Brooks Robinson of the World Champion Baltimore Orioles hit a home run in the 6th inning, tying the game for the American League.
Tony Perez of the Cincinnatti Reds hit a home run in the top of the 15th inning to give the National League a 2-1 lead. It proved to be the winning hit.
National League starter Juan Marichal was relieved by Ferguson Jenkins in the 4th inning. Jenkins, in turn, was relieved by Bob Gibson in the 7th, who was relieved by Chris Short in 9th who gave way to Mike Cuellar in the 11th. 'Don Drysdale' came in for the National League in the 13th inning and was credited with the win after Perez's dinger put the senior circuit ahead for good in the top of the 15th. Tom Seaver pitched the scoreless bottom of the 15th inning, but did not get a save as that statistic was not official until 1969.
Hollywood playboy Dean Chance of the host Angels started the game and gave up a solo home run to Dick Allen in the 2nd. He was relieved by Jim McGlothin in the 4th, who in turn was relieved by Gary Peters in the 6th. Al Downing came in to pitch for the junior circuit in the 9th, and was relieved by Catfish Hunter in the 11th. Hunter lost the game, surrendering a circuit clout to Tony Perez in the 15th.
