Long before A24 produced Sean Durkin's emotionally obliterating drama "The Iron Claw" (read our review here), the stars at the center of the story, The Von Erichs, were wrestling royalty. It's difficult to fully encompass just how huge the Von Erich Boys were, both in size/stature and popularity. These were wrestlers so famous they appeared in commercials, had their own comic book series, and were known the world over without the assistance of national television or the internet. In fact, Durkin grew up watching old VHS tapes of Von Erich matches that took place in Texas while he was living in England. This is to say that if you know where to look, there's a hell of a lot of Von Erich merch floating out there. Autographed photos, T-shirts, bandanas, trading cards, posters, magazines, replica belts, and even the World Class Wrestling Von Erich-themed board game, are ready...

To quote Alice Cooper (and poorly paraphrase “High School Musical 2”), school’s out for summer. With Boppenheimer hitting air-conditioned theaters midway through July — just as countless actors and screenwriters head into the heat to join picket-lines in New York and Los Angeles — summer 2023 will no doubt prove a memorable one for Hollywood. What better time then to consider how the movies themselves represent the reason for the season?
The best summer vacation movies range in subject matter and can appeal to all sorts of different audiences. Kid-centric flicks, like “The Parent Trap,” and adult slashers, like the “Friday the 13th” films, explore the traditions and perils of sleep-away camp from spectacularly different view points. Meanwhile, road trip flicks, like the Audrey Hepburn-starring “Two for the Road” and Hindi film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” consider the ins-and-outs of traveling across the country with a similar romanticism but using tones separated by decades and cultures.

The Movie: Disney Channel's Theme: A History Mystery
Where You Can Stream It: YouTube via the Defunctland channel
The Pitch: Back in 2020, /Film's Jacob Hall published a Quarantine Stream entitled "'Defunctland' Is The Best Damn Theme Park YouTube Channel On The Internet." In it, he discussed the popular YouTube channel, run by Kevin Perjurer, and how his videos on theme park history go beyond regurgitating facts. Instead, Perjurer frames the events of this relatively niche industry as it relates to the broader societal culture in general. For instance, the 2018 video "The War for Disney's America" is both a rundown of a canceled Disney theme park and an examination of Disney's cultural and political place in American history.

The “High School Musical” franchise may be living on in series format over on Disney+, but the original performances are also finding new life on TikTok. In fact, one duo is re-creating scenes from the movie to near perfection.
Lexy Hutchinson and Crystal Hutchinson started their series on August 10, re-creating the entire “The Boys Are Back” number from “High School Musical 3: Senior Year.” And they made sure to get even the smallest details right, from Zac Efron and Corbin Bleu’s outfits to the franchise’s intricate choreography from Kenny Ortega.
In their latest video, the women performed Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and Ryan’s (Lucas Grabeel) version of “What I’ve Been Looking For” from the first “HSM.” And, as always, they nail it — right down to Sharpay’s sparkly wardrobe and Ryan’s bright green hat.

High School Musical EP on Those Season 2 Shakeups, Including Ricky and Nini's 'Journey of Discovery'
Life-altering changes are in store for East High’s finest — both on and off the stage — in Season 2 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. After all, as showrunner Tim Federle reminds TVLine, “Nothing feels higher stakes than high school theater.”
The premiere, which hit Disney+ on Friday, picked up with the Wildcats still riding high on their production of a certain movie-turned-stage musical, fully confident that the sequel would be their next show. Heck, Miss Jenn was already hitting up thrift stores in search of costumes. (“You’d think you could just find High School Musical 2 costumes at Old Navy,...

There is going to be plenty of drama in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season two, and we're not just talking about the theater department. On Thursday, Disney+ unveiled the first official trailer for the upcoming season, which premieres on May 14, and we're even more excited about the upcoming season. After doing High School Musical for their fall musical, the students at East High decide to do the natural followup with High School Musical 2. However, things go awry when Miss Jenn (Kate Reinders) runs into her ex-boyfriend (played by Derek Hough).
As the theater department moves forward with a new production of Beauty and the Beast, they are met with a few obstacles along the way. Nini (Olivia Rodrigo) has decided to leave East High and attend a theater school, separating her from her friends and boyfriend Ricky (Joshua Bassett), but there are also some new faces stirring up trouble.

