While film awards have mostly been steady as they go, despite the WGA and SAG strikes last year, the TV awards timeline has been tied in absolute knots to the point where one deserves an award for even being able to guess which season of a show is in contention.
Normally, an announcement like the 2024 WGA Awards nominations would let us know what new shows are likely to become the next class of Emmy contenders. This year, what sticks out more are the nominees whose awards runs are still chugging along a year after their premieres. All the nominees in the New Series category — “The Diplomat,” “Jury Duty,” “The Last of Us,” “Poker Face,” and “Shrinking” — are for TV seasons that have already just finished their Emmy runs. Because the WGA Awards go by calendar year, rather than the traditional TV schedule, their nominations create one more awards stop on...

“Don’t breathe. Don’t look back,” commanded the tagline for the movie Twister from 1996. Apparently, that’s not a warning that Universal Pictures wants to heed. Instead, they’re looking back to the ’90s with a new adventure about storm chasers and the flying cows in their wake with the upcoming sequel Twisters.
That said, first trailer for Twisters features no familiar faces. Not only do we see no characters played by actors who sadly passed in the interim, such as Bill Paxton’s Bill or Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Rusty, but also missing is Helen Hunt’s protagonist Jo.
In their place is a new cast, primarily Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing) as Kate Cooper and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) as Tyler Owens. Based on the trailer, the script by Mark L. Smith focuses on the braggart Tyler luring Kate back into the world of stormchasing after an expedition gone wrong.

Author Mary Shelley has inspired horror creators since the 1800s, but never like Lisa Frankenstein. Zelda Williams brings Diablo Cody's undead teen romance to life like the second coming of early Tim Burton, harvesting an uncanny gothic romance from spare human parts. It's caught somewhere between Riverdale, Edward Scissorhands, and Warm Bodies, a good crossroads to call home. Williams and Cody inject surges of teen girl empowerment through their morbidly adorable Frankenstein tale, which can feel like a hammy 1980s sitcom, yet transcends expectations with an avalanche of campy, almost wall-breaking silliness.
Kathryn Newton shines as the horror-loving Lisa Swallows, a high school recluse who rarely speaks after the axe murder of her mother. Lisa now lives as a black sheep with her cheerleader stepsister "Taffy" (Liza Soberano), high-strung stepmother Janet (Carla Gugino), and easygoing father Dale (Joe Chrest). Taffy tries to help socialize her squirrely new sibling, but...

We’ve seen Groundhog’s Day as a slasher with Happy Death Day, It’s a Wonderful Life as a slasher with It’s a Wonderful Knife, Freaky Friday as a slasher with Freaky, and Back to the Future as a slasher with Totally Killer. Next in the “this movie, but it’s a slasher” line-up is Departing Seniors, which mixes the high school slasher set-up with elements from Stephen King’s The Dead Zone. Dark Sky Films will be giving Departing Seniors a limited theatrical and VOD release on February 2nd, and with that date right around the corner a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
One of the problems of the award season industrial complex that takes over film discourse in the early months of the year is that it tends to reduce great films to talking points. It also encourages groupthink, even if some of the nominated films are, well, deserving of those nominations. There’s the predictable pattern of acclaim, backlash, backlash to the backlash, and then maybe a few awards and the hopes of a short memory about how the awards campaign went.
Thus, creating a top-ten is always a bit tough. It’s a mixture of subjective and objective critiques, personal preferences mixed with universally regarded favorites. With that, there’s been more than enough written about Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Barbie, The Holdovers, etc. that...

First off, it wouldn’t be an incredible year if I didn’t have a ton of honorable mentions. The state of horror in 2023 is strong. Familiar names such as Brandon Cronenberg and Eli Roth returned with "Infinity Pool" and "Thanksgiving" and so did "Re-Animator" screenwriter Dennis Paoli, writer of "Suitable Flesh," his first realized feature script in over 20 years. Old franchises returned, too, with "Evil Dead Rise" and even "Saw X" doing well critically and commercially. Less established filmmakers have also made an impression, namely Nahnatchka Khan, director of "Totally Killer," and Danish debut filmmaker Gabriel Bier Gislason, who helmed "Attachment."
But away from "M3GAN," "When Evil Lurks" and the numerous other highlights, there were still some disappointments that were lackluster, recycled, underplayed, overplayed, or in one or two cases, just underwhelming in almost every aspect of production. There is little pleasure to be had in chronicling such disappointment, but it is a service any critic must provide at one time or another. So let's dig into some...

