Rasika Dugal is one of the most striking faces in the firmament of Indian entertainment and has a checkered career in cinema and on the small screen. Always eager to push boundaries, she now stars in award-winning director Karan Gour’s film ‘Fairy Folk’ which will hit Indian screens on March 1. The film has already won wide acclaim at the Sydney Film Festival, the Chicago International Film Festival, Mami (Mumbai), and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, and will now enjoy a theatrical release across Mumbai, Delhi, Goa, Kolkata, and Bengaluru.
Interestingly, this is the first time that Rasika is sharing screen space with her husband Mukul Chadda. Although not exactly famous for erotic films, particularly considering the conservative nature of many countries and the harsh censorship occasionally found (with the exception of Japan and Korea), films that could be described as erotic can be found in Asia also. Of note, however, is a recent trend that has begun within the Japanese movie industry, of presenting erotic films that try to cater to the aesthetics of both men and women, while abiding by the MeToo rules, with the result being interesting as much as ambitious as much as an effort mostly found in Chinese cinema, to come up with titles that combine the erotic with the intensely art house.
In this list, we tried to focus on titles where the erotic is one of the key elements, while trying to stay away from exploitation or soft-porn (S. Korean cinema is filled with these btw) for the most part,...

Kanu Behl’s sophomore Agra takes an unapologetic stance on the exploration of human desires, particularly the extremes to which one can go to satiate their repressed wants. In this stark tale, empathy becomes a casualty, sacrificed at the altar of self-preservation. Antipathy becomes a shield, not just against societal judgment but against the relentless inquiry into the protagonist’s soul. Being the victim of fractured masculinity, he becomes the unwitting perpetrator, orchestrating a cycle of belligerent steps that threatens to consume any flicker of virtuous clarity. Yet, amid this psychological battleground, the very excuses that he clings to for survival become the chains that bind him to a distorted reality. The assertive conduct, once a coping mechanism, transforms into a prison of his own making. The walls echo with haunting whispers of what could have been, drowned out by the cacophony of corollaries that now define his existence.

The idea took seed with his debut film ‘Titli’. The fact that he himself experienced certain sexual repression while growing up and witnessed the same among many people around him, made critically acclaimed filmmaker Kanu Behl whose latest ‘Agra’ was screened at the Director’s Fortnight section at Cannes take up the subject in the film.
“I asked myself what is the larger context and how does this very personal impulse become universal? It was then that the idea of physical spaces struck me and I found that to be a very interesting take on life — not just on the personal, but a larger socio-cultural context. The more I delved into the protagonist’s emotional landscape, I realised that his sexuality was related to the physical spaces that he inhabited and the latter was getting ‘affected’ by that as well. There was breathing give and take…It was an interesting...

After his debut feature “Titli” bowed at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard strand in 2014, Kanu Behl is back on the Croisette with “Agra,” which has its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight.
” ‘Agra’ grasps the reality of patriarchy in India through the prism of male sexual misery,” is how the festival describes the film. It follows Guru, a young single call center employee who still lives with his parents. Consumed by frustration, he plunges into a fever bordering on insanity, between pathetic fantasies, dating apps and hysterical self-harm. The film also explores the role property can play in a young man’s emancipation.
