A quartet of fast-rising British names are coming together for a buzzy new project launching at the Cannes market.
Bella Ramsey, Louis Partridge and Ruby Stokes are set to lead Sunny Dancer, the sophomore feature from George Jaques. Embankment Films is handling global pre-sales of the film, which it says showcases the “best of new British talent.”
“Sunny Dancer” follows Ivy (Ramsey), a teenager in remission from cancer, whose gloriously outspoken mum and well-intentioned dad insist she attend Children Run Free Camp, a summer retreat for young adults affected by cancer. The camp’s slogan, “Where kids come to kid,” does little to alleviate Ivy’s apprehension, and a quick Google search confirms her fears when she stumbles upon a cringeworthy promotional video filled with tacky messages and clichéd sunsets. As if conquering cancer wasn’t enough of a challenge, Ivy now faces the prospect of spending her summer at what she calls “chemo camp.

Back in 2009, a horror film called Orphan told us the story of a married couple who adopts a 9-year-old Russian girl only to discover that she’s actually a criminal adult passing herself off as a child. The film was loosely based on the true story of Barbora Skrlova, a 30-something woman who pretended to be a 13-year-old and did some very twisted things that were very different than what we saw in Orphan. In 2012, a sad case that made it into news reports reminded people of Orphan. It was the story of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born girl with dwarfism who was adopted by American parents who began to suspect she was much older than records said she was. The Grace case has been covered on Dr. Phil and the docu-series The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, and now the Hulu streaming service is moving forward with a Natalia Grace-inspired...

In a follow-up post, the writer clarified that Season 2 is still in preproduction, and writing will resume on the HBO drama series.

HBO’s adaptation of “The Last of Us” scratched the surface on the video-game franchise’s massive world – which will continue to unfold when the drama series eventually returns for its second season.
But outside of Joel and Ellie’s main narrative, which co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have previously said could span across multiple seasons, the pair have not had discussions about the potential for spin-offs that could further expand on the world’s other characters.
“We haven’t talked about that specifically because we’re so focused on just telling this main narrative. I’m not against the idea of other shows that may draw from these characters or that world,” Mazin told TheWrap in an interview in accordance with WGA guidelines and facilitated through his personal publicist. “I don’t know how much more ‘The Last of Us’ I personally would be able to do. Opening in March 2022, the production has sold over 200,000 tickets. By the time it closes, the show will be the longest running mask show that the company has presented in London.
Over 600 people have worked on the show, making it the largest project in Punchdrunk’s history. The epic retelling of the end of the Trojan war, set between the neon-drenched backstreets of downtown Troy and the menacing but opulent shadow of Greece, is played out across two vast warehouse buildings. Part of the old Woolwich Arsenal, these buildings provide Punchdrunk with its first permanent home in London.

In December 2022, the critically acclaimed, mega-successful stage musical based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book Matilda came to cinemas translated into a punchy, inventive feature film. Written by playwright and screenwriter Dennis Kelly with songs and lyrics by comedian and writer Tim Minchin (Upright), the musical – like the book – is a terrific blend of poignancy and rebellious satire.
Famously adapted for a 1996 American feature film starring writer Mara Wilson in the title role, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary young girl born into a neglectful family who are unable to see, or appreciate her uniqueness. Matilda Wormwood isn’t just an academic genius, and when she goes up against the cruel, child-hating headmistress Miss Trunchbull, she uses her powers to right a generational wrong.
The new film retains the original musical’s anarchic heart, chiefly by retaining its director Matthew Warchus, who pulled the whole thing together...

After rave reviews from critics and fans alike and strong viewership for its initial episodes, HBO’s live-action television adaptation of “The Last of Us” has scored a renewal for a second season. But while fans of the video games might assume Season 2 would adapt “The Last of Us: Part II” and that would be the end of the story, showrunner Craig Mazin says there’s potentially more than two seasons worth of story in the complete “Last of Us” saga on HBO.

In 2013, people lost their minds over the first 20 minutes of NaughtyDog's post-apocalyptic epic, "The Last Of Us" — and believe it or not, that reaction had nothing to do with a zombie infection turning humanity into ravenous, parasitic puppets. See, by the time folks finally got their hands on the disc, the game had drummed up plenty of hype, including lots of breathless praise from critics. People assumed they had a solid grasp of what they were in for.
Every single poster, trailer, and piece of marketing had made the premise pretty clear: "The Last Of Us" was the story of a hardened apocalypse survivor battling against the odds to protect a young girl from harm. So when the game kicks off with players assuming the role of Sarah, a 12-year-old who witnesses the collapse of society, it's all too easy to assume she's the girl that Joel will spend the game protecting.

In a reversal of the usual exec moves from British networks to streamers, the BBC has hired Netflix’s scripted executive Lindsay Salt to serve as its director of drama, a position considered one of the most prestigious and influential in British TV.
Salt replaces Piers Wenger, who left earlier this year to join A24 as part of its major international push.
Having been at Netflix since 2019 where she was part of the first U.K. scripted team and established the new slate with Anne Mensah, Salt’s commissions included Baby Reindeer, One Day, The Fuck it Bucket, Palomino and Half Bad. She also worked across shows including Heartstopper and The Crown season five.

The BBC has poached well-respected scripted executive Lindsay Salt from Netflix, to serve as the public broadcaster’s new director of drama — one of the most high-profile jobs in British television.
Salt — who commissioned Netflix shows such as the forthcoming “One Day” and “Half Bad” — replaces Piers Wenger, who left the BBC to oversee the international film and TV slate for Hollywood indie studio A24 alongside BBC Films boss Rose Garnett.
Salt’s hire is a major coup for the BBC and marks an especially rare occasion where a U.K. public broadcaster has lured away streaming talent. The current generally flows the other way, with Netflix having snapped up BBC drama executive Mona Qureshi to join its scripted series team earlier this year.
Salt, who worked closely with Anne Mensah at Netflix, will report directly to Charlotte Moore, chief content officer at the BBC, and lead the drama commissioning team.

This review of “Dashcam” was first published Sept. 11, 2021, after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In the future, when we look back at the cinema from the Covid epidemic, there will be a special place reserved for Rob Savage’s “Host.” The supernatural thriller, conceived and produced and released during lockdown, told the story of a seance performed over a friendly Zoom call, and how one person’s irresponsibility doomed everyone they knew. “Host” keyed into the most contemporary anxieties imaginable and it did so with class, cleverness, and aplomb. It was one of the best films of 2020.
Savage is back one year later with a new Covid nightmare called “Dashcam,” a film that also takes place entirely on a digital screen — the protagonist’s phone — and also takes place smack dab in the middle of the pandemic. But this time, the protagonist, a version of Giant Drag...

Disney+ has released the teaser trailer for “Willow,” the Lucasfilm and Imagine Entertainment series that serves as a sequel to the 1988 fantasy film of the same name.
The company revealed the first look footage during its Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim, with star Warwick Davis, creator Jonathan Kasdan, the original film’s director Ron Howard, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and some of the series’ cast on hand.
“It’s a dream to return to this character,” Davis said onstage. “Making this movie was one of the best experiences of my life.”
Davis’ Willow narrates much of the teaser, reintroducing viewers to the mystical world of the original film.
“There is a balance between all things — light and shadow, good and evil,” Willow says. “When that balance is upset, the universe corrects. … Into the unknown, that’s where we must go.”
