Episode 1.6

So how do you commission artwork from Banksy?

Stephen Merchant must have pulled more strings for Banksy than the ones to get Christopher Walken on to the show.

The final episode of the first series was more action packed. The Outlaws band together to save Christian. Even Diane joins in.

Apart from he is not called Christian and he was doing probation for someone else. There was also his backstory concerning his crack addict mother.

It turns out that Christian was the one who was not a criminal.

This was fun and eventful episode with the main characters almost gelling. John can still be a rat.

Loose ends

Warning: Spoilers
A fun, involving and well made show with a interesting story and great characters. This episode had a lot more action and tension while still be fun.

There seemed to be lots of loose ends which probably don't affect the main story but the lack of resolution makes it feel like the season is one or two episodes short. It looks like there is another season which may tie the loose ends to some more story threads but given the main narrative has a conclusion it would be unusual to continue the supporting stories into a new season.

Season One Review

Still cracking on with the Guardians' top TV of 2022 list and I'm down to "The Outlaws", a show I knew about and meant to get around to but needed this little push to get me to start it. I did, naturally, go back and watch the first season first. Whilst I'm not perhaps quite as high on the show as others have been I thought it was certainly enjoyable enough that I'll watch the second run.

A group of offenders, carrying out community service refurbing a leisure centre, discover a large bag of cash in the roof. Unbeknownst to them, the bag was put there by one of their fellow offenders, Ben (Gamba Cole) a young man who robbed a drug dealer under duress but plans to use the money to get him and his sister out of Bristol. As they decide what to do with the money, the head of the drug dealing operation, 'The Dean' (Claes Bang) start to use his influence to recover it.

Oddly, for me, I think I liked "The Outlaws" more in its lighter moments, than in it's darker ones. Each of the characters has their own personal drama, which is feeds both into the crimes they committed to get here and into their decision to take the money. It's quite cleverly plotted in that way, as the characters occupations and history give them at least an opportunity to get away with it. There is an edge of make-believe to the darker crime elements though. Claes Bang gets to be more of a pantomime gangster, and doesn't actually feature that much, but Charles Babalola plays Christian, who actively runs the gang and though violence is threatened at times, it's never particularly convincing. This is never more evident than in the season's final moments, when a legal situation is sidestepped, but the whole angry drug dealer element is rather glossed over. I assume that'll feature more in the second season though.

It's quite funny, at times, mostly with Stephen Merchant cracking jokes at his own expense. Christopher Walken just has to deliver any line in his usual cadence for it to be amazing. Darren Boyd and Claire Perkins are reliable performers, but the shows heart is with Gamba Cole and Rhianne Barreto, as the young potential couple for whom life keeps getting in the way. I wish perhaps it was just the bit more consistently funny though.

It's finished. NOoooooooooooo!

Oh what a fantastic programme this has been, it is just a shame that it has come to its conclusion. And true to form, this episode was delightful. Drama, suspense, thriller, crime with a dusting of comedy, this has it all. I am just so sad that this is the end. The characters really shone through in this last episode. Again, there was "life lessons" to be learned, there are things to ponder on, sometimes the viewer has to choose "sides", only to find out that there is a better choice that is explained to you. I honestly think that this programme is one of the very best things that the BBC has done for some time now. I really hope that, somehow, the BBC can continue this story. Absolutely loved it, sad it has ended.

This whole series as been excellent from start to finish with excellent writing and the perfect cast. Series 2 can't come around quick enough. One of the best things in recent years and Christopher Walken was a revelation.

Epic ending

Perfect moment when Christoper Walken painted over the Banksy original. A great little series with excellent characterisations, a fun plot, lots of humour and some pertinent politics. Loved the Bristol locations and the pretty accurate accents . . .

Episode #1.6

This series has been amazing but what really did it for me, for this episode in particular was the interrogation scene at the end. Each character had a joke that genuinely made me laugh out loud it was so well done.

The Banksy painted over by Walken was brilliant as well. I liked how the first credit of the credits is Banksy.

Episode 6

Warning: Spoilers
Not a bad finale, but they only really have one character in trouble heading into season 2, and that is the lawyer played by Stephen Merchant. Not sure where they're going to get drama from.

enough with usa slang
eamonnh-8946926 August 2022
Dear god in heaven if you make a show in England, stop using American slang, as young Brits don't refer to the police as "feds" as come on. Decent enough show lost its way in episode 4/5.
