You can barely swing a cat in Hollywood without hitting a Jane Austen adaptation. The famous English author has a light social satire for every occasion, and each one has been mined by the film industry over and over again. Some adaptations are period dramas, some transpose the stories to different historical eras or cultures, and some defy genres entirely. A couple even turn Austen's books into horror stories.
But audiences never seem to get tired of seeing these familiar, heartwarming tales on screen. The next few years, for example, will see two different adaptations of "Persuasion" released -- one for Netflix starring Dakota Fanning, and another with "Succession"...

Editor’s note: British director Roger Michell died this week at the age of 65. Here, Sony Pictures Classics co-president Michael Barker, who distributed several of Michell’s films — including the upcoming “The Duke” — remembers his colleague.
Life stopped for many of us this week when writer/director Roger Michell passed away suddenly at the age of 65. He was a gentle, warm, soft-spoken, eloquent, witty, beautiful human being, in addition to being a strong, uncompromising artist of range and brilliance.
Only three weeks ago, he was in Telluride with us accompanied by Helen Mirren and producer Nicky Bentham to present his latest wonderfully rich picture, “The Duke.” He was seen zipping up and down the streets of Telluride on his rented bicycle, his fifth time there (three of them with us), introducing his film, enjoying the company of locals whose friendships he had continued with each visit, at dinners trading legendary...

It was the summer of 2020, and production on films and television had tentatively started up again. We didn't know how badly we needed a Dakota Johnson-led Netflix adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion until now. On May 5, Variety revealed that Henry Golding would be joining Johnson for the upcoming Netflix film. Although we'd originally expected Golding to play the dashing Captain Wentworth, Deadline reported on May 17 that Cosmo Jarvis had been cast in the role. Poised as a modern retelling of Austen's final novel, the story follows 27-year-old Anne Elliot as she deals with the reality of her family's bankruptcy. As if Anne's life couldn't get any more confusing, her former fiancé, Frederick Wentworth, reenters her life just as the snobbish William Elliot makes his intentions known.
With a screenplay written by Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow and Carrie Cracknell making her directorial debut, Persuasion is set to be a sweeping romantic drama. Rumored to have started fittings and rehearsals ahead of filming this month,...

Henry Golding has been cast alongside Dakota Johnson in Netflix’s adaptation of the Jane Austen novel “Persuasion.”
The movie will serve as a modern-day retelling of the romantic drama, centering on the conforming Anne Elliot (Johnson), who lives with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy. When Anne, unmarried at 27-years-old, reconnects with Frederick Wentworth, a man she was once persuaded to reject, she faces a second chance at love.
Golding, who shot to stardom as the heartthrob Nick Young in “Crazy Rich Asians” and later led the romantic comedies “A Simple Favor” and “Last Christmas,” surprisingly has not been cast as the love interest. Instead, he will play Mr. Elliot, the cousin of Johnson’s character. Netflix has not announced the actor who will play Frederick Wentworth.
Carrie Cracknell, known for directing Jake Gyllenhaal in “Sea Wall/ A Life” on Broadway, is stepping behind the camera in her feature directorial debut.

Exclusive: Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding will play Mr. Elliot opposite Dakota Johnson’s Anne Elliot in Netflix and MRC’s modern feature take of Jane Austen’s classic novel Persuasion.
In the Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow penned script, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities, living with her snobby family who are on the brink of bankruptcy. When Frederick Wentworth—the dashing one she once sent away—crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances. I hear what attracted Golding to the role was the opportunity to play against type; Mr. Elliot being the callous and classic Austen foil.
As previously announced, Carrie Cracknell, who directed Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge to Tony nominations in 2019 in Sea Wall/ A Life on Broadway, will make her feature directorial debut here with Persuasion.

Exclusive: MRC Film, through its Elizabeth Cantillon-led romance label, has optioned feature rights to the bestselling Nicholas Sparks novel The Return. Perhaps this sparks the return of romantic films, a genre that the author has contributed to with 11 filmed novel adaptations that include The Notebook, Message in a Bottle, Nights in Rodanthe and Dear John. The Notebook is being adapted into a musical with music and lyrics by Ingrid Michaelson.
The film will be produced by Cantillon, Sparks and Theresa Park.
“I’ve been a fan of Nick’s novels and jumped at the opportunity to acquire The Return,” Cantillon said. “Its depiction of an injured veteran in a modern love story is both insightful and sensitive, but most all hopeful. It’s a great story to tell any time, but especially right now.”

