Director and producer Tom Tykwer has become managing director of Berlin-based production company X Filme Creative Pool, best known for “Babylon Berlin,” alongside Uwe Schott. Tykwer succeeds Stefan Arndt, one of Germany’s leading producers.
The reorganization of the company’s management is intended to “sharpen the focus on the development and implementation of creative, bold and unusual material for film and television,” according to a statement.
Arndt is leaving at his own request but will remain associated with the company as a producer.
X Filme Creative Pool was founded 30 years ago by Tykwer together with the writers and directors Wolfgang Becker and Dani Levy as well as Arndt. The four founders, who remain shareholders together with Beta Film and Bogey, based themselves on United Artists with the aim of producing sophisticated films with an audience appeal – or, as Variety put it, “intelligent films that audiences want to see.”

German director Tom Tykwer has been named Managing Director of Babylon Berlin producer X Filme Creative Pool as part of a restructure that sees company co-founder Stefan Arndt step down.
The pair co-founded the German production powerhouse 30 years ago, but Tykwer will now succeed Arndt in the MD role, and joins Uwe Schott on the management team in Berlin. Arndt is exiting “at his own request” but will remain “associated” with the producer and stays on its board.
X Filme noted the restructure was “intended to sharpen the focus on the development and implementation of creative, bold and unusual material for film and television.”
“I would like to withdraw from the day-to-day business so that I can concentrate more on producing again,” said Arndt. “Some exciting projects are already in the pipeline and I’m looking forward to realising them as a freelance producer with the X Filme team.”

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.
It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.

MK2 Films, the banner behind Joachim Trier’s Oscar-nominated “The Worst Person in the World,” has boarded “Nezouh,” from Syrian director Soudade Kaadan.
The drama, set against the backdrop of the conflict in Damascus, marks Kaadan’s follow up to her 2018 feature debut, “The Day I Lost My Shadow,” which won the Lion of the Future prize at Venice. Her 2019 short “Aziza,” meanwhile, won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize.
Co-financed by BFI, which awarded National Lottery funding, and Film4, “Nezouh” is an allegorical tale of female emancipation.
The movie follows 14-year-old Zeina and her family, whose lives are shaken after a bomb rips a giant hole in the roof of their building, exposing them to the outside world. One day, a young boy living nearby lowers a rope through the opening and Zeina discovers her first taste of freedom. Whilst her father is determined to stay in his home and not become a refugee,...

It’s blockbuster season and Amazon Prime is celebrating by bringing a major action film to its stream.
That’s right, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by none other than The Tomorrow War on July 2. The year is 2051 and mankind is locked in a vicious war against an alien species. Our only hope is to go back in time and find…Chris Pratt. Ok, perhaps that’s a little reductive of the film’s plot. Future humanity also comes back to bring Sam Richardson to the future.
In terms of originals, there isn’t much else to speak of on Amazon Prime this month. The only other major release is The Pursuit of Love on July 30. This BBC series is directed by Emily Mortimer and takes place during the WWII era and follows two cousins as they navigate their lives. Lily James and Andrew Scott star.

Reef Break, the crime drama headlined by former Unforgettable and Without a Trace star Poppy Montgomery, which had a 13-episode run on ABC this past summer, will not be returning to the network.
The cancelation of the series, produced by ABC Studios International, comes on the heels of Disney Television Studios’ move to reevaluate its overseas strategy which included the shutdown of the UK-based ABC Studios International led by Keli Lee.
ABC Studios is not expected to shop Reef Break elsewhere. The series had been originally ordered by France’s M6, with ABC joining as Us distributor.
Montgomery executive produced Reef Break, which was based on her idea, along with Ken Sanzel, who was the writer/showrunner.
Reef Break was an action drama starring Montgomery as Cat Chambers, a thief-turned-fixer for the governor of a stunning and seductive Pacific Island paradise.

A couple of months ago it was revealed that Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren were teaming up for a new action series. Well, that series is called The International and CBS has ordered a pilot episode.
Stallone is set to produce and direct the hour-long drama and Lundgren will star in it. He will play Anders Soto, described as “a one-man covert black-ops team working for the U.N., who is called in to find asymmetrical solutions to the world’s most delicate and complex problems. He is part negotiator and part international spy.”
The series is being written by Ken Sanzel and it sounds like it could be a solid show. It’s always good to see Stallone and Lundgren work together.
This will be the first TV series that Stallone will have directed in his career. Hopefully, it turns out good!

