As expected, Demimonde will not be moving forward at HBO.
The series, which marked the first original created by J.J. Abrams since Fringe in 2008, has officially been passed over by the premium cable network following issues surrounding the show’s sprawling budget.
Sources tell THR that Abrams made a last-ditch plea to HBO/HBO Max boss Casey Bloys to spare the drama from cancellation. Bloys took the week to do so but ultimately the decision was made to part ways with the series for which Abrams had sought a budget north of 200 million. By comparison, HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon clocked in at less than 200 million. Abrams was also slated to direct the pilot for Demimonde, which has already changed showrunners since it landed at HBO in 2018 following a bidding war with Apple.

J.J. Abrams’ ambitious HBO sci-fi drama series Demimonde has hit a major roadblock in its long journey to the screen. The issues, related to the show’s price, come amid talk of a potential reevaluation of the massive deal Abrams’ Bad Robot has at Warner Bros for film, TV, gaming and digital content as the new Warner Bros. Discovery is scrutinizing every aspect of the assets they took over.
Bought by the network four years ago with a straight-to-series order, Demimonde is still in early pre-production, but major budget issues are threatening to derail it. According to sources, the studios on the project, Warner Bros. Television and HBO, have been trying to rein in costs, but Bad Robot has kept firm on their proposed budget, said to be in the mid-200 million range, and would not agree to a reduction below that.

‘Chicago Fire’: Brett Dalton Boards NBC Series In Recurring Role Following Jesse Spencer’s Departure
NBC’s Chicago Fire has added Brett Dalton to the cast in a recurring role on the heels of Jesse Spencer’s departure from the series after 10 seasons, Deadline has confirmed. Dalton will portray interim Lt. Jason Pelham, who will make his debut on Wednesday night’s episode airing at 9 p.m.
Spencer’s character Matt Casey exited in the October 20 episode, the landmark 200th for the celebrated Dick Wolf series. Casey not only left Firehouse 51 but Chicago completely for Oregon, where he will care for Griffin and Ben Darden— sons of Firehouse 51 legend Andy Darden, who died in the series premiere—while their mother is in jail again with another DUI charge. His relationship with Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) will remain long distance for the time being.

HBO Max has decided to pass on “The Shining” spinoff series “Overlook” from J.J. Abrams, TheWrap has learned.
Warner Bros. Television — whose sister film studio Warner Bros. produced Stanley Kubrick’s classic 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Shining” — and Abrams’ Bad Robot will be shopping the series elsewhere in what is considered a competitive situation among other possible platforms. The project had been in development since April 2020 with a series commitment but was not ordered to series by the WarnerMedia-owned streaming service.
Written by Dustin Thomason and Scott Brow, “Overlook” is described as a horror-thriller series “inspired by and featuring iconic characters” from the King novel. The show “explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction.”
Abrams and Bad Robot’s head of television, Ben Stephenson, will executive produce the potential series, with Bad Robot’s EVP of television, Rachel Rusch Rich,...

HBO Max has opted not to proceed with Overlook, the drama project from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Prods. inspired by Stephen King’s The Shining. The company and studio Warner Bros. Television are currently shopping the show, which is expected to land at a new home soon, with Netflix a likely destination, I hear. Reps for Bad Robot, Wbtv and Netflix declined comment.
Overlook was part of the inaugural Bad Robot slate at HBO Max under the company’s mega 2019 deal with WarnerMedia, which was commissioned by the previous regimes at the streamer. While Overlook was announced as a series order at the time, it was actually development with a series commitment, I hear.
