Save for a couple of unfortunate attempts, Prime Video has really been on a streak of great adaptations in the 2020s so far. Apart from the more mainstream examples of that, the streamer released an animated TV show based on an iconic tabletop game franchise which, in many fans’ eyes, is the best adaptation of said game’s universe to date.
Misfit Adventurers to Return Later in 2024
Created by Critical Role, The Legend of Vox Machina is an epic animated series based on Dungeons & Dragons. It’s often dubbed as the best D&d adaptation out there even despite Honor Among Thieves’ existence. Like the latter, Vox Machina follows a group of misfit adventurers who are dragged into the whole “saving the world” business right from their favorite tavern.
First in The Washington Post article and then on Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham’s X account, the confirmations of Season 3 suddenly appeared.

Since bursting onto the scene via Twitch in 2015, Critical Role has morphed from a group of friends playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons to a worldwide entertainment sensation. Among the accomplishments the company has created since taking control of its own IP in 2018: a hit animated series on Prime Video, novel and comic tie-ins by way of their own publishing arm Darrington Press, and of course, innovative new games and systems in the tabletop roleplay space. One of those latest offerings is their own brainchild: Candela Obscura. Created by Critical Role’s Taliesin Jaffe and Chris Lockey, with lead designer Spenser Starke (Alice is Missing) and writer Rowan Hall (Willing & Fable), the game was conceived alongside Darrington Press using the company’s new roleplay system Illuminated Worlds. The live play horror drama follows a diverse group of investigators, ranging from professors to criminals to mediums, who ...

Struggling to recall the last time the internet seemed like a force for good in the world? Yancey Strickler can cite the exact date: March 13, 2013.
That’s the day that Kickstarter’s co-founder and former CEO Strickler and writer/director Rob Thomas launched the “Veronica Mars” Movie Project on the then-four-year-old crowdfunding platform. Within 11 hours, tens of thousands of “Veronica Mars” fans opened their wallets to quickly hit the $2 million goal to bring Thomas’ low-rated high school detective series starring Kristen Bell as the eponymous teen gumshoe back from the TV graveyard as a feature film, which opened in theaters 10 years ago on March 14, 2014.
“It was just love — that’s what it felt like,” Strickler told IndieWire about being in the room with Thomas when the “Veronica Mars” campaign launched, and the fan-raised funds rolled in en masse. “There was a documentary crew there filming; the cast kept calling us,...

The modern video game industry primarily consists of two groups: Aaa developers and indie studios. The Aaa group has access to millions of dollars worth of funding and large development teams, while indie companies generally have smaller budgets and crews. While some indie organizations can receive an injection of cash from publishers, these days many studios turn to Kickstarter.
Kickstarter is arguably the most popular site that lets potential patrons vote with their wallets. If someone sees something they like, they can give it some money and bring it to life. The site has resulted in more than its fair share of noteworthy projects, including the Gloomhaven board game series and the amazing show The Legend of Vox Machina. However, Kickstarter is also home to just as many duds, such as the Skarp Laser Razor and the Ouya. Video games are no exception, as the site has played host to...

