"I was nice today..." Warning: Spoilers
Ren goes completely mad from sheer jealousy after being made the 'president' of Stimpy's fan club and being put in charge of reading and responding to the countless adoring letters that the dopey cat receives. This is a top episode of the show that has a great funny buildup to its darkly bizarre and hilarious edgy ending and then a last minute more positive conclusion. I love all of the episode but I don't think anyone would disagree that the best part of it as well as one of the most mesmerisingly insane and surrealistic sequences of the entire series would had to be Ren's eerie and demented monologue to himself as he watches over and contemplates breaking the sleeping Stimpy's neck and is about to do it when he suffers a sudden brain attack which I think may be his conscience coming through! It's such an unexpectedly intense little scene, so gripping and amazingly well done, truly the show at its best. John Kricfalusi did a phenomenal bit of voice acting there, he was definitely the best voice for Ren in my book and it's too bad he didn't stick around, because the man could vocally convey escalating madness like nobody's business! I love the way the tone switches so quickly from a scary note to a poignant one as Ren deliriously gloats as he reads out the one fan letter that he thinks he's finally got until he gets to the end of it and discovers that it was actually written by Stimpy to try and make him feel better. I don't like the way they felt the need to spoil the moment a little by showing the ugly unseen faces leering in the window, but I suppose it wouldn't have been in keeping with the spirit of the show to have ever played anything completely straight. This well-constructed and written episode is one of the real gems of Ren and Stimpy, and is hilarious, grotesque and wonderfully twisted, and then it pulls out a surprisingly sweet and heartfelt ending out of nowhere. Still a ton of offbeat fun and well deserving of a mighty 10 Hot stinging brains out of 10! X
