Frank Grillo, who played a tough villain in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is asking Marvel’s co-president, Louis D’Esposito, for a favor. This post contains spoilers for "The Purge" franchise.
2013's "The Purge" introduced an intriguing premise: in a near-future dystopia, all crime is legal for 12 hours once a year, allowing people to indulge in their most violent instincts. Written and directed by James DeMonaco, "The Purge" takes the home-invasion route, where a wealthy family unit finds themselves cornered by a bloodthirsty group of murderers itching to commit crimes without any consequences. The overwhelming success enjoyed by the film contributed to the making of an expanding franchise, with later entries retaining this core concept while introducing new socio-political facets to enliven their narratives.
While it is perfectly acceptable to watch the "Purge" franchise by the order of release date, following this format introduces some chronological issues, as later entries serve as prequels or expand the universe with some ties to the film franchise. Although we will be focusing exclusively on the movies,...

‘Tis the season for holiday films. This year, Susie Abromeit is stepping into the spirit playing an interior designer tasked with a career-changing assignment — a Christmas charity ball — that requires working with a difficult, but handsome, stranger.
Designing Christmas With You is the latest project from Abromeit’s four-picture deal with Great American Family, which was announced in the fall of 2021. She produces and stars alongside Liam McIntyre.
The actress, who had a breakout role in Jessica Jones, has done a string of rom-coms for the network following appearances in King Richard and The Forever Purge. What’s different about a holiday film? Mostly, the snow.
“It was really well-made soap that looked like snow,” Abromeit notes. “The Christmas aspect is always dialed up. It’s all about the hot cocoa, the trees and the decorations, good feelings, the nostalgia.”
Ahead of the movie’s Dec. 16 release, Abromeit spoke with...

The latest film, The Forever Purge, was originally billed as the final story in the series. It ended with the United States of America locked in a never-ending Purge and its protagonists just barely escaped to Mexico.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Tenoch Huerta has denied a sexual assault accusation by musician and activist María Elena Ríos.
Over the weekend, Ríos posted a series of tweets calling Huerta a “violator” and “sexual predator” while accusing him of sexually assaulting her. “It’s very difficult to talk about the emotional abuse and the abuse of power of a sexual predator who is loved around the world for playing a character in a movie such as Tenoch Huerta,” she wrote.
In a statement released on Monday, Huerta called the allegation “false and completely unsubstantiated,” and claimed that he and Ríos had an “entirely consensual” relationship that lasted “several months.”
“About a year ago, I dated Elena for several months,” Huerta said. “Throughout it was a loving, warm and mutually supportive relationship. After it ended, however, Elena began to misrepresent our interactions both privately and in front of groups of mutual friends.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” actor Tenoch Huerta released a statement on Instagram on Monday denying the accusations of sexual assault made against him by Mexican musician and activist María Elena Ríos, with whom he had a relationship for several months.
Ríos made the accusations after Poder Prieto, an anti-racism collective of actors and entertainment workers of which Huerta is a member, shared an episode of a podcast Ríos appeared on.
Ríos, a former member of Poder Prieto, accused the organization of making her work for free without compensating her and protecting Huerta, whom she called a “sexual predator” and responded in the affirmative when asked by another Twitter user if Huerta assaulted her. The Forever Purge had been marketed as the franchise’s *final* movie, but creator James DeMonaco eventually walked back those statements with the suggestion that he may actually have one more Purge story in the tank. The plan, last we heard? To bring Frank Grillo back as Leo Barnes, his character from The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year.
“I think I’m going to write the next one, and if the audience wants it, we’ll do it,” DeMonaco told Daily Dead back in 2021. “Again, I think I came up with a new way to flip the whole thing upside down, and it’ll be five years after [The Forever Purge], but it takes America in a whole new direction and I think it would be a very interesting place to explore.”
DeMonaco explains to Variety in a new update this week that he finished the script “about eight months ago.

'The Purge 6' script has already been written.Franchise creator James DeMonaco has finished the script for the upcoming sixth instalment in the horror franchise - which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year - as Frank Grillo returns as Leo Barnes, while the movie will see how life continues after the collapse of the United States.Revealing he wrote the script eight months ago, DeMonaco told Variety: "It’s not completely different than previous movies, but it’s a new America that we’re entering into.“In ‘The Forever Purge,’ America kind of collapsed, and it’s really kind of mapped itself according to different ideologies. The states are based on sexuality, religion and ideology."So we’ve broken apart and the state of discord is at its worst. We enter 'The Purge' in that world.”The franchise has sparked five movies and a two-season TV series thus far,...

