Shooting was planned over a period of three years so the young actors would be aging believably during the film. Leading actors Simone Tang and Thomas Ernst say that this also gave them a better approach to their characters, because they could bring their own experiences during that time to the film.
The story is set in the 1960s because writer/director Nils Malmros is telling memories of his own youth.
Simone Tang was so sad when her long hair had to be cut for the role of Agnete that she spent much of her first salary on extensions.