“Rick and Morty.” “Futurama.” “South Park.” ”Bob’s Burgers.” “Archer.” “The Simpsons.” “Family Guy.” “American Dad!”
What do these shows have in common? For one thing, they’re the Top 8 most popular adult animated comedies, according to a Ranker list that’s been voted on by 50,000 TV fans. But the shows also all premiered at least 10 years ago — and as of the writing of this article, they’re all still on the air. (“Archer” will officially conclude with a special finale event in December.)
The story of adult animated comedy arguably begins with the runaway success of “The Simpsons,” which premiered back in 1989. Since then, each successive decade has brought with it a crop of new and seemingly inexhaustible cartoon series, from “The Simpsons” and “South Park” in the 1990s, to “Family Guy” and “Futurama” in the 2000s, to “Bob’s Burgers” and “Rick and Morty” in the 2010s. Actor Ashley Johnson — star of the popular web series “Critical Role” and video game franchise “The Last of Us” — has filed a lawsuit against Brian Foster, her ex-boyfriend and former “Critical Role” castmate, alleging domestic violence, sexual battery, assault, stalking, gender violence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and civil rights violations.
The suit was filed on Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, with seven female plaintiffs — six named, including Johnson and her sister, Haylie Langseth, and one Jane Doe — alleging misconduct by Foster over “the last decade” that was “fueled by chronic abuse of drugs and alcohol.”
In the suit, Johnson alleges that her relationship with Foster began in October 2012 and he moved into her home soon after. By 2015, she alleges that, “on a nearly daily basis,” he would go into “a violent fit,” which included “breaking glass, punching through glass doors, breaking a gate, slamming doors, and getting in...

Prime Video’s next adult animated series is going to the devil.
The Amazon-owned streamer has ordered two seasons of Hazbin Hotel, a series based on a 2019 animated pilot of the same name by Vivienne Medrano. A24 is producing the series, with Fox’s Bento Box Entertainment handling the animation. The first season is set to premiere in January.
Hazbin Hotel centers on Charlie, the princess of Hell, and her mission of rehabilitating demons as a means of peacefully reducing overpopulation in the realm. She opens a hotel with the hope that her guests will check out and move into Heaven. Most of Hell is skeptical to say the least, but her devoted partner, Vaggie, and their first test subject, adult film star Angel Dust, stand by her. A powerful entity called the Radio Demon reaches out to assist Charlie, giving her crazy dream a chance to become a reality.

Lance Reddick’s unexpected death in March 2023 halted a thriving acting career that consisted of many memorable performances, including several voice-over gigs on TV series like “Castlevania,” “Duck Tales” and “Rick and Morty.” In addition to half a dozen mid-production projects, his legacy could include a posthumous Emmy victory in honor of his vocal work on the Amazon Prime Video animated series “The Legend of Vox Machina.” After Chadwick Boseman, who won the 2022 Best Character Voice-Over prize for “What If…?” two years after his death, Reddick would be the second posthumous recipient of any voice acting Emmy.
Reddick joined the recurring cast of “The Legend of Vox Machina” in its second season, which concluded less than a month before he died. His character, Thordak, is the leader of a group of dragons known as the Chroma Conclave, whose destructive plans are encumbered by the heroic, interspecific members of Vox Machina.

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) was the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2023 Best Character Voice-Over ballot consists of 148 performances, which is down by 74 from last year. Seeking her third victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).

The “Angry Birds” universe just became one series bigger. Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Kids+ has picked up “Angry Birds Mystery Island” to series from Eric Rogers (Futurama) and Titmouse.

Most Nintendo games aren’t known for their stellar voice acting (or even have voice acting), so when one features voice-acted cutscenes, it’s usually a big deal. But while Nintendo is still getting used to producing titles with vocal performances, at least the company knows how to properly cast the roles themselves.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the first time a Zelda game featured good voice acting. And when Nintendo announced a sequel, audiences hoped it would live up to that legacy. From what we’ve seen so far, Tears of the Kingdom’s most prominent characters won’t be recast, and some new faces will join them, one of whom is arguably the best casting choice we’ve seen in a long time.

Amazon is pushing deeper into its animated Batman universe.
The retail giant and streamer has officially confirmed its previously reported two-season order for Matt Reeves, J.J. Abrams and Bruce Timm’s animated Batman: Caped Crusader series. Additionally, Amazon has picked up an original animated film, Merry Little Batman, and an animated spinoff series, Bat-Family, both of which — like Caped Crusader — hail from Warner Bros. Discovery’s Warner Bros. Animation and DC.
“Batman: The Animated Series helped pioneer in the evolution of superhero storytelling and defined the Dark Knight for a generation,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios. “Batman: Caped Crusader will no doubt continue that tradition and, alongside Merry Little Batman and Bat-Family, we’re thrilled to collaborate with Warner Bros. Animation to offer a variety of takes of the Batman mythos to our global Prime Video customers.”

