Warning: Spoilers
It seems the balance of this show is going to be one comedic case and one serious one a week. I think that works, but right now the show is coasting by on being different. The writing and acting isn't strong, but it feels fresh and unique. I just worry that when that runs out we'll be stuck with a bad show.

Sweet Bird Of Truth Indeed

Warning: Spoilers
Lola Carmichael (Simone Missick) presides over her first trial that deals with cybercriminality (I just made up that word; you're welcome). Two friends, Janny Cartwright and Andrea Monroe fight over a deceased avatar (a computer-generated image). As for that lovable bailiff Luke Watkins (J. Alex Brinson), he gets rousted and taken down by several meatheaded deputies with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department while he was jogging that morning in his civilian clothes; the excuse was that he matched the description of a black man who was breaking into people's cars and stealing stuff, you see. And Luke is also a sheriff's deputy with the LASD! How about those apples!. Meantime, assistant district attorney Mark Callan client Soraya Bayani (Nicole Santiago) says she almost got run over by a vindictive driver. Callan's bossman, Deputy District Attorney Thomas Choi (Reggie Lee) says his case is a waste of the court's time. Choi seems to be marking time until a better slot opens up. And then there's Supervising Judge Lisa Benner (welcome back Marg Helgenberger) says that Lola needs to be hanging out with the rest of the judges. Well, Lisa has one damn hell of a lot of nerve. Those very same judges got into an elevator and there was room for one more, namely Lola. Instead, those old white judges shut the door on her. They might as well be sending her a message: "You want to be an activist judge, go do it somewhere else, like in Atlanta, Georgia. Jesus, the brothers would love you over there. The boys in the hood would like a sista like yourself. You don't belong here. You never belonged here. We don't want you here, and we want you to go away". Except for the supposition that these old white judges are depicted as conservative, the episode was pretty good. At one point, Janny Cartwright dresses up as a bird. At least she didn't look like Tweety Pie. Some fellow gamer might have shown up looking like Sylvester the Cat, and all hell would have broken loose in Lola's courtroom. And as for Luke Watkins, he does not know whether he's going to show up at the Valor Awards dinner where he is supposed to get the Valor Award for stopping that out-of-control bailiff who shot up the courtroom. In the end, he does show up and tells one of the meatheaded deputies who had arrested him that morning to be smarter. And Lola's FBI husband arrives for the dinner. Soraya 's case is prosecuted by Mark Callan, and justice has its day. I look for Thomas Choi to get his exit papers. Wait and see.
