Last month, it was announced that writer/producer Judalina Neira is developing a TV series reimagining of the classic sitcom Bewitched for Sony Pictures Television, aiming to turn it into an “irreverent hourlong” show. NBC clearly likes the idea of reviving Bewitched, because now Deadline has broken the news that the network has their own “Bewitched-inspired” show called Something Wicked in the works, and this one already has a star attached: June Diane Raphael, who may be best known for playing the character Brianna Hanson for the 94 episodes that make up the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, which ran for seven seasons.
Raphael is also writing and executive producing Something Wicked with Dickinson creator Alena Smith. A multi-camera comedy, the show is described as having a Bewitched-type premise and will also serve as an homage to TV sitcom classics. It examines the condition of modern adult womanhood and how even with witchcraft,...

It’s an interesting month on HBO and Max this March, as two acclaimed films hit the streamer along with some intriguing original programming.
First up in the movies arena is the streaming debut of Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet. From beloved Paddington director Paul King, the film follows the adventures of a young Willy Wonka as he looks to become the world’s best (and weirdest) chocolatier. Later in March on Max, there’s also Dream Scenario, a highly-regarded comedy boasting Nicolas Cage as Paul Matthews, who suddenly starts appearing in people’s dreams for unknown reasons, and who naturally becomes very famous as a result of this strange phenomena.
Series-wise, the biggest show on Max this month is The Regime. It packs a solid cast, including Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant, and tells the story of “life within the walls of a modern...

With a premiere-heavy March ahead at HBO, there will be plenty to stream this month on Max!
The first Sunday of March brings the premiere of HBO’s new six-episode limited series “The Regime,” starring HBO alum Kate Winslet. Throughout the rest of the month, don’t rest on the streamer’s long list of library additions, like the recent musical origin story “Wonka” or A24’s sleeper hit (so to speak) “Dream Scenario”; and be sure some of the HBO’s biggest premieres, including “The Girls on the Bus” starring Melissa Benoist and Ramy Youssef’s “More Feelings” make it onto your calendar.
Plus, there’s no March without March Madness! For the first time, Max will stream all of the 2024 [NCAA] Division Men’s Basketball Championship live games and studio coverage airing on TBS, TNT, and truTV, including the NCAA Men’s Final Four National Semifinals and Men’s National Championship.

There’s something uniquely cinematic about romantic comedies — something that makes them a natural fit for the movies and vice-versa. There’s an intoxicating alchemy that allows us to believe in the magic of meet-cutes, happily-ever-afters, and all the agonizing contrivances that tend to pop up between the two. Love it seems gives storytellers permission to transpose the stuff of operas and fables into the fabric of real (or at least overly glossed but still recognizable) life.
On paper, a film like “Pretty Woman” might be a retrograde fairy tale about a sex worker with a heart of gold and the rich businessman who can afford it, but the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Richard Gere is so explosive that you surrender to the sentiment of it all. Literally nothing in Richard Curtis’ “Love Actually” makes sense if you stop and think about it for even a few seconds. The...

Pauly Shore’s performance as Richard Simmons is seeing the light of day, less than a week after plans for a feature film biopic were announced. A 10-minute short film starring Shore, titled “The Court Jester,” premiered at the Cabin in Park City on Friday. The event wasn’t an official Sundance Film Festival screening, but was certainly positioned to draw in festivalgoers.
“The Court Jester” is now available to watch online through the Lewis Brothers’ YouTube channel. A second screening at the Cabin is set for Jan. 22. The director, Jake Lewis, went viral with his Robin Williams impersonation. It stars Jesse Heiman, best known as a conspicuous extra who has appeared in films like “Spider-Man,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “The Social Network.” Heiman plays a segment producer who partners with Simmons amid backstage drama at a talk show.
“I’m really excited about sharing Richard Simmons’s life with the world.

Where have all the comedies gone? Think about that and sing it to yourself to the tune of Paula Cole's "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" We used to be a proper country, inundated with the works of filmmakers like Judd Apatow, Adam McKay, and Paul Feig, starring big name talent like Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Melissa McCarthy, and Jason Segel, just to name a few of the actors who led big studio comedies that were hitting the big screen left and right. Sadly, times have changed, and it's hard to find a successor to "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," the next "Superbad" or "Bridesmaids," or even another "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."
This year alone, you'd be hard-pressed to find movies that are just straight up comedies. Sure, "Barbie" is incredibly funny, but it's not your average straight-up comedy. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves...

