Sugar is based on a screenplay co-written by American film makers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who also co-directed the movie.
Sugar is a fictional story, taken from Boden and Fleck's research into immigrants from the Dominican republic who come to America to play in the minor leagues, hoping to make it big.
The Dominican Republic is a nation on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea. The Dominican Republic shares the island with Haiti to the west. Hispaniola lies south of the Bahamas, east of Cuba and Jamaica, and west of Puerto Rico.
