All eyes at this year’s Cannes Film Festival will be on the hotly anticipated premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded epic Megalopolis. Laurence Fishburne is part of the ensemble cast and is no stranger to debuting a pricey, high-profile project at Cannes.
In 2003, Fishburne hit the Croisette for the Wachowskis’ action sequel The Matrix Reloaded, in which he reprised his role as Morpheus after originating the character in the 1999 sci-fi smash. Also in attendance was Fishburne’s then-wife Gina Torres, who played Cas in the sequels.
After The Matrix introduced viewers to Neo (Keanu Reeves), a computer hacker who discovers that humans have been enslaved in a simulation engineered by AI machines, Reloaded catches up six months later with Neo’s journey alongside Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus as they battle the Machine Army. THR’s review was lukewarm but noted that Fishburne “handles well the transition to...

The best things come in threes, especially stories. In Western nations, we like a three-act structure in which we set a status quo, watch our heroes fall, and then see them return to greatness. Some of these stories cannot be held within a single movie. For those epics, those monumental narratives, the movie trilogy was born. Trilogies represent some of the best that cinema has to offer, movies that changed the culture and the art form. The trilogy might vary in quality from film to film, but together these three films tell a story that cannot be ignored.
Before we get too far, let’s lay out our criteria. The trilogies chosen here are those intended to be a trilogy, either from the outset or by the end of the third film. Thus we’re including things such as the Toy Story and Indiana Jones trilogies, even though those continued on with further entries.

Warner Bros. is heading back into The Matrix, and this time Drew Goddard is leading the charge.
Goddard, the fan-favorite writer-director whose credits include The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods and World War Z, has been tapped to write and direct a new Matrix feature for the studio, Warners announced Wednesday.
This will be the first The Matrix film not to directly involve creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski, though Lana Wachowski will act as an executive producer on the new installment.
Plot details are being kept hidden on the Nebuchadnezzar, though the studio said Goddard approached the company with a new take to extend the franchise.
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own...

We’ve had sharks in an underwater lab, a grocery store, a river, sand, and snow, as well as toxic sharks and ghost sharks. So what could possibly be left to do with sharks that hasn’t been done before? Take the concept of putting our sharp-finned friends in a plane and mix that in a blender with a disaster flick premise to serve you No Way Up from Rlje Films.
A flock of birds fly into the engine of a plane carrying a small group of people to Cabo, causing it to nosedive into the ocean. Too bad this plane was not piloted by Sully Sullenberger to help with a safe landing. Due to the initial impact of hitting the water or straight up drowning, most of the passengers are killed in the descent; especially one unfortunate soul who shows why you should not head to the bathroom when...

Only '90s kids raised in video stores — or, more likely, their dads — will recall Luis Llosa's 1993 military thriller "Sniper" with any clarity. "Sniper" stars Tom Berenger as Master Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Beckett as he becomes lost in the jungle while trying to complete an assassination mission with a militarily inexperienced sharpshooter played by Billy Zane. The bulk of the film takes place in the woods of Colombia, although it was shot in Australia. The film was well-liked but critics noted that it was pretty generic; Roger Ebert gave "Sniper" three stars, noting that it was competent but lacked originality. The film boasts a 38 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but that comes from a mere 13 reviews.
What only fans of "Sniper" might know is that Tom Berenger returned to play Thomas Beckett in Craig R. Baxley's "Sniper 2" in 2002 and P.J. Pesce's "Sniper 3" in 2004. These two sequels...

3D Realms unveiled a whack of new titles at their Realms Deep 2023 showcase over the weekend, as well as offering up updates for previously-announced games. That of course includes a whack of new trailers to ogle, so here’s a small rundown of the titles featured during the 4-hour show (which you can rewatch here). The showcase is also coinciding with the Realms Deep 2023 Steam sale for several 3D Realms titles, which is on now until October 3rd.