This article spoils a great joke from "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." Proceed with caution!
After "Game of Thrones" inspired a wave of fantasy projects seeking to replicate the tone of HBO's dark, gritty, depressingly violent fantasy series, it's almost surprising when we get a new fantasy TV show or film that remembers you can have fun with the genre. This is why the scene where the harfoots sing a little walking song in "The Rings of Power" is so special and heartfelt; why "The Dragon Prince" bringing epic fantasy to young audiences is so important; and why "The Legend of Vox Machina" capturing the chaos and silly energy of tabletop RPG sessions makes for such an enjoyable experience.
This is to say, there were many ways "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" could have failed miserably. It could have been too meta like the "D&d" episode of "Community,...

"Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" could have easily gone wrong. It could have been an attempt to replicate the grittiness of "Game of Thrones" or just a copy of Middle-earth. The writers could have shamefully hidden what makes the game weird and fun. Thankfully, none of that happened. Instead, this is a hilarious adventure comedy film, one that is deeply weird, from its creature designs to its humor -- which is not self-referential or campy, but genuine and heartfelt -- and right down to its portrayal of magic having several components and not being super reliable. This is the closest we've got to actually capturing what it is like to play D&d since "The Legend of Vox Machina," which was actually adapted from a real D&d campaign.
All the characters in the film are like archetypes you find in the game, but with enough nuance and depth to feel like real people.

Actor Lance Reddick, who appeared in major TV series like ‘The Wire’, ‘Fringe’ and ‘Bosch’ and films like the ‘John Wick’ franchise, which is set to debut ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ next week, died of natural causes aged 60.

Sometimes you read a headline that feels so impossibly off-balance with the world, you can't help but wonder if you're living in a simulation or the world's worst season of "The Truman Show." Today was one of those days, as we tragically lost Lance Reddick, one of the most remarkable figures in film and television. Reddick was best known for playing Cedric Daniels on the hit HBO series "The Wire," which led to a fruitful career playing other authority figures because no one on the planet can pull off a uniform quite like he could.
But Lance Reddick was so much more than a cool bald guy in a freshly-pressed suit with optional wire-rim glasses. The man was also a formidable presence in genre projects, both big and small. He was one of those performers who could elevate any story simply by being on screen, exuding an immeasurable amount of...

Batman: Caped Crusader has found a new home at Amazon.
The streamer and retail giant has handed out a two-season order for the animated series that was scrapped at HBO Max last August. Caped Crusader landed at the Jennifer Salke-led streamer after producer Warner Bros. Animation shopped the project following the cost-cutting move that saw parent company Warner Bros. Discovery scrap the show more than a year and a half after ordering it straight to series. Other streamers, including Netflix, Apple and Hulu, also kicked the tires on the project that marks a reunion for executive producers J.J. The animated series hails from Bruce Timm, Abrams and Reeves and was sold to a streaming rival as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s efforts to monetize content by selling projects to third-party buyers.

Everyone's favorite globe-trotting, brown jacket-wearing, and ethically dubious archaeologist is returning to the spotlight. That's right: 12 years after being fired by the Smithsonian, Rip Digman is coming out of retirement and eager to prove he's still got what it takes to be a world-class "Archie." The idea of a "Dungeons & Dragons" movie has felt like a no-brainer for quite a while now. The game dates back to 1974 and spent many years as the marker of a true nerd. Celebrating all things nerdy has long since become the cultural norm, however, and D&d has never been more popular than it is right now! Not only are more people getting into the game themselves, but there are also D&d podcasts like "The Adventure Zone," references to the game on popular shows like "Stranger Things," Twitch gameplays like "Critical Role," and the show inspired by it, "The Legend of Vox Machina." It was only a matter of time before someone put the brand name to good use and brought the joys of adventuring to the big screen.

