Broadway, you might have heard, is back, and, miracle of miracles, it seems to have figured out how to present a truly excellent television awards show.
Splitting the traditional three hours into four and somehow coming up with the right math, Tony organizers, Paramount+ and CBS presented a two-hour livestreamed 74th Annual Tony Awards and, immediately following, the two-hour broadcast concert special The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back!. The approach worked remarkably well. The no-nonsense presentation of award announcements and acceptance speeches was followed by a lively special that impressively showcased contemporary Broadway musicals on their home turfs and classic reunions that felt fresh and welcome.
Perhaps best of all, both portions of the evening were emceed by hosts who avoided entirely the tired combination of snark, smarm and insider smirk that has been de rigueur on the Oscars and Emmys for more than a decade now. Audra McDonald...

If it wasn't for Anthony Ramos's off-Broadway show Heart and Lights closing during previews, he may never have crossed paths with Lin-Manuel Miranda. Fortunately for us, Anthony was able to audition for what was then called The Hamilton Mixtape, book the job, and meet Lin-Manuel, aka the man who would become his mentor. Their chemistry on stage as both friends and father and son (Anthony pulls double duty in Hamilton as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton) is one of the best parts of the musical and demonstrates just how close the pair got over the course of their year on the show.
While Hamilton may have been the catalyst for their relationship, it's not the only musical the pair share. After Anthony was cast in the workshop of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel asked him to be part of 21 Chump Street, a 14-minute musical based on episode #457 of This American Life called "What I Did For Love.

It's going to take us a long time to recover from Simon Cowell's brutal Six Chair Challenge, but he did at least (eventually) manage to choose the Overs he's taking to Judges' Houses - even if he did admit he thinks he's made two "big mistakes". Cripes.
But it's too late to change his mind - and he does have a very strong category. But who are the six Overs now fighting it out for a place in the live shows?
1. Anton Stephans
Age: 44
From: London
Job: Performer and backing singer
Remind me: Anton - or Lovely Anton, as we've christened him - made a big impression on Simon right from the first audition, when he brought his dog Honey with him. But his voice also left a lasting impact, with his solo performance of 'A Song For You' at Boot Camp cementing his place in the competition (and making Olly Murs cry!

Red Band Society, Season 1, Episodes 6-10
Airs Wednesdays at 9pm Et on Fox
Red Band Society‘s first season has been suffering from tonal problems and narrative inconsistency throughout most of its run, but with this final episode of the year, the show was able to find a way to unify the story, as well as develop the characters in a way that felt genuine, with promise for interesting growth. After a string of episodes that have felt disjointed from one another, emotionally contrived, and at times completely ridiculous and unremarkable, the fall finale shines. The episode effectively gives the kids an emotional story, having them react to the departure of two fellow red band-ers from the hospital, with the adults handling their own plot about interoffice dating. This episode not only offers a compelling story, but also ties in plot points from previous episodes that seemed random or unearned,...

Giving the deluxe version of superstar DJ and producer David Guetta’s new album a spin, it soon becomes clear why previously released promo singles “Bad” and”‘Shot Me Down” are kept apart from the main body of Listen and repackaged as bonus tracks.
Inspired by Cher’s “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down),” later covered by Nancy Sinatra and then pushed into peoples’ hearts via Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Volume 1 – the Frenchman gives the classic song a new twist. Alongside Skylar Grey, “Shot Me Down” sees the decades-old track enveloped by Guetta’s rampant, pulsating club sounds for a modern, worthwhile remake. Not content with hooking up with Grey again on the darker, primal “Rise,” “Bad” featuring Showtek and Vassy, also races towards the dance floor with its thumping bassline and laser sharp synths.
In short, the handful of cuts stuck onto the end of Listen are...

First, let me say that I loved my days in community theater. It’s where I learned how to do a time-step and workshop different accents — including “British” and “unplaceable European” — and do mic check exclusively with Whitney Houston songs. I loved every production I was in, no matter how stressful or awful, because the biggest truth about community theater is that misery loves company. If I’m miserable in a cat costume during the sixth straight hour of tech, I have to believe everyone else is miserable, too.

You may not have seen A Chorus Line but most everyone knows the song “One” thanks to its endless use in other productions (think Treehouse of Horror V, Phineas and Ferb, Scrubs) throughout the years. Since the play debuted Off-Broadway in 1975, it has gone on to become one of the best known musicals of the latter 20th Century. One reason it endured a run of 6137 performances on Broadway was its emotional honesty, bare bones set, and soul-bearing songs. As conceived by Michael Bennett, it was brought to life by Marvin Hamlisch (music), Edward Kleban (lyrics), and James Kirkwood Jr. (book) at a time when everyone was doing a little soul searching.
By the time the 1985 film adaptation from director Sir Richard Attenborough arrived, it was heralded as a return of the musical to the movies. Unfortunately, the so-so movie failed to ignite that revival and was mostly rejected by those who adored the film.

