Michael is the Lucifer we needed!
camille_bourg-115 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This time, we get down to serious business: this episode is undoubtedly the most exciting of this beginning of season 5! It works even better as Michael is exactly the Lucifer traumatized and changed by his thousands of years away from his beloved alone in a hostile environment that we expected to discover upon his return. Visibly very excited about this new part after 4 years as only Lucifer, Tom delivers to us a striking performance where we exult to see the false Lucifer, too perfect with his exaggerated British accent and his sweet words and puppy eyes for Chloe, become Michael within one look, one smile; despite the same performer, Michael is not Lucifer and we could almost believe that it is not Tom who embodies both but two different men: Michael doesn't have the same mouth or the same eyes, not to mention his thick American accent and his hunched posture with his dislocated shoulder, or the fact that he is left-handed! Logically, whereas the power of nice and charming Lucifer is to arouse desire, the one of deceitful and ominous Michael is to arouse fear, in a new inversion of the image that we traditionally have of the devil and angels; a fear that he instils throughout the episode in the minds of those who bother him to get rid of them, making a disturbing secret about Linda surface, and turning Amenadiel to the baby's sugar daddy, even though it is what ends up betraying him. Ultimately, his only weakness is Chloe, whom he intended to break her heart, arranging for her to catch him having sex with Maze before he plays for her the act, gripping by the way, of the confused lover in need for love and complete disarray, but that we can see very obviously that he falls completely under her spell! The scene where she straight-out turns him on while they make coffee in the precinct's rest room, brushing his hand as if by accident with every gesture, languidly sucking her spoon or seeking money for the vending machine directly in his pants, on a swaying and suggestive music, is maybe the hottest of the whole show! Giving up for her on his plan to attract Lucifer to Earth in order to discredit him, Michael decides to leave him in hell and take his place, including in his beloved's bed; we have there to underline the attitude of Maze, a character in great progress, when she understands it: yes she is furious with Lucifer and had even agreed to help Michael to punish him, but not if it is Chloe who must suffer for that, and the demon will not let her friend become a collateral damage... but Michael, unable to beat her by force, gets rid of her by ruse, and when Chloe comes to join him that evening at the penthouse, visibly ripe and ready to be harvested, hardly do we still dare to breathe... and it is the moment when she shoots him in the leg, proving that he is not Lucifer! She had understood from the start! Which makes the whole episode even more exhilarating in retrospect! Lauren being definitely brilliant, Chloe reaffirms her love for Lucifer and shuts Michael up as she did to her father's murderer in episode 2x07; unfortunately, an archangel is something else than a simple rogue bureaucrat, and it's well and truly as the winner that Michael leaves, not on yet another lie but on the horrible truth: the revelation to Chloe that she is a puppet artificially created by God especially for Lucifer... Since season 2, the threat of this discovery was hanging above her head like a sword of Damocles; now that it did fall down, how on earth is her relationship with Lucifer going to survive it...? What an incredible episode!

Back to case of the week...
aarongnr21 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
And it's really rather boring. Unlike in the first season, the cases this season are entirely background noise, distracting from the actual story. I'm not interested in this random case at all. If you are, fine, but I don't know why you would be.

Seasons 3 and 4 were really good, mainly because they went away from the case of the week format abit (even though they still had it of course) and had way more focus on an overarching story arc.

The story this season is obviously about Lucifer's twin brother, but honestly, so far, I'm not really interested in him. The fact that Michael looks just like Lucifer is nothing more than a gimmick after this episode, because everyone knows he's not him anyway. I would've much prefered a different actor in that role.

Oh well, let's see where this goes. So far, not convinced.

I loved the first one and this is better
evansjoshyr21 August 2020
This new series is off to a magnificent start. I thought the previous episode was an amazing episode to the show, and yet, somehow this one just topped it in every way. While the trailer spoils a few things it remained fairly unpredictable and a joy throughout

Ellis Does an Amazing Job Making Michael and Lucifer Two Distinctly Different Characters with the Same "Admittedly Dashing Face"
kyttness3 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
You cannot truly appreciate the amazing acting done by Ellis with his portrayal of Michael in contrast to Lucifer unless you watch this episode 3-5 times. You'll start to notice that Ellis has paid attention to every small detail of his role as Lucifer and used that to create a perfectly contrasting character with Michael. Of course his stance (when no one else is looking) is obviously different - the right shoulder much higher than the left), details like which hand he uses to pick up his glass (not sure if they have two different dominant hands or if Michael's injury (which we haven't been told the story about yet) forced him to use his left hand instead of his right. Don't just stop there - what's inside the glass is even more noticeable as Lucifer almost always drinks whiskey but Michael never does so - always pouring himself (shakily) a glass of gin or maybe vodka? (or even water?). Another obvious difference between Michael and Lucifer is their accents. Michael obviously uses the British accent when pretending to be Lucifer but an American accent when talking to those who know he's Michael. Pay close attention to the way Ellis looks at German (Chloe) when he is Michael vs. when he is Lucifer. Ellis has gotten down the look of complete love and adoration when Lucifer is looking into Chloe's eyes - but he also keeps that look absent when Michael is looking at Chloe. After all, that kind of true love - you just can't fake it even if you do have the same face. Pay attention the the characters facial expressions and you'll also discover slight differences between Lucifer and Michael. Ellis does an amazing job bring Michael to life - so much so that he makes us long to see Lucifer and hate Michael in this episode.

This is Lucifer
GraXXoR4 September 2020
Top notch! Here we get to see a new "aspect" of Lucifer's past in this tightly written episode.

Built upon four years of shared experience, we know all the ins and outs, all the foibles and all the nuances that make up the quintessential Lucifer... And so does Decker.

Great acting, with a new menace and undercurrent aplenty, I sense the season ark this year is going to be very, very close to home.

Best episode of S5 and one of the best in the series
nrohit-9361625 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A rare episode in which we don't even see Lucifer. Tom Ellis carried this episode as Michael and Michael's impersonation of Lucifer was convincing yet conspicuous. Lauren has improved her acting since S4 and in the final scene she definitely shines. The crime case isn't very compelling, but definitely takes a back seat in this one. All the interactions of Michael with Maze, Chloe, Linda and Amenadiel were a treat to watch. Michael looked menacing when he was pretending to be Lucifer, especially in his scene with Linda and Amenadiel.

Overall, easily the best episode of the season as they took a bold gamble and exlcuded Lucifer completely in this one. Credit goes to Tom Ellis.

Great episode !!!
joeyfrats29 August 2020
Others have posted "spoiler alerts", but I will not. Just a little note expressing the mind-bend of Tom Ellis stepping away from his Welsh dialect and sounding like one of the guys on the block here in USA! Great experience and it shows the acting chops of this diverse actor! Great job, Tom!!

A little better than the first episode
peterheiberg21 August 2020
After the dissapointment of the first episode, my expectations wasn't high watching the second. But it was a lot better, though a little boring. I really look forward to episode 3, with a new director and Lucifer hopefully back at his best!

NO MICHAEL STAY, BAD ANGEL
humzahladiwala29 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Hey, Mikey, BACK OFF FROM DECKER. That was the most uncomfortable and thing I've seen in this show, but other than that, this episode was very fun. Lauren German is proving that she is a real talent, but her performance as Chloe Decker was perfect. But I cannot stress this enough, MICHAEL BACK OFF.

Michael is so Bad
lgday03293 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
How can Michael be an angel if he is so bad? Tom Ellis plays Michael so well and when he's speaking his lines in English, he sounds like he is imitating Ryan Reynolds!
