Back in 1983, legendary producer Roger Corman brought the world a sword and sorcery film with an awesome title: Deathstalker. It was so successful, it paved the way for three sequels: Deathstalker II: Duel of the Titans (1987), Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell (1988), and Deathstalker IV: Match of the Titans (1991). The franchise went dormant for more than thirty years, but earlier this year we learned that it’s being revived by filmmaker Steven Kostanski – whose previous credits include Manborg, Father’s Day, The Void, Leprechaun Returns, Psycho Goreman, and episodes of the short-lived Day of the Dead TV series. Kostanski is writing and directing a Deathstalker remake that has Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick) on board to play the title character… and today, Variety has unveiled the first official image of Bernhardt in character! You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Raven Banner Entertainment will launch international sales at the Cannes Film Market for Steven Kostanski’s latest feature “Frankie Freako.”
Kostanski’s previous feature “Psycho Goreman” premiered at SXSW in 2020 and gathered a cult following worldwide. Reviewing the film for Variety, critic Owen Gleiberman described the film as “‘The Toxic Avenger’ remade by the Robert Rodriguez of ‘Spy Kids.'”
“Frankie Freako” is described by Raven Banner as Kostanki’s homage to the practical-fx-driven monster horror-comedies of the 1980s like “Gremlins 2” and “Ghoulies 3: Ghoulies Go to College.” It tells the story of workaholic yuppie Conor Sweeney whose perfect life is turned upside down when he accidentally unleashes a trio of tiny trouble-makers into his home, led by the maniacal rock-n-roll party monster Frankie Freako. It’s a race against time as Conor must defeat the trio and clean up their trail of destruction before his wife returns from her weekend work trip,...

Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford's "The Last Video Store" is more than a midnighter ode to mom-and-pop rental shops where countless cinefreaks found their calling. It's a meta-horror blast of nostalgia about how loving movies can be both a blessing and a curse. Kennedy and Rutherford told my Fantastic Fest audience their production is held together with duct tape and passion — which is unmistakably evident in both cases. "The Last Video Store" isn't the sharpest horror genre satire, nor the prettiest pumpkin in the patch, but there's a scrappiness to classic genre homages that makes this a treat for cult film lovers everywhere.

The 1983 cult sword-and-sorcery movie Deathstalker produced by Roger Corman is getting resurrected, this time as a 21st century comic book.
Guns N’ Roses rocker Slash and Vault Comics have teamed up for the comic, which will also have involvement from Shout! Studios, the owner of the rights to the Corman library, and Raven Banner Entertainment.
Tim Seeley, best known for his work as the co-creator of horror comic Hack/Slash and DC’s Grayson, is writing the comic, with Jim Terry handling art. The duo previously teamed for West of Sundown, a Western vampire comic from Vault. Steven Kostanski, the creature effects artist and filmmaker who has directed segments for the V/H/S and ABCs of Death movies as well as horror flicks such as Psycho Goreman, wrote the story for what is being described as a reimagining.

It seems as though Psycho Goreman isn’t the only hunky boy in filmmaker Steven Kostanski‘s cinematic universe; Variety reports horror comedy Frankie Freako is on the way.
While Psycho Goreman introduced writer/director Kostanski’s take on ’90s tokusatsu, centered around an intergalactic conquerer, Frankie Freako will unleash a maniacal rock-n-roll party monster.
Frankie Freako stars Conor Sweeney as he accidentally lets loose “a trio of tiny trouble-makers into his home, led by the maniacal rock-n-roll party monster Frankie Freako. It’s a race against time as Conor must defeat the rambunctious ruffians and clean up their trail of destruction before his wife returns from her weekend work trip, all while going on an unexpected journey of self-discovery.”
Adam Brooks (Psycho Goreman) and Kristy Wordsworth star alongside Sweeney.
Production has wrapped on the project, with Shout! Studios acquiring U.S. distribution rights. In other words, no release date has been set just yet,...

