After enduring any number of paid celebrity vacations disguised as feature films, it’s edifying to learn that a cast and crew can have a great journey and make a worthwhile film at the same time, as Steven Soderbergh and an impressive ensemble have done with “Let Them All Talk,” filmed almost entirely during a real transatlantic, New York-to-Southampton crossing on the Queen Mary 2.
You won’t begrudge Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen, Dianne Wiest, Gemma Chan and Lucas Hedges getting an ocean voyage out of the deal, since this comedy-drama about a blocked novelist having an awkward reunion with old friends is such a witty exploration of relationships and of the responsibility artists have to their muses. It’s “Wild Strawberries” for women of a certain age, and a big improvement over Soderbergh and Streep’s previous collaboration, the disjointed “The Laundromat.”

Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit dramatizes the unprecedented rise of (fictional) chess prodigy Elizabeth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) through the grandmaster ranks of chess champions in the 1950s and ‘60s. But as with other prestige television series, there is a dark side to this savant’s talents: While she possesses a natural affinity for complex and creative chess moves, Beth is also constrained by her growing drug addiction, which she believes allows her to prevail in so many harrowing chess matches.
Even before she touches a pawn for the first time, these little green tranquilizer pills define Beth’s life and her value, from her very first day at a Kentucky orphanage. But are the pills in The Queen’s Gambit real, or a TV construct? Like Beth’s story, the pills—called Xanzolam in the series—are a historical fiction, drawing upon...

Exclusive: Netflix has acquired rights to a pitch from Ben Queen that is loosely based on the novel A Note of Explanation, to be adapted by Queen into a feature film.
A Note of Explanation, a previously unknown work by famed writer Vita Sackville-West and written in 1922, was recently rediscovered as a miniature book in Queen Mary’s dollhouse in Windsor Castle, and tells the story of a time-travelling sprite who inhabits the dollhouse.
Liza Chasin will produce for 3dot Production under her overall deal with Netflix. 3dot’s Margaret Chernin will oversee for the company.
Queen is currently writing The Addams Family sequel for MGM and Long Distance for Netflix with Aggregate attached to produce. He is also co-writing a pilot with Rashida Jones and Will McCormack for MRC. Previously, he wrote Cars 2 and Cars 3 for Pixar and created the TV series A to Z at NBC.

Alma Har’el was one of the most vocal directors to speak out after the Golden Globes shut out women in the Best Director race, and now she’s written a guest post for Entertainment Weekly in reaction to the Oscars similarly shutting out female filmmakers for Best Director. The Academy Award nominees in 2020 are Martin Scorsese (“The Irishman”), Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), Todd Phillips (“Joker”), Sam Mendes (“1917”), and Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”).
Har’el writes it’s time to consider creating a new Oscars directing category to ensure greater inclusivity, pointing to ceremonies such as the Indie Spirit Awards, the Hollywood Critics Awards, and the Directors Guild of America awards that all give out a Best First Feature prize. Har’el is nominated for the DGA Best First Feature prize this year for “Honey Boy.”

“Schwing!” Though it’s been nearly 30 years since the Wayne’s World movie first came out in 1992, according to actress Tia Carrere, who played the rock goddess Cassandra in the film, people still love to shout familiar Wayne’s World catchphrases at her.
“Daily might be a stretch, but it’s often,” says Carrere, 53, who’s now starring as the villainous Lady Danger in the Netflix series Aj and the Queen. “I think it’s just because that movie coined so many popular catchphrases that are still used today.”

During the TCA session for Bet’s forthcoming Twenties show creator and writer was joined by fellow executive producer Susan Fales-Hill as well as actors Jonica T. Gibbs, Christina Elmore and Gabrielle Graham to talk about the half-hour comedy that follows a queer black girl Hattie (Gibbs) who is navigating her 20s with her two straight best friends. The series marks one of the first times we have seen a queer woman of color lead a Bet series — a series that echos Waithe’s own journey.
Being queer and a person of color — specifically black — brings a lot of questions about acceptance from your own community. For Waithe, she said that she didn’t necessarily have that problem. “Black people love me,” she smiles. “There are some that are still mad at me about Queen & Slim though.”

Exclusive: A documentary about the problematic legacy of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge told through the perspective of its then-closeted gay star Mark Patton has been acquired by Virgil Films & Entertainment.
Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street recounts Patton’s difficulties making the 1985 horror sequel, which put him through a range of salacious on-screen ordeals designed to whet the homophobic appetites (conscious or otherwise) of 1980s audiences. Directed by Jack Sholder and written by Scott Chaskin based on Wes Craven’s characters, the film was shot for just a few million dollars but grossed $30 million, extending what would become a half-billion-dollar global franchise.
Critics largely dismissed Freddy’s Revenge, but in the decades since, the film’s unique status as an unintended cultural artifact has made it something of a cult classic. The Advocate has described it as “the gayest horror film ever made.”

When RuPaul and Michael Patrick King first began working together, they were pleasantly surprised to find they both had strong feelings for Preston Sturges’ 1941 feature film “Sullivan’s Travels” — so much so that it became an influence on their Netflix dramedy “Aj and the Queen” for both character and tone.
“Everybody thinks that to make a real impact in this world it has to be this [Martin] Scorsese dark, Oliver Stone, ‘This is an important film!'” RuPaul tells Variety. But, “the premise of ‘Sullivan’s Travels’ is laughter is the biggest spell you can cast; it has the widest net and the biggest impact. And understanding that — getting to that place — is such an evolved, zen destination.”

The revered film director vowed never to touch theatre. So why is he staging the great Aids epic Angels in America? Apparently, it’s all a misunderstanding
Arnaud Desplechin looks surprisingly calm as he excuses himself to listen to a voicemail from the Comédie-Française’s technical team. France is one week into a general strike over pension reform and the country’s premier theatre company has followed suit, resulting in cancelled performances and rehearsals. “We take it day by day,” says Desplechin, whose new production of Angels in America is due to open in mid-January. “It will start to get difficult if it continues.” We spoke in December and the strike is still going strong, but there is no plan to delay.
It doesn’t help that Tony Kushner’s sprawling 1990s play about the Aids crisis is only Desplechin’s second theatre project, his first being a 2015 version of August Strindberg’s Father.

Greta Gerwig’s screenwriting style starts in the middle and fans out.
“I don’t write in a straight line,” admits the “Little Women” writer-director. “It’s like a quilt I try to stitch together.”
But one piece was more important than the others: the opening scene.
“Getting the opening just right was so important,” says Gerwig. “When I had it, I thought, ‘There’s a movie here.’ I knew I could make that movie.”
Direction, performances and technical details are all critical to a film, but it’s the opening scene that sells the picture — or sinks it. And every writer has a different approach to start telling their stories.
Early on, “Queen & Slim” began with the execution of Queen’s client, recalls screenwriter Lena Waithe. “I thought, ‘I have to show that, so when she shows up on her date you know this won’t go well.’” Instead,...
