Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” had it easy this year.
He took the early lead in Gold Derby’s official Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor. He widened that lead in the following months. He then swept the precursor awards. And despite landing in a powerhouse lineup that included Sterling K. Brown in “American Fiction,” Robert De Niro in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Ryan Gosling in “Barbie” and Mark Ruffalo in “Poor Things,” there was a “near zero” chance of Downey not being called to the stage to accept the Academy Award.
But not every past recipient of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar has cruised to victory like Downey. There have been numerous nail-biters over the years.
I recall one contest in particular from three decades ago. The 1993 fabulous five included first-time nominee Leonardo DiCaprio as the autistic younger brother of Johnny Depp in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” Ralph Fiennes...

She’s stuck in hate and resentment and real loneliness. She thinks her daughter is a terrible person, she has disdain for her own child. Gary DeVore, the screenwriter of movies including Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Raw Deal and Back Roads, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field, went missing in June 1997, sparking a major manhunt.
DeVore’s mysterious disappearance has never been truly solved and there have been a number of conspiracy theories surrounding the subject including one that the CIA may have played a role in whatever happened to him.
This story is the subject of Witnessed: Fade to Black, an eight-part podcast from Campside Media and Sony Music Entertainment, in association with Stowaway Entertainment, which premieres its season finale next week. There’s also been an interesting revelation since the show debuted; Gary’s wife Wendy DeVore recently discovered over 50 scripts and treatments, written by DeVore, and Wendy and Stowaway’s Jeff Singer are now working to see if there’s a second life for these scripts.

If you ever happen across Tommy Lee Jones in a public setting, should you find yourself sharing an elevator with him or spot him across the room in a restaurant, do yourself a favor and leave him be. If you're at all adept at reading body language, you should realize fairly quickly that the man is a walking "do not disturb" sign. Should you try to engage, know that he will swiftly and bluntly shut you down. Whatever bond you feel you've formed with Jones, it doesn't extend beyond the movie theater or your television screen. Not for him.
If you ever get the opportunity to interview Tommy Lee Jones, prepare. Do your research, write your very specific questions down well in advance and do not deviate. If you ask good, thoughtful questions, you'll get a good interview. Do not try to have a conversation. If your inquiries ramble or,...

With each new project, Alex Pettyfer has been moving further from his early days in Hollywood as a teen heartthrob. With last year's The Strange Ones (review), and The Last Witness earlier this year, he has re-emerged as a more mature performer and Back Roads presents yet another side to the actor: director.
Adapted from Tawni O'Dell's best-selling novel of the same name by O'Dell herself and acclaimed writer/director Adrian Lyne, Back Roads stars Pettyfer as Harley Altmyer, a young 20-something who has been left to care for his three younger sisters after his mother is convicted of murderi...

When an actor who’s been packaged as a sexy mainstream star hops off the commercial train to direct a small independent feature, one that takes on a topic as raw as child sexual abuse, you can presume that the movie in question is a passion project. But it can also be a calculated image-changer. “Back Roads,” directed by the rising British actor Alex Pettyfer, who also stars in it, may be a bit of both. The film is based on Tawni Odell’s 1999 novel, which is set in backwoods Western Pennsylvania, and it’s about a family so fractured that it’s become a hornets’ nest of rage, misery, and dysfunction.
Pettyfer plays Harley, who’s been taking care of his three younger sisters for two years — ever since their mother, Bonnie (Juliette Lewis), was sent to prison for killing their father. The father was a violent abuser, so...

The dysfunctional family plot of “Back Roads,” which marks the directorial debut of actor Alex Pettyfer, is so twisted that every 10 minutes or so there is a new revelation meant to shock the audience, and this presumably goes back to Tawni O’Dell’s novel, on which the film is based.
The way this story is told also might have something to do with the participation of Adrian Lyne, who co-wrote the script with O’Dell. This is Lyne’s first film credit since the drama “Unfaithful” in 2002, and the particular emphasis on sex feels like it is his handiwork, so to speak.
Pettyfer also stars as Harley, a young man who has had to take responsibility for raising his three sisters after his mother (Juliette Lewis) was put in jail for murdering their father. This information is relayed to us in a slightly awkward title card at the beginning of the film.

Alex Pettyfer’s compelling directorial debut Back Roads premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, a decade after Pettyfer had auditioned for Adrian Lyne’s unsuccessful attempt to bring the same Tawni O’Dell novel to the screen.
Pettyfer’s tenacity as a producer saw the film finally being made with him taking on both directing and lead actor duties. Set in rural Pennsylvania, Pettyfer plays Harley, a young man who is forced to take care of his three younger sisters, including rebellious teenager Amber (Nicola Peltz), when his mother (Juliette Lewis) is sent to prison for killing his abusive father. Things are further complicated when Harley begins a relationship with an older married woman, Callie (Jennifer Morrison).