Welp, 2021 was certainly a year. There was a lot of good (Movies! TV! Books! Random Horror Awesomeness!) and a lot of bad (pretty much everything else), but we made it to 2022, and I am excited for all that’s to come in the next 12 months (at least when it comes to stuff going on in horror). Over the course of last year, I think formally reviewed over 60 films, did interviews for at least 20 other projects beyond those reviewed films, relaunched Indie Horror Month in April, and even did a ton of other features and articles on Daily Dead as well.
Suffice to say, 2021 was pretty darned busy for me on the writing front and because there was so much content that I absolutely adored, I decided that for my favorites list this time around, I wanted to do things a bit differently because if I dive into every single thing...

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into Death Valley. On the one hand writer/director Matthew Ninaber also wrote and directed the underwhelming Transference and Extraction Day. On the other hand, he was the guy inside the suit of the titular creature in one of my favourite films of the year, Psycho Goreman. So he should know a thing or two about making a practical monster movie, right?
Death Valley opens, not in the California desert as you might expect, somewhere in Eastern Europe as an unknown man flees an underground research facility going into lockdown. This leaves Dr. Chloe (Kristen Kaster) trapped inside. She sends out a distress call and grabs a fire axe to deal with whatever it is that we hear in the darkness.

Can you ever really go home? Millions of cinephiles are likely asking themselves this as summer 2021 winds down with doubt again lingering over their favorite movie houses. For a time, theaters were once again open for big business in the U.S. and UK, and remain so in at least one of those venues. But box office reports paint an ambiguous future, and many casual moviegoers clearly remain reluctant about returning to the cinema.
Nonetheless, it’s still good to be back in those old familiar places, as well as to have an ever expanding list of options to discover on streaming. Compared to last year, 2021 feels like a sunny balm, particularly now that the heaviest hitters and biggest surprises of July and the dog days of summer have landed.

Take one extremely cool monster, add a dash of nostalgic humor and creepy fun, sprinkle it with some really fun characters, and mix well in a bucket of gore and practical effects, and you’ve got a recipe for a real horror treat! Which is exactly what PG: Psycho Goreman is—a treat. A treat, a joy, a pleasure, and many other positive adjectives. PG: Psycho Goreman is ridiculously charming and taps into everything that is fun about the horror genre.
Psycho Goreman is written and directed by Steven Kostanski and stars Nita-Josee Hanna, Owen Myre, Adam Brooks, Alexis Hancey, and Matthew Ninaber. In PG: Psycho Goreman, two siblings unwittingly resurrect an ancient alien overlord that has been entombed on Earth for millions of years. The pair nickname the evil force Psycho Goreman and use a magical amulet to control their newfound “friend” and force him to obey their every command—shenanigans ensue.

Psycho Goreman is what happens when a ten-year-old absorbs every episode of Power Rangers, a ton of mid-80s Saturday morning cartoons and their older brother’s video nasty collection, downs several bags of skittles and then rattles off everything they can remember in one, long, rainbow-vomit filibuster of stupidly violent fun. It’s an absolute delight.
Writer/Director Steven Kostanski earns his bread and butter as a make-up and prosthetics artist, having plyed his trade on shows like Star Trek Discovery and Hannibal, with his movie CV including Suicide Squad and Crimson Peak. You get the impression he spends his time on those sets fantasising about what he could do with all of those monsters, all of that spare latex, all of that gore, if someone just gave him a camera and the keys to the costume shop. Luckily, every once in a while, someone does. Thus we have Psycho Goreman,...