Eat your heart out, Austin Butler. As wild as Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis" biopic got at certain points, it's safe to say it never quite managed to top the zaniness on display in "Agent Elvis," Netflix's new animated series that sees the King of Rock and Roll suit up to use his world-famous talents in a slightly different way. We've been following this oddity of a concept for quite some time now, with our first look at the adult-oriented and violent show last year promising the sort of alternate history mayhem that only animation can truly do justice to. Like a cross between "Archer," Hulu's "Hit-Monkey," and other similarly out-there premises, "Agent Elvis" promises to pack quite the punch.

Epic fantasy series based on hugely popular and intricate books are on almost every network and streamer, from “House of the Dragon” and “The Rings of Power” to “The Witcher” and “The Wheel of Time.” Then there’s Amazon Prime Video’s “The Legend of Vox Machina,” an animated series as intricate and complex as any of its live-action counterparts, but with a key difference: Its source material is “Critical Role,” an improvised livestream on YouTube and Twitch in which professional actors portray characters playing Dungeons & Dragons.
“Having room to play and improv can fall by the wayside when writing for animation,” series writer Meredith Kecskemety told IndieWire. “You’re writing for the actor and you’re writing for the board artists all to determine a single performance, but having this tabletop, improvised foundation lends itself to being adapted to the screen. Fantasy is all the rage on television. Sure, the genre has been popular before, and each decade has given us hugely influential and fantastic stories of magic and fantastical creatures, from "Xena: Warrior Princess" to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." But when "Game of Thrones" exploded onto the scene with a mature, gory, politically charged fantasy story, it kickstarted a fantasy TV race, forcing every studio and streaming service to run and make their own fantasy epic, no matter how much they had to pay for it.
Meanwhile, animation has always been at the forefront of fantasy television. There were Saturday morning cartoons like "Dungeons & Dragons" and "He-Man," shows like "Gargoyles" that focused more on worldbuilding and sequential storytelling, and also "Dragon Age: Absolution" and "The Dragon Prince," which deliver the kind of epic fantasy storytelling we commonly only see on the big screen.
And then there's "The Legend of Vox Machina.

"Dungeons & Dragons," and tabletop RPGs in general, are some of the most fun you can do with a group. The crafting of a fantasy world and the improvised telling of a story as a community is exhilarating, and it's no surprise that livestream campaigns of these games have become so popular in recent years. As time-consuming as the games can be, they offer long-form storytelling that can never be replicated, because no two tables and no two campaigns are the same.
Of course, there are "Dungeons & Dragons" livestreams and then there's "Critical Role," a livestream show where a group of voice actors, led by Matt Mercer, play a game of "D&d." The show started streaming in 2015 and it quickly grew to titanic levels of popularity, with millions of views and subscribers. Fans were drawn to the show's laugh-out-loud crude humor, tear-jerking moments, and its story full of twists and turns,...

Yep, in Agent Elvis, Presley isn’t just the ‘Hound Dog’ crooner – he’s also a super spy for the American government, as quick with a John Wick-worthy pencil takedown as a shake of the hips. And just for proof you’re not hallucinating, here’s the show’s batshit official logline: “Elvis Presley trades in his jumpsuit for a jet pack when he is covertly inducted into a secret government spy program to battle the dark forces that threaten the country he loves – all while holding down his day job as the King of Rock and Roll.” So this Elvis is A Little Less Conversation, a little more action.