As she said when she collected her second Oscar for Best Actress, Sally Field hasn’t had an orthodox career. Plucked out of a drama class when she was barely out of high school Field was cast as the perky surfer girl Gidget for one season on TV. She then did three seasons in the preposterous series “The Flying Nun.” Not exactly the kind of work that would portend a serious new actress had arrived. In fact at the age of 24, Field found herself to be somewhat of an industry joke.
While many sitcom stars who fell into obscurity, Field managed to turn her career around. She began working with famed acting teacher Lee Strasberg and slowly things started to change for her. "So twisted. Full of secrets." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the first official trailer for an indie noir thriller titled Back Roads, which first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Back Roads is also the directorial debut of English actor Alex Pettyfer, who also stars in the film as a young man stuck in the Pennsylvania backwoods caring for his three younger sisters after the death of his abusive father and the arrest of his mother. When he strikes up an affair with a local married woman, long-dormant family secrets bubble to the surface in this "back roads" thriller. The film's full cast includes Jennifer Morrison, Nicola Peltz, Chiara Aurelia, Hala Finley, June Carryl, Robert Patrick, with Juliette Lewis. This looks like a gritty, sweaty backwoods noir film for sure - and I'll admit that it doesn't seem so bad. Worth a watch. Here's the first official...

From the get-go, Alex Pettyfer appeared to be more than just a teen heartthrob and though he went through a rough patch after the release of Magic Mike the actor has, particularly over the last few years, emerged as an artist determined to shape his career in his own way. For his debut as a director, Pettyfer has chosen to direct an adaptation of Tawni O'Dell's best selling novel.

I’m a big fan of Robert Patrick, who is best know for his roles in Terminator 2 and The X-Files, so it’s great to see him join Steven Soderbergh’s new film project The Laundromat.

Chicago – For a first book author, there is probably no greater literary blessing than their work becoming a “Oprah’s Book Club” selection. Tawni O’Dell experienced that honor in 2000, for her novel “Back Roads.” Fast forward years later, and O’Dell adapted that novel – with Adrian Lyne – into a screenplay that became the film “Back Roads,” which screened at the 17th Tribeca Film Festival on April 20th, 2018.

Actor Alex Pettyfer makes his directorial debut with a melodrama that was actually co-written (with Tawni O’Dell) by Fatal Attraction helmer Adrian Lyne. As you might guess, then, there is little nuance in the characters of this movie set against the backdrop of child abuse in small town Appalachia. Pettyfear is a youngish man who must manage the remnants of a household following the killing of their father by their now imprisoned mother. His three younger female siblings are of various ages, all harboring dark secrets with Gothic novel overtones. The filmmaker has given himself the Herculean tasks […]

Alex Pettyfer, probably best known to audiences as “The Kid” in Magic Mike, always aspired to be more than just a thirst trap. In many ways, he might be too handsome for his own good. Pettyfer has been on the cusp of “happening” for a decade since landing the lead role in the Alex Rider […]

Alex Pettyfer has a conspiratorial glint in his eye. He wants to conduct our interview in the empty screening room of the Crosby Hotel instead of its basement bar.
“It’ll be cool,” he promises, without a trace of anxiety about the fact that the theater looks very much closed to the public.
Pettyfer, outfitted in a baseball cap and a tight-fitting t-shirt that reveals an elaborate series of arm tattoos, is in New York to show “Back Roads,” a moody drama that marks his directorial debut, at the Tribeca Film Festival. He produced the film, as well as stars in it as Harley, a young man struggling to hold his impoverished family together after his mother (Juliette Lewis) is jailed for killing his father.
“The most humble experience I’ve ever had was making ‘Back Roads,’ because I realized as an actor you’re on a solo journey,” said Pettyfer.

Long dreaming of stepping behind the camera, actor Alex Pettyfer made his directorial debut recently with the Tribeca-premiering Back Roads, in which he also stars.
Based on a novel by Tawni O’Dell, Back Roads centers on Harley (Pettyfer), a young man living in backwoods Pennsylvania, who is forced to become the caretaker for his three sisters after his father is murdered and his mother (Juliette Lewis) is sent to prison.
Reading the script for the project years ago—when he was 18 years old—Pettyfer never consciously set out to make Back Roads his first directorial outing, only coming back to the project years later when he realized that it had never been made. “I approached Michael Ohoven, one of the producers, about ten years later, and it was just my pure love for the story and wanting to see it get made,” Pettyfer told Deadline yesterday, explaining his ultimate...