Psycho Goreman is one of those movies that I was about 90% sure I was going to love even though all I knew about it was its title and a handful of images I had seen online. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed.
The story is as ridiculous as it should be for a film titled Psycho Goreman. Once, long ago, an evil galactic conqueror known as the Archduke of Nightmares was struck down by an alliance of heroes who hoped to end his reign of terror forever. Buried on a far off world, it seemed that he had finally been defeated. Life was evolving on that world, however, and millions of years later his grave would become the back garden in which young Mimi (Nita-Josee Hanna) and her brother Luke (Owen Myre) play complicated ball games. When they dig a hole and unearth this monstrous being, the galaxy seems doomed - but Mimi finds the jewel that lets her command him, and sets out to have some fun.
Psycho Goreman is not a film made to suit all tastes, but it's brilliantly written and constructed, and if it hits the spot for you, very few films will be able to compete. This is not another tedious spoof.

Exclusive: AMC Networks’ Rlje Films has taken North American rights to the Elijah Wood and Luke Kirby dramatic thriller No Man of God, based on real transcripts and conversations between serial killer Ted Bundy and FBI agent Bill Hagmaier. The deal for the Amber Sealey-directed feature went down ahead of the pic’s Tribeca Film Festival premiere in June. The pic is now scheduled to hit theaters in August.
In 1980, Bundy (Kirby) was sentenced to death by electrocution. In the years that followed, he agreed to disclose the details of his crimes, but only to one man, that being Hagmaier (Wood). Aleksa Palladino and Robert Patrick also star in the Kit Lesser-scripted feature.
No Man of God was produced by Wood, Daniel Noah, Lisa Whalen and Kim Sherman. Ward and Jess De Leo of Rlje Films negotiated the deal with Whalen and Stacy Jorgensen on behalf of Company X/SpectreVision and the filmmakers.

We've appreciated Plastic Meatball's work with Canadian horror comedy PG Psycho Goreman recently. When they came to us with today's news about their new project, working on new action figures for one of the greatest horror franchises of all time we knew we had to share the news with you. Together with popular clothing company Fright Rags, and in partnership with Compass International Pictures, Plastic Meatball announced that they are making Halloween action figures based on Laurie Strode, Lynda Van der Klok and Michael Myers himself. This is the first wave of figures to be made with the idea that this is what fans of the original film would have been able to buy off of store shelves back in 1978 had there been...

We are halfway through April, enjoying everything that our friends at Shudder have brought to us so far in the halfway to Halloween month. With our daytimers already marked for the remaining releases this month it's time to skip ahead a few pages and start checking off the month of May. What's a 'daytimer', old man? Moving along. There's a lot to choose from next month. Of the big additions to the lineup we already announced the other day that Canadian horror comedy PG Psycho Goreman will begin streaming on Shudder next month. Counter to that film's funny side of gore is Brazilian horror Skull: The Mask which also has a tremendous amount of practical gore effects as well, albeit leaning towards a...

It’s rare that a horror-comedy film gets the attention it deserves. At least, not around the time that it’s released. Even the great ones tend to be labeled a “cult classic” later on, but mastering the genre can regularly lead to bigger things. We see that happen as often as we do because horror and comedy are deceptively hard to balance, and it stands to reason that if you could pull off that balancing act once, you might be able do it again combining other genres.
Steve Kostanski has been in the movie business for the better part of two decades, mostly working behind the scenes in creature and makeup effects, but this very much feels like Kostanski’s “time” thanks to his latest movie, Psycho Goreman.

In PG: Psycho Goreman, siblings Mimi and Luke unwittingly resurrect an ancient alien overlord who was entombed on Earth millions of years ago after a failed attempt to destroy the universe. They nickname the evil creature Psycho Goreman (or PG for short) and use the magical amulet they discovered to force him to obey their childish whims. The specialty box office found some shine this weekend with four new titles starting with the Gravitas Ventures pic Our Friend starring Jason Segel, Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson.
The Gabriela Cowperthwaite-directed drama based on Matthew Teague’s book The Friend: Love Is Not a Big Enough Word debuted at 543 locations and grossed an estimated $250K on its first weekend out with a per-screen average $460. This bodes well for the drama which currently sits at an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and has thrown its hat in the ring for awards season.
The film separated itself from a typical day and date release as Gravitas used a focused and targeted exhibitor marketing approach. Outside of Wonder Woman 1984, which was an SVOD release, Our Friend debuted as the largest opening for a day and date film since October 16. It looks to expand next weekend to approximately 750 locations.