The story of horror movies in 2023 is one of extreme ends, with the most out-there experiments flourishing while more standard genre fare fell flat. There was no terrifying instant classic destined to be rewatched at Halloween parties for years to come, in the way that “Barbarian” and “Hereditary” emerged in past years. But several long-running franchises like “Scream” and “Saw” put out well-received sequels that provided shots of adrenaline to decades-old I.P. — while the freshly adapted and distinctly mediocre “Five Nights at Freddy’s” dropped jaws at the box office. And indie horror continued to flourish, with breakout hits like “Skinamarink” proving that it’s still possible to shock audiences with nonexistent budgets.
Still, the real horror breakouts of 2023 were the comedies and the auteur-driven dramas that just happened to scare us. Satires such as “The Blackening” and “Totally Killer” lampooned tired horror genre tropes, while goofier standalone films like...

Aliens are hot right now – don’t miss Hulu’s No One Will Save You, for starters! – and writers David Matalon (Totally Killer) and Matthew Altman (Feed the Devil) just sold their own take on the sub-genre. Deadline reports today that The Hideaway Entertainment has acquired the rights to a “high concept” spec script from the duo, which is titled Level Up.
The project is being described as “a sci-fi action comedy.”
Deadline details, “Level Up is about a man who wakes up bound and blindfolded in a top-secret facility deep beneath Area 51, soon discovering that he has amazing but inexplicable new abilities. His only hope to escape is the alien he’s imprisoned with… and she hates humans.
“But as they navigate their way out, their unconventional alliance becomes the key to saving the world from an impending global catastrophe.”

Plot: A year after stopping a masked slasher’s killing spree, a teen girl wishes she had never been born. As a result, she gets a glimpse into a world where she never existed – and the killer is still slashing their way through her hometown.

Now they have teamed up to bring us It’s a Wonderful Knife, a film that follows the current trend of giving slasher movies a high concept twist. Happy Death Day was a time loop slasher, Totally Killer was a time travel slasher, Freaky was a body swap slasher. After kicking off our month-long theme on toxic masculinity with difficult watches like Funny Games (listen) and Deadgirl (listen), we’re slowing things down a bit this week with Barbet Schroeder‘s 2002 Leopold and Loeb adaptation (of sorts) Murder By Numbers.
In Murder By Numbers, two gifted high school students named Richard and Justin execute a “perfect” murder – then become engaged in an intellectual contest with seasoned homicide detective Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock). After a limited theatrical release, “The Killer” made its streaming debut on Netflix on Nov. 10, quickly becoming the top film on the platform. The action thriller is based on a French graphic novel series of the same name and stars Michael Fassbender in the eponymous role of the killer, a professional assassin who misses his mark and accidentally kills the wrong target, becoming a target himself.
David Fincher, a prolific filmmaker known for his work on psychological thrillers, including “Seven” and “Fight Club,” directs the film. Work on the project began as far back as 2007, when the news broke that Fincher would be developing a film adaption of the comic book series with Paramount Pictures distributing. Over a decade later, it was reported that Netflix had picked it up as part of a larger deal with the filmmaker.
“The Killer” has received a predominantly positive reception among critics, but slightly more lukewarm reviews among audiences.

“It’s the ’80s, do a lot of coke and vote for Ronald Regan!” That song may be an all-time classic Mystery Science Theater 3000 riff from the Gremlins rip-off Hobgoblins, but one might find themselves also singing that ditty more and more often when watching TV and movies.
Stranger Things, Totally Killer, It, and even parts of Loki’s second season take us back to the 1980s, filling the screen with neon clothes, Dungeons & Dragons references, and so much punk and synth-pop.
It’s easy to see why the ’80s would get attention in the past decade, as kids of that era have grown to be the adults with buying power (such as it is) and control over media franchises. However, ’80s nostalgia has become bankrupt even quicker than previous versions, precisely because of its thin and disinterested look at the target decade.

Michael Kennedy is a massive fan of the Scream franchise, and in recent years he has had the opportunity to write some of his own slasher movies. First was the body swap slasher Freaky, which was directed by Christopher Landon. Coming to theatres this Friday, November 10th, is the “It’s a Wonderful Life with a masked maniac” slasher It’s a Wonderful Knife… and while Kennedy was working with director Tyler MacIntyre on It’s a Wonderful Knife, his friend and Freaky collaborator Christopher Landon secured the job of directing Scream 7 – which has led some fans to speculate that Kennedy might end up working on the Scream 7 script. The speculation picked up steam when Kennedy shared a picture of him sharing a meal with Landon and Scream (2022) and Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. But during a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Kennedy said he...