Animation fans are eating good. Between anime being more popular and accessible than ever before, major studios experimenting with visual styles, and streaming giving an avenue to auteurs to make passion projects — even giving stop-motion the comeback it so dearly deserves — this is a great time to be a fan of one of the oldest filmmaking mediums there is.
Still, with so much animation comes the fact that not everything is special or outstanding. But every once in a while there comes a project, a movie or a film that fully understands the medium of animation's ability to deliver stories in a different reality — be it a heightened reality that feels mostly like ours, or a cartoony one. These projects remind us of how special animation is, both to deliver exquisitely artful stories or just cuckoo bananas, off-the-wall, incredibly silly yet fun experiences.
The latter is why I've been so...

On the surface, "The Legend of Vox Machina" is the perfect fit for an animated series. Take the first season of the hugely successful actual play podcast "Critical Role," translate its fantastical story to the screen, bring in the show's crew of voice actors to play their characters, and pick the talented Studio Grackle (best known for contributing animation to the popular video game "Hades") to handle the opening credits. It's a slam dunk. Then you crunch the numbers. The first "Critical Role" campaign, on which "Vox Machina" is based, is 115 episodes and totals "about 400 hours," per player Travis Willingham in an interview with Inverse. By contrast, each season of "The Legend of Vox Machina" is 12 episodes long. An episode runs roughly 24 minutes. The recent release of the second season brings the runtime of the "Vox Machina" animated series to under 12 hours, less than three percent the total length of the first campaign.

It’s almost impossible to discount the success of The Legend of Vox Machina, Prime Video‘s animated series based on the Dungeons & Dragons campaign originally started by the media company known as Critical Role. Ahead of its second season and during October’s New York Comic Con, the series announced a surprise third season renewal. Then, just five days after the Season 2 premiere on January 20, Amazon Studios announced a multi-year television and first-look deal, which will include a new animated series based on Critical Role’s second campaign The Mighty Nein. All this, plus a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes! While the first season of the show found the unlikely group of heroes coming together and learning how to work as a team, the second season kicks things into high gear by introducing challenges both emotional and dangerous (their main foe this time around is a group of...

With only its second season underway, Prime Video’s animated adult fantasy The Legend of Vox Machina is proving to be one of the streamer’s latest and fruitful ventures into the medium and geek culture-at-large.
Debuting in 2022, its critically acclaimed first season — largely funded through a kickstarer campaign and produced in partnership with Amazon Studios and Titmouse — arrived in the same year as a few other epic, sprawling fantasy TV series. Most notably His Dark Materials, The Sandman, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon. After garnering an early third season renewal and just five days after the show’s Jan. 20 second season premiere, Amazon Studios announced a multiyear exclusive overall television and first-look film deal with Critical Role.
The deal will see the studio and streamer further investing in animated series — on the heels of its success with...

“We did that! We did that, right?” The quote, from the first season of The Legend of Vox Machina, could sum up the character of Keyleth The Air Ashari (voiced by Marisha Ray) in a nutshell. Despite being powerful and determined, Keyleth is never one to bust into a situation with confidence and arrogance; in fact, her biggest struggle with herself and within the group known as Vox Machina is self-doubt and insecurity. We see it when the group defeats big dragons and monsters, being surprised that her spells and ideas actually worked. We see it when she tries to insert herself into friendly interactions, only to face awkwardness for not reading the room correctly. Keyleth’s anxieties — the crux of which, Ray revealed in an interview a few years ago, were somewhat related to her own personal feelings when she sat down to play Dungeons & Dragons with established...

Roleplaying Games are having a moment right now. We've got a very silly and fun-looking "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" movie on the horizon that seems to embrace all the absurdities and wild swings a typical campaign brings to basic stories of plundering and battle and then there are the folks at Critical Role who have long had a deal with Amazon that just got significantly better.
If you're not familiar with "Critical Role," it's a web series that has a fun group of people gathering together to play out multi-year "Dungeons and Dragons" campaigns.
In January of 2022, Amazon released an animated adaptation of their first big campaign "The Legend of Vox Machina" and today we found out thanks to the good folks at Variety that Amazon is all-in with "Critical Role" and will be developing a new series based on another campaign they did called, "The Mighty Nein,...