As a veteran in the world of special effects makeup, Steven Kostanski (who contributed to projects like It (2017), Crimson Peak, Pacific Rim, Resident Evil: Retribution, and more) knows exactly how important great effects are in the world of genre cinema. That much is evident from his previous directorial efforts like Manborg, Leprechaun Returns, and The Void. It’s also a huge component of his latest film project, PG: Psycho Goreman, which features a ruthless demonic overlord brought to life by actor Matthew Ninaber.
Daily Dead recently caught up with Kostanski, and he discussed the inspiration behind both the story and the character of Psycho Goreman, the design process of the film’s titular character, and more. Look for PG: Psycho Goreman in select theaters and on various digital and On Demand platforms starting today, courtesy of Rlje Films.

With the Sundance Film Festival less than a week away (and available to anyone in the U.S. willing to buy tickets to a Covid-safe 2021 virtual edition), late January sees more streaming options than virtually any week since the pandemic began. That doesn’t necessarily mean big movies for home viewers, but at least it offers a raft of new options.
For those seeking diversion with familiar faces, genre movies such as “Brothers by Blood” (featuring Matthias Schoenaerts and Joel Kinnaman), “No Man’s Land” (with George Lopez) and “Born a Champion” (starring Sean Patrick Flanery). Jason Segel plays a family friend who helps a couple (played by Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson) through the ugliness of cancer in “Our Friend,” based on a true story. If that sounds too serious, try “Psycho Goreman,” in which resourceful low-budget horror director Steven Kostanski makes a deliberately schlocky family film.

One of the trends of our time is the way that extreme culture can wind up turning into kiddie culture. Head-banging metal that was once the down-and-dirty province of those in their teens and twenties had evolved, by the time of “School of Rock,” into a grade-school activity as wholesome as choir practice. “Psycho Goreman,” written and directed by Steven Kostanski, offers a variation on the same phenomenon. In spirit if not in fact, it’s a Troma film — in this case, a gonzo absurdist intergalactic sci-fi horror comedy that flaunts the gory ingenuity of its no-budget analog effects, along with a lot of so-broad-it’s-camp acting. “Psycho Goreman” wants to bring back those heady Troma fumes. But this one, quite knowingly, is like “The Toxic Avenger” remade by the Robert Rodriguez of “Spy Kids.”

The Canadian horror comedy Psycho Goreman from Steve Kostanski is coming back home next month. While the how remains an uncertainty, what with more lockdowns and stricter measures coming to stem the current tide of the pandemic, we do know the when. If Psycho Goreman were to play in cinemas it would have been on January 22nd and it would have been at a lot of cinemas across the country. More than I've ever seen for a indie genre film release in recent memory. "The kind of genre cinema we dream of." Rlje Films has debuted a new official trailer for the upcoming VOD release of a wacky horror sci-fi comedy titled Psycho Goreman. We featured a teaser trailer earlier in the year before the film's originally planned premiere at SXSW (before the fest was cancelled). This is the latest film from Canadian filmmaker / SFX artist Steven Kostanski (who most recently made The Void) and it instead premiered at Monster Fest and the Sitges Film Festival this year. PG, or Psycho Goreman, is about two kids who, using a magical amulet, force the evil monster who showed up to obey their childish whims, and accidentally attract a rogues' gallery of intergalactic assassins to small-town suburbia. Starring Nita-Josée Hanna, Owen Myre, Adam Brooks, Alexis Hancey, and Matthew Ninaber as PG. This looks ridiculously awesome and totally kooky and I am so looking forward to it.