Silly Americans…
After concluding spooky season with a reappraisal of Rob Zombie’s Halloween II (the Director’s Cut), we’re moving into November by kicking off a new theme of episodes on toxic masculinity. First up is Michael Haneke‘s fourth wall-breaking film Funny Games!
In Funny Games, Anna (Susanne Lothar) and Georg (Ulrich Mühe) and their son Georgie (Stefan Clapczynski) visit their idyllic lakeside vacation home, only to be terrorized by Paul (Arno Frisch) and Peter (Frank Giering), a pair of deeply disturbed young men. Paul and Peter take the family hostage and subject them to the titular “funny games,” which doubles as a critique of (American) viewers themselves.

Horror fans have been blessed with a bold new generation of Scream Queens, from “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega to Mia Goth of “X” and “Pearl,” to “Yellowjackets” stars Jasmin Savoy Brown and Sophie Thatcher, not to mention the women of “Fear Street,” Stranger Things” and Mike Flanagan’s deliciously spooky “Haunting of…” Netflix series.

October has been a pretty exciting month: we celebrated our 250th episode of the podcast with Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, then tackled one of Jason Voorhees’ best entries with Friday the 13th Part 2 before getting real serious with Bryan Singer’s Apt Pupil.
We’re closing out the month with a seasonally appropriate film: Rob Zombie‘s 2009 return to the Halloween franchise, Halloween II. Important note of distinction, however, we’re talking about the Unrated Director’s Cut.
In the film, it’s been two years since Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton) faced down Michael Myers (Tyler Mane) but she’s still suffering from serious Ptsd. Despite Annie (Danielle Harris) and Sheriff Brackett’s (Brad Dourif) claims that she’s safe, Laurie is spiraling as Halloween approaches.
Not helping matters is Dr. Sam Loomis (Malcolm McDowell), who has written an insensitive new book about the murders. As Michael returns to finish what he began,...

The man who made "True Detective" is now going to make a horror movie with the industry's premier producer of horror movies. Nic Pizzolatto has revealed that he has been contracted to write and direct a film for Blumhouse Productions, the studio behind hits such as "The Purge," "The Black Phone," and the current reigning box office champ "Five Nights at Freddy's" among many, many others. Depending on how things shake out, this could wind up serving as Pizzolatto's feature directorial debut. However, that is not set in stone at this stage.
I attended a panel that Pizzolatto spoke at during this year's Austin Film Festival. During the panel, the filmmaker best known for creating HBO's hit anthology series "True Detective" revealed that he's set to make "an occult detective story" for Blumhouse, for which he's already written the script. Just in time for spooky season, a Bill Gates-backed company has launched AI-driven Pix as “the world’s first personal entertainment companion.”
Pix hails from Likewise, which launched in 2018 and combines real-time personal preference data with AI tech to allow users to curate entertainment recommendations. It has more than 6 million registered users, which has created a data set of 600 million preferences. Pix pulls from those consumer datapoints and uses OpenAI tech to form its responses.
Users can ask Pix for recommendations or to answer questions via text message, email, mobile app, or its website. It can’t summarize a movie or book, by design, but when it comes to finding content to stream there aren’t many limitations.
The home page currently offers a Halloween-related suggested prompt: “Send me some scary movies on Prime or Hulu. No slashers please.” It gives 10 recommendations with a one-sentence description, including Totally Killer,...

Since its official release on Prime Video on October 6, 2023, Totally Killer has enjoyed positive reviews from critics and audiences. While its story may not feel original, given the genre it is based on, its plot would undoubtedly keep audiences glued to the end. Directed by Nahnatchka Khan, Totally Killer is a black comedy slasher film that features and takes jabs at slasher tropes. Although several scenes may seem predictable, viewers can expect amusing one-liners throughout the movie’s runtime. Totally Killer is set in the small town of Vernon. Plot: A brilliant but tightly wound, gameshow-obsessed young woman, Anne, and her estranged, train-wreck of a sister Jenny, must work together to help cover their mother’s gambling debts. When Anne’s beloved dog is kidnapped, they set out on a wild, cross-country trek to get the cash the only way they know how: by turning Anne into a bona-fide gameshow champion.
Review: I love quiz shows. I also love movies and series about quiz shows. Whether it be Robert Redford’s acclaimed Quiz Show, the subplot in Magnolia, or the long-running SNL sketch spoofing Celebrity Jeopardy, something is fascinating about trivia challenges and the people who participate in them. The new Hulu original Quiz Lady takes that concept and adds elements of various comedies, including road trips, raunchy humor, family dysfunction, and more. The result is a far more nuanced film than the trailers present, but one that is absolutely focused on being funny.