Cory Monteith passed away suddenly Saturday (July 13) and his "Glee" co-stars have been quick to express their devastation and grief over his death.
Matthew Morrison, who plays glee club teacher Mr. Schuester on the Fox show, is currently performing "Up Close and Personal with Matthew Morrison" at 54 Below in New York City and at Sunday's performance, a source tells Us Weekly that the actor dedicated a song to Monteith.
"Matt came out before the show started and said, 'We lost a great young man too soon. He said Cory was a beautiful person," then he told the crowd he would like to honor Cory with this performance and chose "What I Did For Love," a classic Broadway ballad from "A Chorus Line."
"He was very emotional on stage," the source continues. "It was difficult for him to get up to perform, but he did not want to disappoint anyone."

Many Broadway stars have made the transition to TV recently, but for the majority of them, it didn't exactly work out.
At Sunday night's 2013 Tony Awards, Andrew Rannells of the now-canceled "New Normal," Megan Hilty of the long-suffering "Smash" and Laura Benanti of the late comedy "Go On" took the opportunity to poke fun at their efforts on the small screen.
The trio teamed up with Tonys host and "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris to perform a musical number (above) lamenting the struggle of landing a gig on a network series and leaving the New York stage behind for La.
Rannells kicked things off with "I Want To Be On A TV Show," a spoof of "West Side Story's" "America." Then Hilty appeared, parodying "Gypsy's" “You Gotta Have a Gimmick." After she sang, "You gotta have a series if you want a shot at fame,...

"Glee" star Lea Michele turns 25 years old Monday (Aug. 29) and in honor of her birthday, we'd like to take a look back at our favorite Lea performances from the show. Say what you will about the character of Rachel Berry, but Lea can straight-up sing.
While her group numbers are always fun, we really love her soaring voice on her diva solo numbers and none show it off better than "Defying Gravity," "What I Did for Love" and "Don't Rain on My Parade."
So happy birthday, Lea Michele! What are your favorite Lea Michele numbers, "Glee" fans?
"Glee" returns Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. Et on Fox.

So there is this crazy show where high school students randomly break into choreographed song and dance. They sing studio-perfect numbers accompanied by outrageous set pieces (snow, rainstorms, entire chorus lines of tuxedoed backup dancers). They say sassy things and silly things and sometimes even sweet things.
And, until recently, they had a little something for everyone – the outcasts, the jocks, the gays, the lesbians, the bisexuals, the misanthropic. But with the evolution and current devolution of Brittana happening before our eyes, I have to wonder: What is in Glee for gay women anymore?
Fans of the Brittany S. Pierce and Santana Lopez coupling have watched gleefully as the twosome went from simple background dancers to ponytail twirling besties to friends with scissoring benefits. The pairing has delighted us with the little moments – a pinky hold here, a head rest there. What started being played for laughs – mean girl Santana...

Hi there,
I’m Josh aka PenguinJosh and this article provides a brief review of the season premieres of the following shows; Undercovers, Hawaii Five-0, Glee, Grey’s Anatomy and Chuck. Expect more detailed reviews in future for some of these shows.

Undercovers
I’m not sure what it is about this show that really makes me dislike it. Perhaps it was that my expectations were too high because it was an Abrams show? Perhaps it was an exciting opener that went quickly downhill? Perhaps it was that despite saying “Bienvenidos a Madrid”, the next clip said “Welcome to Paris”? Perhaps it was too much exposition and lead actors that fail to present real, likeable characters?
Undercovers is, in a nutshell, a show about two retired agents who are married but have been now turned spy again and are working together.

There was so much to love about this week’s Glee premiere: new faces (Sunshine Corazon and Coach Beiste, for starters), that amazing “Telephone” sing-off and, as always, Sue. But when she wasn’t sending Sunshine to a crack house, Rachel was showing off some pretty darn cute outfits.
One of my favorites was the sweetly simple navy dress she wore for her rousing rendition of “What I Did For Love.” Glee costume designer Lou Eyrich gave us the scoop on the outfit, and lucky for you Glee fans, the dress, a collaboration between Flat Back by Pegleg NYC and Urban Outfitters,...

