The original name of the film was Freaky Friday the 13th, a reference to the various Freaky Friday (1976) films, about a mother and daughter body swapping, and the Friday the 13th (1980) films.
Kathryn Newton was the first choice for Millie, but she originally declined the role. However, after speaking with Jason Blum about the project, she eventually changed her mind.

Director/co-writer Christopher Landon proposed a crossover movie with Happy Death Day (2017), called "Freaky Death Day".
Vince Vaughn told the stunt driver to actually hit him with the car when he was crossing the street, early in the film. The director said Vaughn said he could take the hit, and he did.
