Vladimir Putin’s Run-In With Greenpeace & Paul McCartney To Be Spotlighted In BBC Documentary Series
Exclusive: Vladimir Putin’s 10-year-old battle with a group of Greenpeace protestors that attracted the attention of none other than Paul McCartney is to be spotlighted in a BBC documentary series.
Curve Media’s On Thin Ice: Putin V Greenpeace (working title) is being positioned as the BBC’s latest box-set series and will break with tradition by airing via bitesized half-hour episodes.
The series will follow what happened when a group of climate activists on a daring mission to disrupt Russia’s Arctic oil production unwittingly sailed into a pivotal moment in Putin’s relationship with the West in 2013.
Known as the Arctic 30, the group had wanted to film a protest and discourage an international Arctic oil rush, but they were arrested and incarcerated in a brutal Russian prison. Russian security services had been monitoring their activities and word came from the very top: the protestors would be made...

When big changes come to Doctor Who it’s the Doctor who grabs all the headlines. That, after all, is showbusiness: children don’t ask for bedsheets bedecked with the faces of the show’s writing or production team. It’s the showrunner – much more than anyone else, including the actor playing the lead role – upon whom the fate and fortunes of the show rest. They decide everything from the look, feel and tone of the seasons, to the thrust and arc of the narrative, to who writes, directs and stars – from the smallest bit-part to the Doctor themselves. The buck stops with them, in other words, and a showrunner can very much make or break an era.
So while speculation rages about who will take on the mantle of the 14th Doctor, it’s Chris Chibnall‘s replacement as showrunner who will ultimately carry the weight of the universe on their back.

Guillermo del Toro takes a walk on the noir side in his first film since winning the Oscar for directing the 2017 best picture winner “The Shape of Things.” “Nightmare Alley,’ based on the uncompromising 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham, offers a bleak depiction of humanity including low-rent carnivals filled with has-beens, geeks and “rum-dums.” Searchlight Pictures is giving “Nightmare Alley,” which had to shut down production during the height of Covid in 2020, the “A” treatment, opening the film on Dec. 3 just in time for awards consideration.

The late Kobe Bryant had a lot of successes in life. His 2000 recording of a gangsta rap album wasn’t one of them, but it’s now finally out there for the world to judge.
Bryant, who will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday, recorded the 16-track album, titled Visions, with a host of all-star support. Artists including Nas, 50 Cent, Beanie Segal, Black Thought, and Destiny’s Child appear on the recording.
Unfortunately, the album’s debut single, K.O.B.E. – featuring model and actress Tyra Banks – did not live up to Columbia Records expectations, and the project was quietly dropped without the entire album being released. This after Bryant released the single on the NBA All-Star Weekend, and performed it live at the game.

After touching on financial precarity with “Sorry We Missed You,” social unrest with “Les Miserables” and refugee plight with “Atlantics,” the Cannes Film Festival put current issues on hold and rolled into a weekend full of girls, gangsters and guns.
As soon as the brute force punch of Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Too Old to Die Young” had time to bruise over, the bloody festivities picked right back up for Saturday’s premiere of “The Wild Goose Lake” — a stylish Chinese crime thriller that feels an awful lot like a Refn movie funneled through Middle Kingdom sensibilities.
Or maybe that’s the other way around, because the rap on director Diao Yinan back home is that he’s the most American-minded contemporary Chinese filmmaker… but that could just mean that he likes to play around in genre.

Liu and fellow officers are hunting down a gangster by the name of Zhou (Ge Hu), and the map shows his last known whereabouts: a town in southern China nestled along the Wild Goose Lake. Many of the cops aren’t locals, so the briefing doubles as a warning against the thug and one against the place itself. “Be well aware of the complexity of the lake area,” Liu says of the alien turf: “it’s a lawless place that no-one really controls.” In the sinisterly seductive world of Diao’s fourth feature, the...

When the Nordic entertainment group, one of Scandinavia’s largest media groups, announced last month during the Goteborg Film Festival that it was pulling out of non-scripted content to focus on scripted drama, and film production and distribution, it underscored two market trends in the Nordics: Subscription-based services, whether local or global, are driving the region’s booming drama business, and going forward, the investment into content will be more evenly split between Scandinavia series and movies.
Since Scandinavia is one of the first overseas markets where Netflix and HBO Nordic launched as early as 2012, local streaming services such as Viaplay, CMore and Elisa Viihde reacted fast and stepped up their investment in drama in order to compete. It paid off: Today, unlike in other European regions where local Svod services have either shut down or struggled, the Nordics are home to several powerful local streaming services that are coexisting alongside Netflix and HBO Nordic.

If one is in the mood for some highly-stylized neo-noir, the best option this spring is Diao Yinan’s impressive follow-up to his awarding-winning Black Coal, Thin Ice, titled The Wild Goose Lake. An official selection at Cannes, Tiff, and Nyff, Film Movement will release the film on March 6 beginning at Film Forum in NYC and we’re pleased to share an exclusive clip. As previewed in this scene, which places us in the middle of a chase, the director expertly plays with color and unexpected turns of violence to rethink the crime drama.
The film follows the trajectory of a Chinese small-time mob leader Zhou Zenong (Hu Ge) who accidentally kills a cop, forcing him to avoid the bounty placed on his head from cops and other gangsters hoping to procure the award for themselves.