It’s out with the old, in with the new. Goodbye skies of gray, hello skies of… actually, the skies are still pretty gray in the just-released trailer for Season 2 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, premiering Friday, May 14 on Disney+.
But maybe we’re just in our feelings over Nini (Olivia Rodrigo) and Ricky (Joshua Bassett) having to pivot to a long-distance relationship, following the former’s acceptance into a prestigious acting conservatory in Chicago. “It’s a huge deal to me,” Nini says in the trailer. “But, honestly, Ricky’s a huge deal to me, too.

Ok, Wildcats, it's time to get real. It's been 15 years since High School Musical made its grand debut. The iconic Disney Channel musical spawned a franchise that gave us three films, a Disney+ series adaptation, a stage musical, concert tours, books, and even video games! Jams like "Start of Something New" and "We're All in This Together" will go down as the boppiest bops to ever bop their way to the top! But there's one conversation that's long overdue among HSM fans: Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) deserved better.
I know that seems like a wild statement, especially considering that Troy has it made in every way possible, but it's true. I'm not saying Troy is an innocent cinnamon roll who needs protecting from the world - he definitely plays himself by making terrible decisions that exacerbate drama rather than making things easier - but it isn't all his fault. Despite...

It's always a treat when High School Musical stars revisit songs from the Disney classic. Vanessa Hudgens is one of the latest to take a trip down memory lane, as she recently crooned a socially distanced version of "Breaking Free" with Broadway actor Max Clayton. Hudgens, who plays Gabriella Montez in the film series, initially shared a clip of her performing the tune solo. But when her friend wanted in on the fun, she was totally game. "I Love @maxmclayton and u probably will too after u watch this lol," Hudgens captioned an Instagram teaser. "He did a duet and it's hilarious." The pair previously teamed up for a performance of High School Musical 2's "Gotta Go My Own Way" back in April.

Will Ropp started acting out of convenience.
“My sister was doing this musical theatre camp in Darien, Connecticut where I grew up and I wanted to do baseball summer camp, but my mom didn’t want to drive me and my sister to separate camps, so she pretty much forced me to do this musical theatre camp,” Ropp, 25, tells People. “They were doing Peter Pan that year and I begrudgingly auditioned and I got the role of John.”
Ropp continues to soar in his breakout role in The Way Back alongside Ben Affleck as his high school basketball team’s star 3-point shooter.

Meg Donnelly and Milo Manheim perform some epic numbers in Zombies 2, but just how well do they know other Disney Channel musicals? In honor of their new sequel, which premiered on Disney Channel on Feb. 14, we put the costars' knowledge to the test with a game of Dcom lyric trivia.
While they knew some songs, like "Fabulous" from High School Musical 2, right off the bat . . .
. . . others were a little harder to figure out. Manheim was particuarly stumped by an iconic Jonas Brothers song from Camp Rock.
Of course, they didn't miss a beat when they had to guess their own song, "Someday," from the first Zombies film.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: What’s your favorite dance sequence on TV ever?
Alan Sepinwall (@sepinwall), Rolling Stone
Look, there are surely more emotionally moving options than the one I’ve chosen. Mac’s interpretive dance about his sexuality from the last “It’s Always Sunny” finale was among the most remarkable and unexpected moments of recent TV. The year before, “Better Things” wonderfully concluded its season with Sam, her mom, and two of her daughters recreating the video from Christine and the Queens’ “Tilted” as a birthday present for Max. Anyone who votes for Sasha’s “Istanbul/Constantinople” dance from “Bunheads” here is absolutely right to do so — a great piece of choreography that was also revelatory about a character designed to be tough to love. This week’s question: What’s your favorite dance sequence on TV ever?
Alan Sepinwall (@sepinwall), Rolling Stone
Look, there are surely more emotionally moving options than the one I’ve chosen. Disney Channel’s new “High School Musical” series, which is being produced for Disney’s new as-yet unnamed streaming service, has a title and a plot. As revealed on Thursday, the 10-episode series will be called “High School Musical: The Musical,” and take a meta, docu-style approach to the franchise.
In “High School Musical: The Musical,” a group of students at fictional East High stage a performance of Disney’s “High School Musical” for their winter theater production. But as they plan the on-stage drama, they create as much drama off-stage.
Per Disney, each episode will include a song from the “High School Musical” trilogy of films, as well as on original song.
Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated screenwriter and former Broadway performer Tim Federle (“Ferdinand”) is executive producer with Oliver Goldstick (“Pretty Little Liars”).