Almost two years have gone by since Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco let it be known that he had an idea for The Purge 6 that would get him back into the director’s chair (after handing The First Purge and The Forever Purge over to other directors) and see Frank Grillo reprising the role of Leo Barnes, the character he played in The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year. But as time goes by, it was seeming less likely that this sixth Purge movie was going to happen. Earlier this year, Grillo indicated the shot-callers at Universal and Blumhouse weren’t sure they were going to move forward with this one. But in a new interview with Variety, DeMonaco seems confident that The Purge 6 is going to happen.
Today, June 7th, actually marks the tenth anniversary of the release of The Purge, which is why Variety got in contact with DeMonaco.

Over five low-budget box office hits and a two-season TV series, “The Purge” saga — which portrays a not-too-distant-future America where all crimes, including murder, are legal for one night a year in order to satiate a bloodthirsty public — swelled into a $450 million franchise. But the first chapter was almost never made.
While the film became the defining hit of writer and director James DeMonaco’s career, he says the script was passed over “40-50 times” for being seen as “too anti-American.”
“I had this little, strange, dark indictment of American gun culture,” he said. “I hate guns. To me, the scariest thing in the world would be a night where everyone was armed and it was legal to use these firearms. To me, there was nothing scarier than that notion.”
Ultimately, the film got the attention of super-producer Jason Blum, who “saw something bigger in the conceit,” said DeMonaco. Soon,...

It has long been the strict modus operandi of Blumhouse -- the celebrated horror studio behind low-budget hits like "Insidious," "The Purge," "Paranormal Activity," and "The Black Phone" -- to keep their film budgets in the $3 million to $5 million range. At a 2015 producer's panel, studio founder Jason Blum explained that those figures reflect what the studio could recoup, should a film fail to get a wide release. If the film isn't picked up, he explained, the studio at least doesn't lose much. If it is, the studio will continue to be in the black.
In recent years, Blum's budgets have increased slightly. The 2020 film "Freaky" ran a price tag of $6 million, and "The Invisible Man" was $7 million. In recent years, Blum's budgets have increased slightly. The 2020 film "Freaky" ran a price tag of $6 million, and "The Invisible Man" was $7 million. Back in 2018, Steve Alten’s The Meg finally came to the big screen, but not in the form that we had originally been promised. The big screen Megalodon horror movie was released with a PG-13 rating – much to the chagrin of star Jason Statham – leaving fans hungry for a shark attack movie with a bit more bite. And it looks like we’re getting one this year.

Last year’s The Forever Purge had been marketed as the franchise’s *final* movie, but creator James DeMonaco eventually walked back those statements with the suggestion that he may actually have one more Purge story in the tank. The plan? To bring Frank Grillo back as Leo Barnes, his character from The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year.
“I think I’m going to write the next one, and if the audience wants it, we’ll do it,” DeMonaco told Daily Dead last summer. “Again, I think I came up with a new way to flip the whole thing upside down, and it’ll be five years after [The Forever Purge], but it takes America in a whole new direction and I think it would be a very interesting place to explore.”
So what’s the latest on all that? Frank Grillo provides a fresh update to Empire Magazine in their February 2023 issue,...

The Forever Purge (pick up a copy Here), the fifth film in the Purge franchise, was said to be the final chapter in the series when it was first announced… but while doing press for the film last year, Purge creator James DeMonaco revealed that he had come up with an idea for one more sequel. One that would see Frank Grillo reprising the role of Leo Barnes from The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year. Then Grillo confirmed that he and DeMonaco were “committed” to making The Purge 6 together. A year and a half later, it doesn’t look like Universal has officially given the project a greenlight yet, but during an interview with Empire magazine (with thanks to Screen Rant for sharing the excerpt), Grillo said that he and DeMonaco are still working on pushing The Purge 6 forward toward production.

