Series creators Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg had originally conceived of "Undone" as a live-action series, before realizing that rotoscope animation gave them the ability to stretch reality in a way that wouldn't feel like the more magical, abstract sequences were breaking the grounded tone of the show.
Rosa Salazar has said that being a naturally emotional person helped her embody the role of 'Alma.'
The idea to use rotoscoped animation for "Undone" came from series' animation director Hisko Hulsing, who convinced Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg that rotoscoping allowed the characters to be more expressive than traditional animation, which he felt was necessary for a story as adult and dramatic as this one.
Series creator Kate Purdy grew up in San Antonio, where "Undone" takes place.
The process of creating "Undone" stretched across three different cities on two separate continents spanning between Los Angeles, Austin, and Amsterdam.