Jane Austen film and TV adaptations are plentiful. I mean, how many times have we seen projects like “Sense and Sensibility,” “Pride and Prejudice,” and “Emma” brought to life on screen? But even though we’ve seen these stories done a number of times before, it doesn’t mean that new versions can’t be made that pique our interest, such as a new version of “Persuasion” that is being developed at Netflix.

Dakota Johnson has landed the starring role in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of the Jane Austen novel “Persuasion,” the feature directorial debut of acclaimed theater director Carrie Cracknell. The director most recently worked on Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge’s Tony-nominated performances in the play “Sea Wall/A Life.” The film adaptation is written by “Rain Man” Oscar winner Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow.
The film promises to take a fresh approach to the beloved story. Here’s Netflix’s logline: “Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities. When Frederick Wentworth—the dashing one she once sent away—crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances.”
Dakota Johnson recently starred in the cancer drama “Our Friend,” released by Gravitas earlier this year.

In preparation for Autumn de Wilde’s Emma, costume designer Alexandra Byrne spent her time researching her favorite time period for clothing. “The reason I like this period is that it’s the beginning of fashion plates being published for women,” Byrne says. “The combination of the fashion plate and looking at the original garments lets you understand them as clothes rather than costumes.” Based on the Jane Austen novel of the same name, and starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the eponymous role, Emma follows Emma Woodhouse, a young woman who spends her time meddling in the romantic lives of those around her. Here, Byrne digs into her fresh, personality-focused approach to a well-loved period story.
Deadline: How did you get involved with Emma?

Updated Designing the costumes for Emma, the Autumn de Wilde-directed adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic period novel, was a balance between staying true to the era (the early 1800s) while leaving room for some creativity and artistic license, says Oscar-nominated costume designer Alexandra Byrne.
“To design a period film, you need to know and research the period, so that you can make decisions to enable the storytelling from a point of view of knowledge, as opposed to a point of ignorance,” she said during Focus Features’ panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees awards-season event. “Autumn [de Wilde] wanted to know everything about the period, she wanted the comedy and the humor to come from period, it was our job to really understand it. We’re not here to be museum archivists, we’re here to tell a story, but I think you can only do that truthfully if you...

Of all the live-action movies nominated for Oscars on March 15, the one with the earliest release date was Autumn de Wilde’s “Emma.” The Jane Austen adaptation starring Anya Taylor Joy opened 13 months ago, in February 2020, before much of America and the world underwent Covid lockdown. But the vibrant film was cited with two nominations, for Best Makeup and Hairstyling and for Best Costume Design, the latter a sixth nod for Alexandra Byrne (who won in 2008 for “Elizabeth: The Golden Age”).
“My sixth, oh you make me feel very old,” Byrne said to TheWrap with a sharp laugh. “But that’s Ok. It is my sixth and I’m proud that they’ve all been very different. That’s the most exciting bit. That’s the thing I love most about it.”

This updated version of Jane Austen’s final novel is standard romcom fare –minus satire, wit and charm
Do we need a defensive ring of steel petticoats erected around Jane Austen’s novels – something, anything to stop them being updated into perky formulaic romcoms like this? Modern Persuasion is, to state the obvious, a modern version of Austen’s last (and arguably best) novel Persuasion: the story of Anne Elliot, who at 27 – still a mere slip of a girl – is staring down the barrel of spinsterdom. Eight years earlier she made the terrible mistake of turning down an offer of marriage from a penniless naval officer. The film-makers have meticulously transferred the book’s characters and plotting – and, to be fair, some of its warmth – to modern-day New York. But lost in adaptation is any trace of Austen’s wit and razor-sharp satire.

In the Netflix smash hit Bridgerton, the not-so-polite London regency society serves as the backdrop for a whole lotta drama. Adapted from Julia Quinn's novels, Shonda Rhimes's show offers an inclusive twist on the whitewashed period dramas of Jane Austen's time. The essence of Austen's writing - the wit, the snark, and the undercurrent of knowing - is present, too, in Rhimes's series. Astute viewers can locate all six of Austen's works in Bridgerton's themes and characters. While the late Ms. Austen might have blushed at some of the (ahem) positions in which Rhimes's characters find themselves, there's no denying her influence.
How Bridgerton References Sense and Sensibility
In Sense and Sensibility, sisters Marianne and Elinor differ in almost every way. Elinor is reserved, polite, and introspective. Marianne is fiery and prone to the occasional social faux pas. Similarly, Daphne, the diamond of her social circle, is the epitome of grace,...