The Purge franchise premiered its first uniquely premised film in 2013, titled The Purge. For those unaware of the six-film deep franchise, The Purge franchise showcases the one night of the year when all crime is legal in an alternate political world, also titled The Purge. From the first film’s release in 2013, a new film was released every two years or so, but no less often than at least once every three years. The Purge films exclusively carried on The Purge franchise until after 2018’s The First Purge when, in the same year, The Purge television series premiered. Since

Ten months have gone by since we saw a first look image from Rambo: Last Blood (watch the extended cut of that Here) director Adrian Grunberg‘s shark thriller The Black Demon – and that was actually the last time we heard anything about the movie, so I had forgotten about it. Thankfully, our friends at Bloody Disgusting were able to dig up the information that The Black Demon has a theatrical release date of April 21, 2023. Which will, unfortunately, put it in direct competition with the new Evil Dead movie, Evil Dead Rise.
Evil Dead Rise was originally going to be an HBO Max release, but it went over so well with test screening audiences that the decision was made to send it to theatres. So now it’s on a collision course with The Black Demon. Bloody Disgusting was also able to find out that The Black Demon will be...

After months of tepid to lukewarm box office showings, Marvel Studios releases its third feature film of 2022 this weekend: “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” It might be an even bigger and more important release for Marvel and Disney than the sequels “Dr. Strange into the Multiverse of Madness” and “Thor: Love and Thunder” earlier in the year.
The big onus hanging over the Ryan Coogler-directed sequel is the 2020 death of Chadwick Boseman, who played the titular “Black Panther” in the 2018 hit that won three Oscars after becoming the fifth (now sixth) highest-grossing movie of all time. “Wakanda Forever” does deal with the absence of Boseman’s T’Challa, but Coogler wisely put more focus on some of the other returning cast/characters, including Letitia Wright’s Shuri, Angela Bassett’s Queen Ramonda, Danai Gurira’s Okoye and Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia – basically, the women of Wakanda.

In Ryan Coogler's upcoming superhero movie "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," the title country will see itself invaded by a species of undersea humanoids led by their king, Namor. Also known as the Sub-Mariner in Marvel comics, Namor may be the highest-profile superhero character to have yet to appear in a live-action feature film. Throughout the character's history, Namor has functioned as both hero and villain, sometimes using his powers of flight and super strength to help the Fantastic Four, but just as often harming humanity for their role in polluting the seas. In the comics, the character is sternly principled and doesn't suffer fools gladly.
Namor will be played by Tenoch Huerta, the Mexican actor who previously appeared in dozens of Mexican features including "Sin Nombre," and "Tigers Are Not Afraid," as well as a few American films like "The Forever Purge." He also played the famed real-life luchador Blue Demon,...

When Marvel Studios’ Black Panther released in 2018, it redefined superhero films in many ways. Apart from introducing a completely new world and culture through the film, the creators also left a mark through its powerful, and much loved villain. While the first film had Michael B Jordan’s skillfully clever antagonist Erik ‘Killmonger’ Stevens, the upcoming sequel takes its villain-game a notch higher. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will see the Marvel legend Namor as Wakanda’s new adversary, with a completely new water world ready for fans to explore.
Playing the role of this dynamic nemesis is Mexican actor Lenoch Huerta (‘The Forever Purge’ and ‘Tigers Are Not Afraid’) who opens up about his much anticipated Namor’s character who rules over Talocan instead of Atlantis. Namor has resurfaced to cause chaos after T’Challa signed off the first film by revealing Wakanda to the world.

Of the many positive trends “Get Out” ushered forth — the highbrow-ification of horror, irrefutable proof that Black stories can rock the box office — there’s also been a proliferation of socially conscious horror with somewhat mixed results. Studios began to shove political commentary into every horror movie, whether it was “The Forever Purge” pitting Mexican immigrants against gun-toting Maga gangs, or the latest “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” turning Leatherface into a displaced victim of tech gentrification. Horror fans can sense when films force satire into a bloodbath and it’s annoying: They’re being sold a market trend and usually all they want is good clean bloody fun.
Leading that charge is Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Prods., the prolific banner behind some of the most successful horror franchises of the last decade, including “Paranormal Activity” and “The Purge” as well as “Get Out” and “Us.” But in its rapid expansion, Blumhouse...

Exclusive: Josh Lucas is set to star opposite Kristen Wiig in Apple TV+ comedy series Mrs. American Pie, executive produced by Laura Dern. Based on Juliet McDaniel’s book, Mrs. American Pie hails from creator Abe Sylvia (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and director Tate Taylor (Breaking News in Yuba County). Dern also is eyeing a “key role” in the series.
Written by Sylvia and directed by Taylor, Mrs. American Pie is set during the powderkeg era of the early 1970s and follows Maxine Simmons (Wiig) and her attempt to secure her seat at America’s most exclusive table: Palm Beach high society.