This post contains spoilers for "Goosebumps" episodes 9 and 10.
Readers beware, you're in for a scare ... just kidding. It's an interview. But! It is related to the new Hulu and Disney+ adaptation of "Goosebumps," based on the beloved young-adult horror series of the same name from R.L. Stine. In just 10 episodes, the new "Goosebumps" series is a triumph of horror, comedy, and some well-placed nostalgia -- a series that speaks to both the generation that grew up begging parents to buy them the books from the Scholastic Book Fair and raced home to watch new episodes of the TV show after school (It's me. Hi!), as well as new viewers getting into the "Goosebumps" universe for the first time. When I reviewed the new show, I had only been given the first eight episodes, which felt like its own contained season. But with two more episodes unseen, it was a sign...

Today, Disney+ and Hulu unleashed a new take on R.L. Stine's beloved "Goosebumps" book series with a TV series adaptation developed by Rob Letterman (director of the 2015 "Goosebumps" movie) and Nicholas Stoller. Trust me when I say you'll want to give this series a chance, because it takes the scares to a more mature level than we've seen in previous "Goosebumps" adaptations and injects it with a refreshing and genuine teenage perspective, both in comedy and horror.
For those who maybe haven't been keeping up, the new "Goosebumps" series follows a group of five high schoolers as they embark on a shadowy and twisted journey to investigate the tragic passing three decades earlier of a teen named Harold Biddle — while also unearthing dark secrets from their parents' past.

Russell Brand faces an investigation from a second British law enforcement body as the Thames Valley Police say a woman has contacted them with new information about stalking and harassment allegations she first brought in 2018, according to a Monday report from the BBC.
Last month, four women alleged that the actor and comedian sexually assaulted them between 2006 and 2013, according to an investigation by Britain’s Channel 4, The Times and The Sunday Times. Those allegations are being investigated by London Metro Police.
The fifth woman reported her allegations to Thames Valley Police between 2018 and 2022, alleging “sexual offenses” in 2017, but no action was taken at the time, the BBC reported. The department confirmed it was investigating Brand, but declined to provide additional details.
Brand has denied any wrongdoing and says the encounters with each of his accusers were consensual. Messages sent seeking comment were not immediately returned Monday.

There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!
Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).
Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

Paramount+ has removed a stand-up comedy special starring Russell Brand in the wake of sexual assault allegations against the comic.
The 2009 special Russell Brand in New York City was taken off the streamer Tuesday. The removal follows the BBC’s decision to take TV and radio programming featuring Brand off its streaming platforms, with the broadcaster saying it “now falls below public expectations.”
YouTube has also suspended monetization on Brand’s channel (though not the channel itself), saying in a statement, “If a creator’s off-platform behavior harms our users, employees or ecosystem, we take action.” The company said Brand had violated YouTube’s “Creator Responsibility policy.”
Four women have accused Brand of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse between 2006 and 2013, a period that coincided with his growing fame on both sides of the Atlantic. The allegations came via an investigation by The Times of London, The Sunday Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches.

Russell Brand is facing rape and assault allegations that emerged over the weekend and are now putting a hold on his upcoming projects.
Brand’s sold-out comedy tour “Bipolarisation” was postponed at the U.K.’s Theatre Royal Windsor, plus in Plymouth and Wolverhampton over the next 10 days. Brand has additionally been dropped by his management company, and his book deal has been suspended.
A years-long joint investigation by The Times of London, The Sunday Times, and Channel 4 culminated in the recently aired documentary “Dispatches” during which four women accuse Brand of sexual assault and one case of rape. Brand allegedly also entered controlling consensual relationships, including with a 16-year-old girl whom he allegedly made read passages of “Lolita” to him. To note, 16 is the age of consent in the U.K.; Brand was 31 at the time of the allegation.

Multiple women allege that actor and comedian Russell Brand, 48, sexually assaulted them between 2006 and 2013, according to an investigation by Britain’s Channel 4 and newspapers The Times and The Sunday Times.
It was during this period that Brand’s international popularity exploded with his role in 2008’s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and 2010’s “Get Him to the Greek.” The latter portion of these years is when he was married to singer Katy Perry, from 2010 until their 2012 divorce.
Brand attempted to get ahead of the publication of the story on Friday by releasing a video denying some of the allegations, but admitting to having what he described as a period of promiscuity in his past. He’s regularly talked about having a sex addiction. Brand said that his relationships have all been consensual.
The allegations also include that Brand exhibited “controlling, abusive and predatory behavior,” according to the Times. The women do not know each other.

Russell Brand has published a video across his social media channels in which he preemptively denies a “litany” of allegations about unspecified criminal behavior at the height of his celebrity.
The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star said two UK “mainstream media” publications had sent him notice of their intention to publish stories about his alleged misconduct.
Deadline understands that Channel 4 and Rupert Murdoch-owned newspapers The Times and The Sunday Times are behind the stories.
Brand claimed that the right of reply letters contain “astonishing, rather baroque attacks” on his character, as well as “very serious” criminal allegations about his well-known sex addiction.
“The relationships that I had were absolutely always consensual,” Brand said. “I was always transparent about that then, almost too transparent. And I’m being transparent about it now.”