What time is it? It's time to discuss "Bet on It," that's what time it is. Believe it or not, 10 years ago today, High School Musical 2 premiered on the Disney Channel. The sequel drew a record amount of viewers—17.6 million to be exact. Fans watched as the kids from East High School summered at Lava Springs, working as lifeguards (Vanessa Hudgens' Garbriella Montez), activity coordinators (Monique Coleman's Taylor McKessie) and more. As for Troy Bolton (Zac Efron)? He swiftly got promoted from caddy to children's golf teacher, thanks to some clever manipulation on behalf of drama queen Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale). Troy's dramatic solo number, "Bet on It," took six days...

Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgens had a little Disney Channel reunion at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday. During a commercial break, Vanessa took a break from her hosting duties to catch up with her former costar, giving us a heavy dose of nostalgia. While the "Malibu" singer is well-known for her TV series Hannah Montana, she also made a quick cameo in Vanessa's equally popular movie franchise in High School Musical 2 back in the day. Now that Miley is making new music, it sounds like the perfect time for the two to do a collaboration.

From School Of Rock and Enchanted through to Hail Caesar and Moana, we look at the unmissable musical numbers from modern movies...
The world has gone gaga for La La Land and it’s not difficult to see why. We love a good musical number. Sometimes there’s nothing more uplifting than a catchy tune with some fun choreography and other times music is the best, if only, way to depict a character's despair, fear or hope. Music taps into something very primal in us all and can often extract laughter and tears easier than two hours’ worth of dialogue.
Numerous classic musicals have graced the big screen since cinema began, but the 21st century alone has seen some fantastic songs in film. Some considered ‘musical films’ and others ‘films with music’, here are my top picks for this century’s best on-screen musical sequences.

30 years ago today, audiences were treated again to the utterly watchable pair of Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. The Karate Kid, Part II opened in theaters on June 20, 1986. In the sequel, released two years after the original film, Daniel’s wax on, wax off early training days are behind him, and he’s impressively slicing through six blocks of ice. The boy and his mentor travel together to Mr. Miyagi’s home village in Okinawa, Japan. Sparks fly between Daniel and Kumiko, the niece of Mr. Miyagi’s childhood girlfriend, to the synthesizer-tastic tune of “Glory of Love” by Peter Cetera. The song hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 later that summer and got an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. Other notable June 20 happenings in pop culture history: • 1948: The Ed Sullivan Show — then titled Toast of the Town — premiered on CBS. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis performed in that first episode,...

Vanessa Hudgens has her friend's back! The 26-year-old, who is currently starring on Broadway in "Gigi," stopped by the Bravo clubhouse for "Watch What Happens Live" on Thursday -- and got candid in a series of questions about her Bff, Selena Gomez, with host Andy Cohen. During the show the "High School Musical" alum was asked if she helped her "Spring Breakers" costar avoid her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, during the 2015 Met Gala earlier this month. Although the actress didn't give too much away ... it definitely sounds like she had Gomez's back at the high-fashion event! "She's one of my best friends, and you just want to have your girlfriend's backs so that's what I did," she revealed. "We didn't like try to avoid him or anything, but no one really want to see your ex-boyfriend!" Aside from the Jelena questions, Andy didn't let the brunette beauty get away without at...

Let's be honest: sequels rarely live up to their popular predecessors.
With a boatload of cash on the line, who can blame classics such as "Home Alone" and "Superman" for spawning perfunctory follow-ups? Still, that's no excuse for some obvious mistakes. While not every gaffe is cringe-worthy, the "High School Musical 2" goof is especially painful and really makes you wonder who wasn't paying attention.
Here are 15 "oops" moments from blockbuster sequels. As usual, all photos are courtesy of MovieMistakes.

The fifth season premiere of AMC's "The Walking Dead" has broken one of the last records there is to break. Sunday night's broadcast pulled in 17.3 million viewers in Live+Same Day ratings, making it the highest rated show in cable television history.
It beats previous record holder, "High School Musical 2," which nabbed 17.2 million viewers in 2007 and has held onto the title of highest-rated live/same day non-sports telecast in cable history ever since.
'Dead' continues to grow, its number up from 16.1 million Live+Same Day ratings for the fourth season premiere. That episode went on to 21.1 million total viewers, the fifth season premiere is expected to top 22 million.
The show also dominated social media with a total of 1.32 million tweets - the highest total for a 2014 drama premiere.