In the world of costume drama, Alexandra Byrne is one of the true masters of the medium, especially the Elizabethan and Recency eras in England. After beginning her career in theater, Byrne’s work in films started with 1995’s Jane Austen adaptation “Persuasion,” and continued through 1998’s “Elizabeth” and its sequel “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (for which Byrne won an Oscar in 2009) and the ambitiously denim-outfitted “Mary Queen of Scots.”
She’s also a key contributor to the aesthetic of Marvel’s superhero franchise, having designed the costumes for “The Avengers” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” among others.
More recently, she worked on a sort of bookend project to “Persuasion,” another Austen adaptation called “Emma.” (period included) that was released to great acclaim in theaters mere weeks before the Covid lockdowns. Directed by photographer Autumn de Wilde (her filmmaking debut) and starring Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) in the title role,...

Back in 1995, in the midst of cinema’s brief fixation with Jane Austen, director Roger Michell made the definitive film of “Persuasion”: as literate and elegant as it was underestimated upon release. That same year, Amy Heckerling set the bar for modernized Austen adaptations with her lithely funny and era-defining “Emma” riff “Clueless.” A quarter-century later, the straightforwardly titled “Modern Persuasion” falls some way short of either benchmark. Refashioning Austen’s bittersweet final novel about love surmounting prickly English class politics as a peppy romantic comedy of missed connections among the moneyed New York media set, Alex Appel and Jonathan Lisecki’s film is both too innocuous and too flatly imagined to stir much feeling either way.
What it does have going for it is Alicia Witt, a likable, spirited star too little used by Hollywood of late, but recently a leading mainstay of Hallmark holiday movies — from which...

"What better way for me to get over my first love than to watch him fall in love with someone else...?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for a romantic comedy titled Modern Persuasion, made by actors / filmmakers Alex Appel and Jonathan Lisecki. The film is an adaptation of Jane Austen's 1817 novel "Persuasion", updated as a story about Modern Persuasion. A happily single woman focused on her career in New York is forced to deal with the aftermath of feelings about a failed relationship when "the one that got away" hires her company. The film stars Alicia Witt as Wren Cosgrove, with Bebe Neuwirth, Daniella Pineda, Liza Lapira, Mark Moses, Li Jun Li, Dominic Rains, and Shane McRae. This looks super cliche and extra schmaltzy, but it might be a fun watch with this rather spunky cast. Take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Appel & Lisecki's Modern Persuasion,...

On the surface, Jessica Swale would seem to have a lot of beginner’s luck. The first play she ever wrote, “Blue Stockings,” was a massive success with audiences and critics, premiering at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2013. Her first official foray behind the camera as writer-director, a short film titled “Leading Lady Parts,” starred a who’s who of powerhouse women and quickly went viral. And now her feature film debut as writer-director, “Summerland,” comes out this week to warm reviews for its story and lead actors Gemma Arterton and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. She also has several scripts in various stages of development, from her own works to adaptations of Jane Austen’s “Persuasion” and the novel “Longbourn.”
Of course, luck has little to do with Swale’s success; she’s a self-proclaimed workaholic who spent a decade building her bona fides as a stage director on such plays as “Sense and Sensibility...

As we’ll never know what film was denied winning the Palme d’Or over the weekend at the never-happened 2020 Cannes Film Festival — likely due to a caged bat in a Chinese market — this is as good a time as any to size up some of the films that, deserving or not, have won the coveted gold trophy in the 64 years of the festival’s Palme era.
Gazing over the list, what’s immediately striking is the number of lasting classics that emerged from the 1960s and 1970s; seven of the top ten best by my estimation had their world premieres at Cannes during that period, while only three from the past four decades made the grade.
By contrast, on my list for the ten worst Cannes top prize winners were four films from the 1990s and three made since then. On the plus side, more countries not previously considered...

From 1940 to 1995, no motion picture was made with a screenplay based on any Jane Austen novel. There were some negligible low-budget miniseries along the way, but nothing major. Then came the 90s and everything changed. In 1995 alone, the world got to enjoy the pleasures of Roger Michell's Persuasion and the lavish TV adaptation of Pride & Prejudice with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth.
