Johnny Wactor, an actor best known for his role as Brando Corbin in “General Hospital,” was shot and killed during a suspected catalytic converter theft attempt in downtown L.A. on Saturday morning. He was 37.
Wactor’s talent agent David Shaul confirmed the actor’s death to Variety on Sunday.
“Johnny Wactor was a spectacular human being. Not just a talented actor who was committed to his craft but a real moral example to everyone who knew him. Standing for hard work, tenacity and a never give up attitude. In the highs and lows of a challenging profession he always kept his chin up and kept striving for the best he could be,” Shaul said in a statement. “Our time with Johnny was a privilege we would wish on everyone. He would literally give you the shirt off his back. After over a decade together, he will leave a hole in our hearts forever.

As Alec Baldwin’s legal challenges continue with Friday’s indictment stemming from the 2021 Rust shooting, he has made moves to shore up his finances, which includes the star starting to appear at fan conventions and having relisted his longtime Hamptons home for $10 million under the asking price from roughly a year ago.
In a video posted this week by real estate brokerage firm Saunders & Associates, Baldwin talks to the camera about his fond memories with the 10,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom home located in Amagansett on Long Island’s South Shore. The 30 Rock alum’s abode is now on the market for $19 million after he previously listed it for $29 million. The original listing was in September 2022, less than a year after a firearm handled by Baldwin on the New Mexico set of indie Western Rust was discharged on Oct. 21, 2021, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

At the back end of 2022 it was announced that the 1996 hit Twister would be getting a sequel in 2024. So it should perhaps come as no surprise that similar movies are starting to release in 2023. Supercell would be one of those movies.
The start of the movie shows a young couple storm chasing, while it is made clear that they are doing this for scientific reasons, and not just as thrill-seekers. Unfortunately, the male of the couple ends up dying when he gets too close to a tornado and we shoot forward a number of years to his now grown-up, son and his mother. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s new record PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation is finally here. Stream it below.
King Gizzard clocked back into somewhat familiar instrumentation with PetroDragonic Apocalypse, which marks their 24th studio album. Self-described as “heavy as fuck,” the new record harks back to 2019’s Infest the Rat’s Nest by diving into the metal pools of experimentally hard-hitting riffs and songs about witches and wizards. They teased the album with lead single “Gila Monster.”
PetroDragonic Apocalypse arrives an unusually long time after King Gizzard’s most recent LP Changes; that one was released last October, just weeks after their back-to-back albums Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava and Laminated Denim.
King Gizzard will be playing some of their classics and highlights from PetroDragonic Apocalypse during their three Carnation Farm dates in Washington,...

Earlier this month, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard announced a new album called PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation. Now, they’ve shared more details about the project, due out June 16th, and revealed its first single, “Gila Monster.”
To give you an idea of its meandering quality, PetroDragonic Apocalypse is a seven-track double album. Thematically, it’s about “humankind and it’s about planet Earth but it’s also about witches and dragons and shit,” as King Gizzard leader Stu Mackenzie puts it, while sonically, it recalls the thrash metal of 2019 fan favorite Infest The Rats’ Nest.
“When we made Rats’ Nest, it felt experimental,” Mackenzie said. “Like, ‘Here’s this music that some of us grew up on but we’d never had the guts or confidence to really play before, so let’s give...

As he weathers his own personal storm over Rust, Alec Baldwin’s disaster film Supercell hit video-on-demand and opened in a smattering of independent cinemas with little fanfare over the March 17-19 weekend. A star like Baldwin can be a distributor’s biggest asset in the cash-strapped indie world where marketing money quickly evaporates. In this case, however, Baldwin has not done any press for the film (he did post about it on Instagram).
The Twister-esque film is noteworthy in that it marks a prior collaboration between Baldwin and several producers that later went on to make Rust, where Baldwin accidentally discharged a prop gun that ultimately killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, igniting widespread conversations around set safety and indie film business practices. Baldwin faces an involuntary manslaughter charge due to his involvement in the fatal shooting. (Baldwin has pleaded not guilty.)

Alec Baldwin is proving his VOD bankability is not rusty one bit.
Baldwin’s latest film “Supercell” debuted in the top 10 on iTunes, marking the actor’s first movie released since the fatal October 2021 shooting on the “Rust” set. Baldwin is currently facing manslaughter charges in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. “Rust” producer Anjul Nigam and actor Baldwin’s production banner Persona Entertainment is also behind “Supercell,” with Nigam credited as an executive producer.
“Supercell” only grossed under $8,000 in theaters since its March 17 day-and-date release on VOD. Directed by Herbert James Winterstern from a script co-written by Anna Elizabeth James, “Supercell” follows a teenage boy (Daniel Diemer) who tries to save his storm-chasing father’s legacy from a corrupt local tourism business. Baldwin portrays the film’s profit-hungry villain, Zane Rogers.

This week in home viewing, the whale topped a bear. “Cocaine Bear” ($19.99) came out on PVOD after its third weekend — standard timing for Universal. Since it was still strong in theaters, home availability would usually guarantee across-the-board #1 rankings at iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu.
But surprise — A24 lowered the price of “The Whale” to $4.99 just before Brendan Fraser’s Best Actor win. The film soared to the top at iTunes and Google Play right after the Oscars.
Both sites rank by transaction, which benefits any lower-cost rental. However, Darren Aronofsky’s film is also #2 at Vudu, which counts by revenue. (Vudu has “Cocaine Bear” at #1).
Meantime, Oscar juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All at Once” — available on streaming as well as theaters — stayed strong at $19.99. That price may have discouraged some buyers, but it still placed fourth or fifth on all charts.
“A Man Called Otto” (Sony), with its price reduced to $5.99, continued its strong chart showing.