We’re now into 11 years since Adrian Lyne released a film with 2002’s Unfaithful. He’s been contemplating a family drama with Back Roads and is also attached to John Grisham adaptation The Associate. Yet his attention has been caught by the chance to bring a Patricia Highsmith thriller to the screen, and he’s now made a deal to direct Deep Water. Zach Helm has adapted and modernised the story of Vic and Melinda, a young, beautiful married couple who like to play sexy mind games with each other to keep their relationship interesting. But then, in true Highsmith style, people start turning up dead.According to Deadline, talks are under way with a big name to star, but that might impact when Water gets flowing, as scheduling could become an issue. There’s a chance it’ll have to wait until Lyne finishes either Back Roads or The Associate,...

Twitter was abuzz this morning with an old Kristen Stewart casting rumor (that I mistakenly thought was new): that she’s been offered a role in the upcoming Adrian Lyne-helmed film, Back Roads. Chloe Moretz is apparently attached to star in a yet unannounced role in the thriller, which follows a young man who must take care of his siblings after his father is arrested for killing his mom. He falls in love with a married neighbor, and then must battle criminal charges himself. It’s an intriguing storyline, and Lyne is an esteemed director whose credits include Unfaithful, Fatal Attraction, and – god bless him – Footloose.
Sure, it’s just a rumor, but it’s an exciting one in the wake of Kristen’s admittance to MTV News that she currently has no new projects on the horizon and is “in a good place to choose.” She dropped...

Adrian Lyne's long-gestating film adaptation of Tawni O’Dell's novel "Back Roads" has found financing says The Hollywood Reporter.
Set in Pennsylvania’s mining country, the story follows a 20-year-old man who has to care for his three sisters after his mother is convicted of killing his abusive father.
He commences an affair with a married mother of two and becomes the prime suspect in a murder. Andrew Garfield was previously attached to star but that fell apart a while back due to scheduling issues.
Rcr Media Group is backing the steamy thriller which "Fatal Attraction" and "Indecent Proposal" helmer Lyne will direct, marking his first film since 2002's "Unfaithful". Lyne's been attached to numerous projects over the years including "Two Minutes to Midnight," "Prince of Thieves", and last month he was linked to John Grisham's legal thriller "The Associate".

I spent this afternoon visiting Adrian Lyne‘s 9 1/2 Weeks (which I’d never seen before), so I suppose it’s only natural that casting news should now surface on the director’s first project since 2002′s Unfaithful. We’d previously speculated that Lyne would be following up his Richard Gere-Diane Lane romantic stinger by adapting John Grisham‘s The Associate, but this up-to-date Moviehole report suggests a very different novel-to-film undertaking — that of Tawni O’Dell‘s best-selling Back Roads, which he was rumored to take on in February of 2011.
The report speculates furthermore about the potential casting choices on Lynn‘s adaptation. Chloë Moretz — who’s currently on screens worldwide in Tim Burton‘s trivial Dark Shadows — is thought to already be on board with the project, while Kristen Stewart — who will soon appear in On the Road — has merely been offered an unspecified part.

This year marks a decade since Adrian Lyne last released a movie (that would be Diane Lane / Richard Gere / Olivier Martinez bonk triangle Unfaithful), but it hasn’t been for want of tying. He’s developed projects here and there through the years, but nothing has seemed to come of them until recently. And now he’s circling a likely prospect with John Grisham adaptation The Associate for Paramount. The legal drama, which finds a Yale graduate coerced into taking a job with a big law firm after he learns crucial information about a big case, has had its own stumbles on the road to the screen. Back in 2008, Shia Labeouf was attached to star as the main character, with Tony Scott showing interest in 2010, attracted by a script from William Monahan. But the deals never quite worked out.Enter Lyne, for whom “briefs” in a film usually means underwear and the shedding thereof.

Adrian Lyne May Return With John Grisham Adaptation ‘The Associate’; Andrew Garfield Wanted for Lead
Coming right after Mark Wahlberg‘s multi-hyphenated interest in The Partner, Variety has me thinking John Grisham‘s suddenly back in style. According to them, Adrian Lyne (Jacob’s Ladder, Fatal Attraction) may end his nearly ten-year retirement by adapting his novel, The Associate, with a script by William Monahan there to guide him along.
I could make a joke about the story centering on a lawyer, but we’re not going to poke fun at Michael Bay for making expensive action films, either. (Actually…) As it were, The Associate tells the story of “a recent Yale grad coerced into taking a job with a prestige firm after he’s given information about a multi-billion-dollar case.” When we first reported on the film, back in August of 2010, Shia Labeouf and Tony Scott were the prospective star and director, respectively, and the story was said to follow “a young lawyer thrust...
