Girish Karnad was one of the true intellectuals of post Independent India. A polyglot, playwright, actor, film maker, aesthete, scholar, teacher, critic and a humanist Girish was never a close friend but someone whom I always looked forward to meeting.
We came to know each other around 1972 through several common friends like Shyam Benegal, Basu Chatterjee, Satyadev Dubey and B.V. Karanth though I was acquainted with his work from the mid-sixties. His plays 'Yayati' (1961), 'Tughlaq' (1964), 'Hayavadana' (1972) and 'Nagamandala' (1988) rank among the finest Indian plays post-Independence.
A Rhodes scholar, Girish interestingly started by reading Mathematics in college. He was to become a scholar in history, literature, cinema and stagecraft. He was steeped in Indian tradition and had a deep study of our mythology, specially the Mahabharata.
He has won practically every award which an artiste in India can aspire for - Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Sahitya Akademi Award, Kalidas Samman, Jnanpith Award,...

Indian playwright, filmmaker and actor Girish Karnad, star of such films as “Manthan,” “Nishant” and “Swami,” died June 10 in his home in Bengaluru, India. He was 81 and had a “multi-organ failure,” according to reports. Working in alternate regional and Hindi-language films separate from Bollywood, Karnad made a name for himself in the 1970s. India conferred its highest literary honor, the Jnanpith Award on him in 1998.
As a director, he made his debut in 1972 with “Vamsa Vriksha,” by renowned Kannada novelist S.L. Bhyrappa. It was co-helmed with B.V. Karanth, another luminary of Kannada cinema. It touched on the then-taboo subject of widow remarriage and introduced audiences to the actor Vishnuvardhan. The film was later remade in another Telugu, another regional language, and starred Anil Kapoor.
Karnad made his acting bow in 1970 with “Samskara” (Funeral Rites), which he adapted from U.R. Ananthamurthy’s novel of the same name, which deals with caste issues.

New Delhi, April 29: Nagesh Kukunoor describes filmmaking as a test of certainty and conviction of a person because he feels making movies is a "long solo" journey, and one has to stay "sane" during the incubation period.

It’s safe to say that the film has become so awaited to see how the results come off with Kareena Kapoor taking on a meaty dramatic role after some time. With its interesting trailer that hooked everyone in, to its fun ‘Halkat Jawani’ number, Heroine is definitely looking good for the heroine dominated season of 2012. Salim and Sulaiman take the music after their success with Fashion. With 5 tracks on offer, the Heroine soundtrack has some tracks to savour, but it does feel like a letdown.

Nagesh Kukunoor's next venture, Laxmi, is delayed as his producer backed out. The future of the film which deals with human trafficking issue seems to be in lurch due to financial crunch. A source close to the director reveals, "The film was supposed to go on floor in March. The auditions happened long ago and cast is locked. The locations are finalized in Hyderabad. We have been waiting for the last few months for the film to go on floor. Tired of waiting, some of the crew members have left and joined other projects. Though the crew is told that Nagesh's back surgery has led to the delay but everyone knows that the actual reason is something else. The financer has backed out and Nagesh is finding it hard to find another producer for the film." Unfortunately, the director of critically acclaimed films like Dor and Iqbal is struggling...

Beginning with Hamesha in 1997, the great musical duo of Salim and Sulaiman Merchant have given Bollywood’s actors and actresses, and of course, fans some of the greatest music heard and danced to in Hindi Cinema. They are the gentlemen behind incredible soundtracks such as Aaja Nachle and Chak De! India in 2007, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Fashion for 2008, Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year and Kurbaan in 2009, Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), Ladies vs Ricky Bahl and Love Breakups Zindagi for 2011 and so far in 2012 Jodi Breakers with more to come. Phew! The mind boggles with how many great songs are on those Ost’s and how many tracks of theirs I have added to my all time favorite song playlists. Besides composing, the brothers have embarked on a world tour. They just finished up a hit Us tour and now are getting ready to thrill and entertain UK audiences on July 14th and 15th.

Nagesh Kukunoor's next titled Laxmi deals with the issue of human trafficking, not surprisingly so. The director who is known to make issue based and women centric films, tells the story of a 13-year-old-girl who was pushed into prostitution and was rescued from it later. It is apparently based on a true story. A well-placed source close to the director of the much acclaimed films, Iqbal and Dor reveals, "Nagesh has always felt strongly about the issue of human trafficking. This is something that has always bothered him. But he was waiting for a right story to come his way. He felt very moved when he heard about the heart wrenching story of Laxmi and decided to make a movie on it. He feels this story needs to be told to the world." The source further divulges, "The film will be shot in Hyderabad which not only happens to...

His experimental intellect made him in accepting the challenge to try with actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Ayesha Takia or John Abraham in his movies. Mumbai, Jan 26: Acclaimed filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor understands the importance of casting popular actors in movies for box office success, but says he is not ready to compromise on his casting criteria just for that.
Most of Kukunoor's films -- "Hyderabad Blues", "Rockford", "Iqbal" and "Dor" -- have found critical acclaim, but didn't mint too much moolah. Could it be because he hasn't considered casting A-list actors?
"It (having big stars) does make a difference you want your film to be seen by the widest audience. No one controls this...If you don't have any of the 10 main actors, then you are always going to struggle.

But Mod is a role she can sink her teeth into.” He had earlier ...