Plot: A teenage boy runs away to follow his father’s footsteps, legendary storm chaser Bill Brody.
Review: It’s been quite a long time since we’ve gotten a fun film about inclement weather. Having grown up on films like Twister and Deep Impact, natural disasters always make for a thrilling story. Whether the other pieces come together is often up to the individual, but I feel most people going into a “weather” movie, have those expectations properly adjusted. But Supercell has a surprising amount of heart and some interesting performances that put this above some other low-budget types.
Supercell starts in fairly stereotypical fashion, with our lead’s father dying in a giant supercell. Years later, his mother is a complete mess and has left weather researching behind. Yet the son, William, wants to walk in his dad’s footsteps. That’s to say he wants to research Supercells…...

If 1996's "Twister" taught us anything, it's that storm chasing is not only exhilarating, but when things go wrong it makes for one hell of a natural disaster movie. In 2024, we'll be treated to "Twisters," the long-awaited follow-up to "Twister," which is looking to capitalize on the success of legacy sequels, similar to "Top Gun: Maverick." But before that disaster epic touches ground and lays waste to the box office, another group of reckless storm chasers, led by none other than Alec Baldwin, will be heading directly into the eye of the storm for our viewing pleasure.

"There's a dark side to this, and your father crossed over from time to time." Saban has released a second official trailer for the storm chasers thriller movie Supercell, set to open in theaters and on VOD later this month. The first trailer arrived a few weeks ago, with this next one being labeled as a "Director's Trailer" - meaning the director must've edited himself to better represent the film. This thriller is inspired by real life stories of storm chasers as well as the tour agencies that end up caught up in dangerously real trouble all for a profit. A teenage boy runs away to follow his father's footsteps - the legendary storm chaser Bill Brody, played by Richard Gunn - when a powerful storm arrives. "He chased for knowledge, not thrill." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for a storm thriller titled Supercell, made by a first-time filmmaker named Herbert James Winterstern. For an actor, landing a role on a TV series provides steady work in a business in which employment is usually uncertain. If that show becomes a hit, then all bets are off, with the gig escalating to something more akin to winning the lottery thanks to instant celebrity and an often giant salary. Of course, the odds of being cast in a hit TV series can be just as improbable as hitting the jackpot, which is why it can seem puzzling when a star decides walk away from a hit show. Sometimes, it's because an actor has been fired for whatever reason, but on other occasions, the exit comes at the behest of the star, who makes the risky decision to leave a sure thing for an unknown future. For viewers who earn in a year what a TV star rakes in for one episode, this can cause head-scratching,...

Actor Alec Baldwin claims he “lost five jobs” after a shooting on the set of Rust left cinematographer Halyna Hutchins dead.
In a new interview with CNN, Baldwin said the October 2021 incident has cost him numerous acting roles. “I got fired from another job yesterday…There I was all set to go to a movie, jump on a plane … I’ve been talking with these guys for months and they told me yesterday we don’t want to do the film with you because of this.”
Alec Baldwin has repeatedly claims he did not pull the trigger that resulted in the shooting on the set of Rust. A recent FBI investigation found that the gun could not have been fired without doing so. He has shifted blame to an armorer/prop assistant and the assistant director who handed him the gun.

The cause of death of Anne Heche has been revealed. The Hollywood Reporter, citing the official coroner’s report, reported the actress’ accidental death was a result of “inhalation and thermal injuries,” in addition to “sternal fracture due to blunt trauma.”

It took nearly 60 firefighters over an hour to extinguish the fire and remove Heche from the vehicle. A producer on “Rust” is backing another independent film, “Sam & Kate,” starring Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek, which is set to begin production early next year.
Ryan Smith is helping to finance the film, which is set to shoot in Thomasville, Ga., starting in mid-February. A source close to the project said that Smith is putting in a portion of the financing and will get an executive producer credit, but that he and his company will not be involved in physical production.
Smith, his business partner Allen Cheney, and their company, Thomasville Pictures, have been named in two lawsuits stemming from the fatal shooting on the set of “Rust” last month in New Mexico. Actor Alec Baldwin was preparing for a scene when he shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded the film’s director. The film has shut down indefinitely.

Getting romantic dramas made in today’s cinematic landscape is becoming more and more challenging, yet veteran director Andy Fickman, who is currently in production on the buzzy indie “One True Loves,” remains cheerful and optimistic about the genre. “In general, and pretty much short of being a tentpole, it’s very hard to get things made. People aren’t making romantic dramedies that much anymore, but at the same time, there’s a real need for content because of the streaming outlets,” says Fickman, whose energy level remains high even after shooting an all-nighter. Highland Film Group is representing international rights to “One True Loves,” and is co-financing the picture alongside Blue Rider’s Walter Josten. Highland Film Group’s domestic arm, the Avenue, is distributing domestically.

In 2016, Kelly Grimsley was vacationing in Los Angeles when she was invited to lunch with a family friend. The lunch turned out to be a pitch meeting for an investment in an independent film, and Grimsley ended up putting in $250,000 to get it made.
Grimsley would later sue the producers — Ryan Smith and Allen Cheney — claiming they had improperly embezzled $40,000, some of which went to pay a personal credit card bill and health insurance premiums.
The suit portrays Smith, 36, and Cheney, 33, as being in well over their heads, ultimately having to be rescued by Cheney’s father, the CEO of a local bank. The complaint describes the pair as “fledgling film producers with virtually no creative or business achievements in the film industry.”