Everyone knows that Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet died in December 2006 at the age of 91, more than 30 years after he seized power from Salvador Allende in a coup d’état that was followed by censorship, torture, mass internments, and forced disappearances at the pleasure of an unelected regime that drained the country of its lifeblood for generations to come. What Pablo Larraín’s cheeky and grotesque “El Conde” (or “The Count”) presupposes is… what if he didn’t?
Directly addressing a figure whose dark shadow has fringed some of the director’s previous work, this fanged satire about the persistence of evil imagines that Pinochet is still alive and kicking. Or, more accurately: undead and loathing it. In Larraín’s conception, Pinochet is a 250-year-old vampire who first developed his lust for blood during the French Revolution, during which he so fetishized Marie Antoinette’s indifference towards the common man that...

Tossed into the stream during the second summer of Covid, Vacation Friends was a throwback to the kind of big, bright studio comedy that doesn’t get made as much any more. It wasn’t anywhere near as entertaining as it should or could have been (think more Couples Retreat than Forgetting Sarah Marshall) but it was a hit for Hulu, scoring a record-breaking opening weekend, and showing that while audiences still might be reticent to rush out to one of these movies on the big screen (the summer has proved to be another rough one for theatrically released comedies), a low-stakes home-watch is an easier yes.

From a widowed therapist getting patients off the couch in “Shrinking” to a chef going all-in on his work after a family death in “The Bear,” to unlikely friendships helping people heal in “Dead to Me” and “Only Murders in the Building,” grief and loss loom over most of this season’s Emmy comedy contenders.
Grieving’s painful process takes center stage in Apple TV+ series “Shrinking.” Jason Segel, known for comedic roles in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “How I Met Your Mother,” takes on a darker, yet still humorous role as Jimmy Laird, a psychiatrist mourning the death of his wife. In an unconventional move for himself and his patients, as well as an attempt to move forward, Jimmy breaks through the monotony of his work by experiencing life with those seeking his help.

To quote Alice Cooper (and poorly paraphrase “High School Musical 2”), school’s out for summer. With Boppenheimer hitting air-conditioned theaters midway through July — just as countless actors and screenwriters head into the heat to join picket-lines in New York and Los Angeles — summer 2023 will no doubt prove a memorable one for Hollywood. What better time then to consider how the movies themselves represent the reason for the season?
The best summer vacation movies range in subject matter and can appeal to all sorts of different audiences. Kid-centric flicks, like “The Parent Trap,” and adult slashers, like the “Friday the 13th” films, explore the traditions and perils of sleep-away camp from spectacularly different view points. Meanwhile, road trip flicks, like the Audrey Hepburn-starring “Two for the Road” and Hindi film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” consider the ins-and-outs of traveling across the country with a similar romanticism but using tones separated by decades and cultures.

If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries or early millennium classic cartoons then boy does Hulu’s list of new releases have some great news for you!
Hulu continues its implicit understanding that streaming services are basically true crime distribution machines this month with a trio of intriguing titles. While it’s not necessarily true crime per se, The Ashley Madison Affair about the notorious dating platform premieres on July 7. That will be followed by Betrayal: The Perfect Husband on July 11, which is based on a compelling podcast of the same name. The Jewel Thief arrives on July 13 to provide an account of Gerald Blanchard, one of history’s most creative criminals.
But where does the cartoon excitement comes in? Well, that’s because season 11 of Matt Groening’s beloved Futurama premieres on July 24. Fry, Leela, the Professor, and Bender will all return for a direct continuation of...

Judd Apatow didn’t want his freaks to disappear from Hollywood.
The multi-hyphenate writer/director/producer behind short-lived cult classic NBC series “Freaks and Geeks” was determined not to let the rising stars of the series fall to the wayside after the show’s untimely cancellation, according to actor Jason Segel.
“Freaks and Geeks” revolved around siblings Lindsay (Linda Cardellini) and Sam (John Francis Daley), who try to make friends in their new Detroit high school in 1980. Segel, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Busy Philipps, Martin Starr, and Samm Levine rounded out the ensemble cast for the teen series that ran from 1999 to 2000. Last week’s new release “No Hard Feelings” has already stirred up some tough emotions for its audience — and not about the so-called “raunchy” and “offensive” comedy at the center of the Jennifer Lawrence-led feature. Instead — and predictably enough — the media narrative has centered on what is missing from the movie…namely, all of Lawrence’s clothes in a scene that sees skinny-dipping turned into a brawl.
Why, in 2023, do audiences still care so much? Both Lawrence’s agency as an actress and producer, as well as her choice to be naked, are undermined by questioning the merits of going full frontal, and sadly, that’s what much of the criticism surrounding “No Hard Feelings” is focused on.
In the film, Lawrence portrays down-on-her-luck Uber driver/bartender Maddie, who struggles to live in the wealthy beach town of Montauk after rapid gentrification. Maddie answers a Craigslist ad from a...