This post contains spoilers for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."
The second and third movies of the Spider-Verse series were originally intended to be titled "Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)" and "Across the Spider-Verse (Part Two)," and from the finished product of "Across the Spider-Verse," you can certainly tell. As brilliant and creative as this movie is, it's very much half of a larger story. Audiences in my theater groaned when that "To be continued..." flashed across the screen, but if we were being honest with ourselves, it was clear throughout the final hour that there was no way everything would be wrapped up by the end of the film.
This is hardly the first major blockbuster in recent years to pull this trick, to be a "Part One" type of movie without including any "Part One" in its title. The marketing for 2021's "Dune" certainly could've been a little clearer...

Spoilers for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" follow.
There was a brief trend in blockbuster filmmaking in the mid-'00s that produced some of the most overblown sequels ever. "The Matrix" and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies were initially big and unexpected hits, each of them rattling the zeitgeist in their own way. Rather than merely make traditional sequels, however, both "The Matrix" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" offered audiences gigantic two-part mega-sequels, released as two separate features.
The Wachowskis' "The Matrix Reloaded" was released in mid-May of 2003, with a sequel, "The Matrix Revolutions," due the following November. The two films locked together in a massive, sprawling action spectacular that would expand "The Matrix" to apocalyptic territory. "The Matrix" was already a fascinating and heady sci-fi epic that flirted with revolutionary action filmmaking, ideas of gender euphoria and identity, and Cartesian existentialism.

Actor Laurence Fishburne has often had nothing but kind things to say about his experience in the sci-fi series The Matrix. But he wasn’t too shy to admit that the sci-fi franchise could perhaps improve in certain areas.
Laurence Fishburne expected ‘The Matrix’ sequels to get negative reviews Laurence Fishburne | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
The first Matrix movie is highly regarded in the film community. Apart from garnering rave reviews from critics at the time, to this day many see it as one of cinemas best movies. Rolling Stone, for instance, ranked The Matrix as #15 in a list ranking the greatest films of the 90s.
However, the Matrix sequels didn’t seem to meet the same kind of acclaim as the first. The second film, Matrix Reloaded, was the most financially successful of the three according to The Numbers. But it didn’t attract the same praise that The Matrix enjoyed.

Achieving continued success in Hollywood is never easy, and ultimately comes down to relationships. Director Chad Stahleski has been at the helm of every entry in the "John Wick" franchise including the upcoming "John Wick: Chapter 4," but his connection to star Keanu Reeves dates all the way back to "The Matrix." Stahleski worked as Reeves's stunt double in the original sci-fi action epic, also standing in as Neo in "Reloaded" and "Revolutions," then continuing to double the actor in the football comedy "The Replacements" and 2005's "Constantine." Stahleski was also the martial arts choreographer for Reeves's directorial debut "The Man of Tai Chi" — the movie responsible for gifting us with the memorable line "You owe me a life."
Reeves returned the favor when Stahleski stepped behind the camera to direct "John Wick." The revenge-fueled neo-noir epic helped redefine American action films, spawning four sequels by the time John Wick...

No two Matrix movies are alike. We remember the original as a revolutionary cyberpunk action film that introduced audiences to “bullet time” and the “wire fu” action sequences of the East. But The Matrix sequels weren’t just more of the same: The Matrix Reloaded is in many ways a superhero fantasy with the kind of CG spectacle we take for granted in the Marvel age. Meanwhile, The Matrix Revolutions could best be described as a manga and anime-inspired mecha horror movie, an absolutely twisted conclusion to the story that feels like the Wachowskis’ answer to the equally controversial The End of Evangelion.
Now, almost 20 years after the end of the original trilogy, how do we describe The Matrix Resurrections, a legacy sequel that’s at once a nostalgic look back at 1999 as well as a standalone continuation of Revolutions? Simply put: this is a love story, within an action movie,...

Back when most blockbuster movie franchises became standalone trilogies and not cinematic universes, The Matrix Revolutions seemed like a definitive end to Neo’s story. He’d struck a deal to save Zion from the Machines and deleted Hugo Weaving’s infinite Smiths once and for all. But what had it cost him? His sight, his life, and losing the woman he loved. It was a bittersweet end to The Wachowski’s magnum opus, but a conclusion nonetheless.
Until now. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their respective roles as Neo and Trinity for The Matrix Resurrections, which is directed by Lana Wachowski, who wrote the script with novelists David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon. The unlikely sequel is billed as a revival, not a reboot, and will also bring back Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian, and Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson.
