I write about "New Girl" only under two circumstances: When Sepinwall is hospitalized or when Sepinwall is on vacation. And even then, I still only write about "New Girl" under two circumstances: When it's a premiere or a finale and therefore there are plot points that maybe could stand some discussion. Fortunately, Sepinwall is on vacation and, at least so far as I know -- Knock wood! -- his health is fine. However, Tuesday (May 5) night marked the fourth season finale for "New Girl," so I guess "Clean Break" is as good a time as any to write a few words about the state of "New Girl." "Clean Break." As it says above, "Clean Break" is the title of the finale. It's not "Clean, Shaven," as I initially typed, because "Clean, Shaven" is an intense film from recently prolific cable TV helmer Lodge Kerrigan, featuring a marvelous performance by Peter Greene.

She's the gobby scene-stealer from student sitcom Fresh Meat. So how did she portray Joyce Vincent, a woman who lay dead and forgotten in her flat for three years, in the new film Dreams of a Life?
Joyce Vincent was found in a bedsit above a shopping centre in Wood Green, north London, in 2006, three years after she had died. Council workers, finally spurred into action by rent arrears, had to scale a mountain of post before they could get through the door to where she lay in front of the sofa, the television still on. Reading the scant news reports, it was easy to jump to the conclusion she had been a marginal figure, perhaps a drug addict or somebody with no family or friends. But there were details that nagged – the Christmas presents she had been wrapping lay next to her (who were they for and why hadn't they missed her?...

This actress, writer and ex-slam poet has the charisma to go from a comedy turn on TV to the lead in a compelling drama documentary
Who is she?
A 27-year-old from Stoke Newington, London, who learned the lessons of the acting trade early. At five-and-a-half, she lied about her age to get into drama classes – pretending to be six.
She's been in the industry for a while. Why are we just hearing about her?
She's been busy filling her CV with other activities: acting on stage; writing plays and a script for the BBC; developing a TV drama with Idris Elba; starring as Vod in Channel 4's Fresh Meat. Oh, and as a teenager she was a champion slam poet. The reason film people are taking notice is that she appears in Carol Morley's brilliant Dreams of a Life (pictured, in cinemas on 16 December).
Isn't that a documentary?...

Thanks to Criterion, Stanley Kubrick's The Seafarers is now the only film from the iconic director not available on Blu-ray. Criterion recently brought Kubrick's Paths of Glory to beautiful high-definition and now the director's 1956 heist feature, The Killing, arrives with a special inclusion, the helmer's 1955 feature Killer's Kiss. Releasing The Killing is one thing and should be enough to get you to buy this title, but the fact it also includes Killer's Kiss pretty much means any Kubrick fan simply has to buy it. I'm sorry, but those are the rules.
The screenplay was co-written by Kubrick with dialogue by pulp novelist Jim Thompson (though Thompson would later claim he wrote most of the film, a spat that almost ended their relationship), The Killing is based on "Clean Break" by Lionel White. The story is told using a fractured narrative, following the planning of a racetrack robbery. Throughout the film's brisk,...

It’s extremely difficult to type the words “my favorite Kubrick film” because I honestly feel I could put that down while writing about any of them. But what I can say about Stanley Kubrick’s Hollywood calling card The Killing is it’s the one film of his that I’m most nostalgic about.
Film noir. Jim Thompson’s words. Sterling Hayden’s “when men were men” bravado. The contract studio picture was on the way out and the New Hollywood of Bogdanovich, Ashby and Nichols were breaking down the doors.
But before that (and likely escalating the emergence of New Hollywood) there was Kubrick. Then 28 and coming from New York’s beatnik era having just made a twisted romance drama Killer’s Kiss (which he shot with no sound and dubbed the dialogue in post) in 1955, one year later he would team with indie producer James B. Harris...

The move from feature film to web series isn’t always a smooth jaunt through the editing bay. For writer-director Marc Clebanoff that meant a hard look at what he had in his hands—a gritty indie action flick that would also prove to be one of David Carradine’s final films. But after taking their film Break out with modest success in the saturated indie market, he and Frank Krueger (who also stars in the film), re-imagined the whole project as a serialized online release, hoping new life as a web series would draw some critical attention that passed over its previous incarnation. After months in the editing room trying to pick apart a 93-minute narrative into an episodic, the team soft-launched their new series, now called No Clean Break on KoldCast in December. And this week, with the release of their fourth episode, the pair are looking to...

Film festivals have for many years been a staple of most serious film fans’ experience. They are a great way to see a host of obscure and hard to find films and to see them gloriously displayed on the big screen. A lot of film festivals though tend to show the same old thing despite their venue and location differences. However, in Atlanta, Ga, there is a truly inspired festival called The Buried Alive Film Festival which is scheduled for November 12 & 13 at the historic Plaza Theater.
Bigger and better than ever, this year’s Buried Alive Film Festival is being sponsored by Fangoria magazine and the forthcoming American Horrors TV show and will screen five features – four of them Southeast premieres – and over 30 stunning short films from around the world.
The 2010 event also marks the first Us festival appearance of multiple award-winning British filmmaker, Ashley Thorpe, the first Southeastern appearance...