It’s been one long summer, waiting the return of Glee. The season premier episode started with a sort of summer recap itself when Jacob goes around shoving a microphone in the Glee member’s faces asking about their summer adventures. We learn a few things like that Puck had a vasectomy for having impregnated Quinn, and that he is still pining after her and that Tina and Mike hooked up over the summer and it has left Artie heart broken.
We soon learn there had a been a 10% budget cut to give more funds to the athletics department, and with the cut comes a new female football named coach Beist (pronounced Beast). Sue’s reply to the entire situation is "female football coach, like a male nurse, sin against nature.” Sue spends the entire episode trying to sabotage Beist by teaming up with Shuester to prank her, bullying her,...

Last night's Glee didn't operate as a tribute to any single artist (Madonna, Lady Gaga, etc.), although we can look forward(?) to a Britney Spears tribute next week. But for the season opener we got a bit of a mishmash: two big showtunes with some R&B, club, and alt-rock thrown in for good measure.
Five tunes in all. You can check them out or relive them below. Which was your favorite?
New Directions hits the quad for "Empire State of Mind."
Rachel (Leah Michelle) and Sunshine Corazon (Charice) duet on "Telephone."
Sam (Chord Overstreet) wows the Glee club guys with his huge mouth and "Billionaire."
Next page. The show tunes!
Sunshine Corazon auditions with "Listen" from Dreamgirls.
Rachel belts out "What I Did For Love" from A Chorus Line.

There was music in the air Tuesday night as Fox's hit musical comedy Glee returned with its season 2 premiere. It was back-to-school time at McKinley High, and some new faces showed up and showed off their musical chops. Pop sensation Charice performed twice as Sunshine Corazon, singing "Telephone" with Rachel in the ladies' room and then "Listen" for her glee club audition, before deciding to transfer to Vocal Adrenaline. Sam Evans, another new student, impressed Finn and Artie when he sang "Billionaire" during an informal audition. But when he failed to show up for the real thing, Finn - who'd...

All the concerns over a sophomore slump seemed to be put to rest on Tuesday night (September 21) when the second season of "Glee" officially kicked off. Not only was the episode an excellent re-entry into the world of McKinley High, but it also served several purposes: Reintroducing all your favorite characters, smoothly extending the story lines of the first season, debuting a handful of new characters (including a new sparring partner for Sue Sylvester in Coach Beiste and the new Vocal Adrenaline coach Dustin Goolsby) and, most importantly, rolling out some smashing musical performances. In the lead-up to the second season, all the talk seems to have been centered around the hotly-anticipated Britney Spears-centric episode (which is coming next week). But as the second season premiere of "Glee" proved, it can turn the music up a notch even without a gimmick.

After a summer full of cosmetic and reproductive surgery, McKinley High's New Directions is back for a new school year.
But first, Glee's own scandal blogger, Jacob Ben Israel (Josh Sussman), starts the new season out with one simple question asked on behalf of the multi-media empire that is his blog: "What did you do over your big gay summer?"
The first person he asks is the object of his extremely creepy affections, Rachel. And I couldn't really listen to her answer because I was so horrified by the big pillowy explosion of lips through which she was speaking. Not even her long, thick false eyelashes and broad swipes of blush could distract me from them. Especially the upper lip. It looked like a shapeless slug under her nose. Who did this to you, Lea?
Anyway, there was nothing gay about Rachel's summer, except, of course, her two gay dads.

Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) was up to her usual soaring ballads on the season premiere of "Glee." The call for this episode was "What I Did for Love," one the most well-known songs from long-running Broadway musical "A Chorus Line."
Just as an aside, if you've never seen "A Chorus Line," you really should. The live show is exceptional, but as far as movie adaptations go, the movie is also excellent. Did you know Michael Douglas is in it?
What did you think of the season premiere, Gleeks? Did it live up to your expectations? How did you feel about newcomers Charice and Chord Overstreet? And don't forget -- next week is Britney Spears week.

Los Angeles – "Glee" is back for its sophomore year with a new football coach, two new ear- and eye-catching students, and an identity crisis for big man on campus Finn. There's also something of an identity crisis for Fox TV's hit series as trouble comes fast and furious for the McKinley High glee club and its members in Tuesday's debut episode (8 p.m. Edt). There's barely room for the buoyancy that infused "Glee" last season."Let's show them how down we are," says glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), challenging his students to stage a number that will persuade others to join the club branded as a way station for losers.Instead, the hour itself verges on being a downer. Will goes to the dark side with cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, Rachel's self-absorption becomes ickier and, most unsettling of all, a molestation accusation is played, literally, with a wink.

One week away from the season 2 premiere, "Glee" tides fans over with the audio of "Empire State of Mind" cover.
