will then be available in Canada a day later. Dates for the U.K., Australia and other international territories will be released at a later time.

The first clip for the special shows Cartman, Stan, Butters and Kenny as audiences have never seen them before: as adult women who in Cartman and Butter’s cases are of color. The only character who remains the same is Kyle.

Ask any person on the street if they are at least somewhat familiar with comic book legend Stan Lee, and almost always the answer will be a resounding yes.
Lee has become such an icon in not just the world of superheroes, but in just popular culture as a whole. The man has helped create some of the most iconic characters in all of fiction, so naturally, considering the legacy that Lee has left on the world since his passing, it only makes sense for a documentary to be made about his life. However, while I’m sure that a great, honest and detailed documentary about Lee will exist at some point in my lifetime, this is certainly not that.
Regardless of my personal feelings about how this film approached its subject matter, it should be said that this is not a poorly-made documentary. The film is directed by David Gelb,...

Legend has it… nothing rhymes with the word “orange” and while sitting across from Anderson Cooper, rapper Eminem proceeded that to debunk this lyrical myth. When it comes to word play and rhymes, the man can do the impossible. Hitting it big as an anti-pop star, going after all the top charting artists but this Mc soon became so successful that he accidentally became a top charting pop star himself. But of course, this legendary musician tried to fight off the demons of fame and fortune when they manifested in the form of substance abuse and depression. He would over come them, then relapse and recover again… but where he is at in his monster career now? Is he still rapping it up in da streets? Still topping the charts? Still spitting super fly fresh lyrics from his angry little mouth, which now has a weird beard?

Ed Sheeran told his audience he was going to perform a cover of an Eminem song
Sheeran posted a video to his Instagram account of the moment he surprised his audience with Eminem. In a break between songs, he tells his fans that he’s going to perform an Eminem cover next. Eminem surprised his hometown crowd by dropping in for Ed Sheeran‘s concert in Detroit Saturday.
The “Slim Shady” rapper showed up to Detroit’s Ford Field — where Sheeran was making the latest stop in his “Mathematics Tour” — for an impromptu performance of “Lose Yourself.”
Sheeran kicked things off by performing the first 30 seconds of the hit track before being joined on stage by the rapper himself for the major surprise.
The duo then wowed the crowd with their own rendition of “Stan”, with Sheeran providing the Dido singing while Eminem delivered his rapped verses as he paced the stage.
“I appreciate you, Detroit,” Eminem said as he and Sheeran were met by a roar of applause after their two-song surprise. “I love you!”

Ed Sheeran added Eminem to the equation for the Detroit stop on his ongoing “Mathematics Tour,” with the pair performing “Lose Yourself” and “Stan” in front of the rapper’s hometown crowd.
“I wondered if I could play you a cover of an Eminem song tonight,” Sheeran began. “I think you know it. We rehearsed it today; we’ll see how it goes.” After strumming the “Lose Yourself” intro and admirably rattling off the first few lines, Slim Shady took the stage to finish off the opening verse. Though the rapper sounded just as ferocious as he did on the original 8 Mile cut, the singer-guitarist brought his own twist with some nice harmonies during the chorus.
Cutting the song short, Sheeran raised the hype by telling the audience, “Can I just say, he was gonna come out and do one song, but I said you can’t come out...

Performing at the Motor City’s Ford Field, Sheeran acknowledged Eminem’s hometown by first launching into the 8 Mile hit “Lose Yourself” solo, telling the crowd he rehearsed it earlier in the day. “We’ll see how it goes,” he said.

On Tuesday, Danny Brocklehurst’s “Ten Pound Poms” won the Golden Nymph award for best series at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival. Lead actors Faye Marsay and Warren Brown sat down with Variety during the festival to discuss the show.
The co-production between the U.K.’s BBC and the Australian streaming service Stan follows a group of Brits as they leave dreary post-war Britain in 1956 to embark on a life-altering adventure on the other side of the world. For only 10 British pounds, they have been promised a better house, better job prospects, and a better quality of life by the sea in sun-soaked Australia. But life down under isn’t exactly the idyllic dream the new arrivals have been promised.
Actor Faye Marsay, who was in “McMafia” and is in “Star Wars” spin-off “Andor,” said that this episode in recent British history has rarely been explored there. “It’s actually...

WGA members attended the glitzy event but ceded the spotlight to cast and non-guild colleagues.
The 62nd Monte-Carlo Television Festival wrapped in Monaco on Tuesday night (June 20) having found creative ways to manoeuvre around the limits placed on visiting US talent by the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike.
The festival managed to wrangle international stars and US studio execs to the event and sidestepped any controversy relating to project promotion. WGA members are prohibited from making promotional appearances during the strike but can hold press conferences in their capacity as directors or producers.

Stan, the Australian streaming service owned by Nine Entertainment, has renewed its content supply partnership with Lionsgate. The multi-year output agreement secures a slate of first-run premium scripted dramas from Starz and Lionsgate and a new slate of theatrical films exclusive to Australian audiences.
The agreement follows Stan’s renewal last year of a deal with Sony Pictures Television.
Headlining the new shows expected to flow from the Lionsgate deal is espionage drama “Gray,” starring Patricia Clarkson (“Six Feet Under”), Nathalie Emmanuel (“Game of Thrones”) and Rupert Everett (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”) which is based on an original concept by bestselling novelist David Baldacci.
Other premium dramas coming soon to Stan from Lionsgate and Starz will include: a sequel series based on the groundbreaking hit “Spartacus,” currently in development from creator Steven S. The new Disney+ documentary, “Stan Lee,” was brought to task Saturday by Neal Kirby, son of revered comics creator Jack Kirby, who slammed the bio-doc as the latest in Lee’s “over 35 years of uncontested publicity.”
Raising questions about creator credit for much of his father’s work at Marvel — credit that for years has fallen to Lee, particularly in the public eye — Kirby shared a series of messages via his daughter Jillian’s Twitter account to express his continued frustration with Lee’s ubiquity as the mind behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“If you were to look at a list and timeline of Marvel’s characters from 1960 through 1966, the period in which the vast majority of Marvel’s major characters were created during Lee’s tenure, you will see Lee’s name as a cocreator on every character,...

Running the Monte-Carlo Television Festival since 2012, Laurent Puons has always tried to look ahead. From his embrace of streamers and digital platforms back in 2017 to his growing emphasis on diverse formats, the festival director sees his summer showcase as a bellwether event for the wider television industry – and what the industry could use right now, in Puons’ view, is flexibility.
“There are already so many festivals today dedicated to series,” Puons explains. “But Monte-Carlo follows a wholly different concept. We’re a home for all kinds of content, and one of the only festivals with both fiction and factual competitions. And when you see what’s broadcast on platforms like Netflix and Amazon, [you need to cover that full range.]”
This year’s edition runs June 16 – 20 and is set to welcome 10,000 attendees and host 1,500 interviews, altogether reflecting Monte-Carlo’s wider aim to offer global partners a full service festival stopover.

Face front, true believers! Here’s an interesting lil’ tidbit about the current cinema landscape. Just who has been the major part of several huge box office hits over the last fifteen years? Well, we’re not talking about an actor, or a filmmaker, or a studio exec. Oh, and he left the planet almost five years ago. Okay, you got it, I’m talking about the comic book writing superstar who co-created almost the entire staple of Marvel superheroes. And he became a fun bit of business in the screen adaptations of those characters by popping up in brief cameo roles (I made it a game with my nephews to nudge me when he flashed that big grin). He’s been profiled by several TV newsmagazine shows and mini-bios, but now he’s getting the full feature-length documentary treatment with the simply titled Stan Lee. Excelsior!