“Do you like your job?”
That’s how my interview with Jason Segel begins — him beating me to the punch, asking the first question. It perfectly sets the tone. Because like me, he likes his job a lot.
“I don’t like the parts of my job that require permission. That’s why I started writing. No one can tell you no, no one can say you can’t,” says Segel. “The best piece of advice I got was to try to remove as many of the systems of permission along the way as you can.”

Jason Segel is opening up about his time spent on “How I Met Your Mother”, revealing that he was “really unhappy” with his life and career during the final years of the show. The 43-year-old actor, and current star of the Apple TV+ series “Shrinking”, reflected on the hit CBS sitcom during a roundtable interview for The Hollywood Reporter.
“There was a period in my life and career around the last couple of years of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ where things were firing in both movies and TV, and everyone was telling me how well it was going and I was really unhappy,” he revealed.
About a father named Ted recounting his adventures of living with his friends in New York City, “How I Met Your Mother” ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014. During that time, Segel played Marshall Eriksen alongside Josh Radnor as Ted Mosby, Alyson Hannigan as Lily Aldrin,...

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”
And that’s pretty much it for Amazon Originals this month! Thankfully, there is a huge influx of library content to keep Prime Video subscribers entertained. May 4 sees the...

Now that the first season of “Shrinking” is fully available to all binge-watchers, it feels particularly urgent to highlight this Apple TV+ series’ lead actor, co-creator, writer and executive producer, Jason Segel. Despite the impressive list of iconic comedic characters like Marshall Eriksen (“How I Met Your Mother”) and Peter Bretter (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”), he has never been nominated for a major TV or film award. With the rising recognition of “Shrinking” and Segel’s undeniable likability factor, the upcoming 2023 Emmy nominations could easily correct that mistake. Here are five reasons why Segel deserves a spot in the Best Comedy Actor category this year.
1. Segel has had an impressive acting career.
At the turn of the century, Judd Appatow’s “Freaks and Geeks” (1999-2000) put Segel on the map as a promising comedy actor. “How I Met Your Mother” (2005-2014) brought him worldwide fame as the adorable, silly goof Marshall Eriksen.

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne are determined to prove that men and women can be totally platonic friends.
The “Neighbors” co-stars lead Apple TV+ comedy “Platonic,” a 10-episode series that both actors executive produce. “Neighbors” helmer Nick Stoller co-created, directed, and co-wrote the show with Francesca Delbanco.
Per the official synopsis, “Platonic” follows a platonic pair of former best friends approaching midlife (Rogen and Byrne) who reconnect after a long rift. The duo’s friendship becomes all-consuming — and destabilizes their lives in a hilarious way. Friends don’t let friends have mid-life crises alone
Luke Macfarlane, Tre Hale, Andrew Lopez, and Carla Gallo also star.
“Platonic” is produced by Sony Pictures Television, where series creator Stoller’s Global Solutions has an overall deal. Byrne, Rogen, Stoller, Delbanco, and Conor Welch executive produce.
“Platonic” is the latest collaboration between Byrne and Apple TV+, following her hit series “Physical” which is back...

When it comes to comedy, "Saturday Night Live" is one of the best gigs an actor can get. The show has produced some of the biggest stars in the business: Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and many more. But that list of comedy greats isn't complete without Kristin Wiig, who was a cast member on "SNL" from 2005 to 2012. Wiig's work on the show resulted in some of the most memorable sketches of the 21st century. Who could forget Gilly, the overly-excited Sue, or the beloved Target Lady?
While she was on the show, Wiig began dipping her toe into feature films, with small parts in comedies like "Knocked Up" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." Her biggest career moment came in 2011 with the release of "Bridesmaids," which she co-wrote and starred in alongside Maya Rudolph. Wiig also has a number of indie movies on her filmography, including...

Bill Hader appears on my screen from Los Angeles, unshaven, a little groggy and in an uncluttered white room. Faced with this pixelated version of him, I’m instantly reminded of his role in the 2008 Judd Apatow-produced romcom Forgetting Sarah Marshall, for which he appeared almost exclusively on video call, in the days before Zoom was a thing. “It was such a novelty back then,” he says, that furrowed brow unmistakeable. “It was like, ‘Whoa, this is new.’”
Saturday Night Live’s erstwhile Man of a Thousand Faces is here on my laptop to talk about his greatest creation, Barry Berkman, a marine turned assassin turned aspiring actor in the HBO comedy-drama Barry, which Hader writes and directs as well as playing the title character. The show has won multiple Emmys; critical adulation; obsessive fans. What began as an apparent riff on the hitman-with-a-heart-of-gold trope has evolved over four...