'Totally Killer' offered cinematographer Judd Overton plenty of challenges; the mash between horror and comedy, the need to create two distinctive looks for the film's time periods, 1987 and 2023, and the chance to create 360-degree rotating shots inside a real gravitron.

The Mandela Effect.
After dedicating an entire month to Erotic Thrillers like Bound and Stranger by the Lake, October has been blissfully fun and silly. Last week, we celebrated our 250th (!!!) episode last week with Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow. This week we paid homage to Jason Voorhees with a look at one of Friday the 13th title: Part 2!
In the sequel to Sean S. Cunningham‘s game changer, poor Alice (Adrienne King) is brutally killed off immediately. After a five-year-jump, a new group of horny counsellors prepare to open Camp Blood. These red shirts include iconic Final Girl Ginny (Amy Steel), her sad sack boyfriend Paul (John Furey), as well as hot and fit Terry (Kirsten Baker) and pervy Scott (Russell Todd). And then there’s poor sweet Vickie (Lauren-Marie Taylor) and disabled Mark (Tom McBride).

"Our goal is scary and original," Jason Blum said of Blumhouse at New York Comic Con 2023. "Even when we're doing IP or sequels, we always try to do something new."
Blum is a curator of the bloodcurdling, often with a dash of comedic rib-cracking. After all, he told his fans that "comedy and horror are cousins in many ways." The timing of a scare is linked to the timing of a joke. His producing credits include the likes of "M3GAN" and the "Halloween" trilogy. With that in mind, a house of horror-heads gathered at New York Comic Con's "Blumfest" to splash into more Blum-produced films, from the time travel hijinks of "Totally Killer," an evil swimming pool in "Night Swim," and the highly anticipated video game adaptation "Five Nights at Freddy's." The respective directors for each of these films joined Blum on the stage, with each of them having something...

Jason Blum said during a New York Comic Con panel that the merger of his company, Blumhouse, with James Wan’s Atomic Monster is “very close” to closing.
“It’s not quite done yet,” he said during the Universal Pictures “BlumFest” session. “It’s very close.”
Word first emerged nearly a year ago that the two production entities were in advanced talks to join forces. Each is expected to continue operating its own consumer-facing label. Blumhouse is known for franchises like Paranormal Activity, The Purge, Halloween, Happy Death Day, Ouija, Unfriended, The Exorcist and Sinister. Atomic Monster, meanwhile, controls The Conjuring, Insidious and Saw. The companies have collectively grossed more than $11.6 billion worldwide since 2004 and they struck gold by teaming up for M3gan earlier this year. Wan, as a director, also made the highest-grossing DC movie ever, Aquaman,
Atomic Monster’s staffers “work differently than us,” Blum observed. “That...

Time is the slasher genre’s ultimate villain. As final girls like Laurie Strode and Sidney Prescott slow down with age, the masked killers who relentlessly pursue them never lose a step. Rather than heal all wounds, time’s inexorable passage wears down the surviving heroes of “Halloween,” “Scream” and other enduring franchises while their injuries (not all of them visible) continue to fester. It was probably inevitable, then, that the genre itself would eventually become as nostalgic as it is — especially as regards the 1980s. “Totally Killer” is hardly the first slasher to fondly recall that decadent decade, but “Always Be My Maybe” director Nahnatchka Khan’s time-traveling crossover takes a more nuanced view of it than most.
Its lore concerns the Sweet Sixteen Killer, who stabbed three 16-year-old girls to death in 1987 before vanishing without being caught. He wore a distinctive mask while knifing the girls 16 times each,...

“This isn’t ‘Back to the Future,'” time-traveling Kiernan Shipka is told in “Totally Killer” — and it definitely isn’t. For one, her teenage mom is decidedly not interested in her when she lands in 1987; the ringleader of a mean girls clique called “The Mollies” (they all love Molly Ringwald), she’s definitely not the nervous mom Shipka’s Jamie knew so well. At least, until the serial killer who stabbed the other three Mollies back in ’87 reappears in 2023, murdering Jamie’s mom and sending Jamie back in time.
As Jamie rushes to prevent the Sweet 16 killer from picking off her mom’s friends, the story toggles back and forth between 1987 and the present day, where her best friend is working to create a new time machine. And director Nahnatchka Khan and cinematographer Judd Overton spoke a lot about keeping the two time periods recognizably separate.