With the best movie villains, you know how evil they are the moment you lay eyes on them. And that was exactly the case for Sylvester Stallone when he cast Dolph Lundgren for “Rocky IV.”
In fact he genuinely hated the guy he eventually cast to play Ivan Drago.
“He was like the real Terminator, and I go, ‘I hate this friggin’ guy,'” Stallone told Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” Friday. “He’s just too perfect, too good looking. And if I loathe him, I’m sure the world will. He’s not really, but he looks like something that’s a thousand years in the future. This is not a guy you see waiting on your table.”

Justin Kurzel is set to direct the first two episodes of Shantaram, the TV adaptation of Gregory David Roberts’ Australian novel.
Published in 2003, the novel follows Lindsay, a bank robber and heroin addict who escapes from Melbourne’s Pentridge jail and flees to India, which mirrors the author’s experience.
Landing in Bombay, he is forced to live in the slums, which shelters him from the authorities. He sets up a free health clinic as a way to contribute to the community, learns about the local culture and customs and becomes fluent in Marathi, the local language.
He also witnesses and battles outbreaks of cholera and firestorms and becomes involved in trading with the lepers.
Apple has commissioned the series which will be produced by Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Nicole Clemens and Paramount Television.

CBS has ordered action pilot The International, starring Dolph Lundgren and produced by Sylvester Stallone.
Dolph Lundgren has been putting in a lot of work with onscreen Rocky IV rival Sylvester Stallone ever since their reunion in 2010’s The Expendables, which yielded sequels and substantially improved opportunities. Indeed, this imminently-ending decade has seen a proper comeback for the ‘80s action icon; a comeback that will shift to the small screen as the star of a TV project, with Stallone involved.
The International is the newly-revealed title of said TV project, which – in the latest development – has procured an order by CBS. The move is the culmination of some solicitation after the hourlong action pilot, with Lundgren set as its star, was shopped around back in August by Tony Krantz’s Flame Ventures, reported Deadline.

Global Screen has picked up international distribution rights to spy thriller “1989 – A Spy Story,” as the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall approaches. Inspired by true events, it tells the story of a female Stasi agent, placed in the U.S. embassy in the 1980s. When the Berlin Wall comes down, she expects to be uncovered any moment, but in a cat-and-mouse-game, she tries to escape detection.
Alexandra Heidrich, head of TV sales and acquisitions at Global Screen, said the show is “fast-paced, highly atmospheric and features a top-notch cast.” She added: “Knowing that several real-life Stasi spies live unexposed among us, makes the plot all the more relevant and intriguing.”
The series is produced by Moovie, a subsidiary of Constantin Film, in co-production with Rbb and Ard Degeto, supported by Mbb and Fff Bayern. It is set for a primetime broadcast on Ard Das Erste around...

In a competitive situation, Apple has landed the rights to develop Gregory David Robert’s novel “Shantaram” as a drama series.
The 2003 novel tells the story of Lin, a man on the run from an Australian prison looking to get lost in the teeming city of Bombay. Cut off from family and friends by distance and fate, he finds a new life in the slums, bars and underworld of India. The novel has been published in 39 languages in 42 territories worldwide and sold six million copies.
There had previously been plans to develop “Shantaram” as a film. Johnny Depp had acquired the rights to the book with Warner Bros. developing it most recently. Joel Edgerton was attached to star. In January, it was announced that Anonymous Content and Paramount Television had won the rights to the book after a bidding war. The two companies have also acquired the rights to the sequel novel “The Mountain Shadow.

Ian Lagarde’s first feature All You Can Eat Buddha and Jason and Carlos Sanchez’s A Worthy Companion tied for the $15,000 cash prize presented by the Directors Guild of Canada, British Columbia and the $15,000 post-production prize sponsored by Encore Vancouver in the 14th edition of the coveted Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Feature Film. The jury states “each in their own way convey unique visions and creative storytelling the jury believes have made and will make powerful contributions to the world of cinema.”A Worthy Companion
A Worthy Companion takes a fresh and new perspective that explores the complexity and humanity within the predator, victim relationship. This film questions how we perpetuate manipulative power dynamics between adult and child through the inner struggle of our female protagonists.
