After Jim Samples, the Cartoon Network executive who oversaw the greenlighting of such successful cartoons as "Samurai Jack," "Ben 10," "Codename: Kids Next Door," and "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy," left, a new regime at the popular animation-focused cable channel changed tactics. When Stuart Snyder took over in mid-2007, he had a brand new mandate for Cartoon Network — no weird stuff.
Speaking with Buzzfeed, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" creator Thurop Van Orman recalled Snyder saying, "'We don't want anything weird or anything where any mom would come out of the kitchen and say, 'What are you watching?'"
Now, this is not to say that Snyder failed at that command, or that his definition of the word "weird" is different than this writer's, but his tenure was filled with shows you could call "weird" and would make a mom say "What are you watching?"

Horror fans have to start somewhere. You don’t just watch a VHS copy of Cannibal Holocaust and immediately start loving the genre (or at least I hope not), and that’s why Gateway Horror is so important. Like training wheels for spooky media, these stories are meant to introduce audiences to the recurring tropes and iconography of the genre without necessarily resulting in nightmare fuel. That being said, a lot of horror fans mistake that sentiment for Gateway Horror not being allowed to be scary, which simply isn’t true.
The ideal Gateway Horror story works on multiple levels, with creepy elements light enough to avoid traumatizing the casual viewer but ideas scary enough to entertain even the most jaded of horror hounds. To me, the perfect example of this exceedingly difficult balance is Cartoon Network’s Over the Garden Wall, a 2014 mini-series that explores the horrors of the Unknown through innocent eyes.

Peter Browngardt, Emmy-winning creator of “Uncle Grandpa” and “Secret Mountain Fort Awesome,” has signed an exclusive, multiyear, cross-studio overall deal with Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios. He will develop and produce original animated programming for a variety of audiences, including pre-school, kids, adult and family/co-viewing. Under the terms of the pact, Browngardt, who currently serves as executive producer on the HBO Max series “Looney Tunes Cartoons,” will be allowed flexibility to develop material for all WarnerMedia platforms, as well as external outlets and services. He will also have access to extensive character and franchise libraries at both studios.
“This inaugural cross-studio deal is one example of how we intend to meet the growing demand for animated content by being innovative, in not just our storytelling, but in the opportunities we provide to creatives in our industry,” said Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. The Angry Birds Movie 2 is arriving this summer, led by Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Bill Hader, Leslie Jones and Peter Dinklage.
The Angry Birds Movie 2 is coming this summer!
2016 predecessor The Angry Birds Movie may not have troubled the Oscars, but, with the film having grossed $352 million globally at the box office, we can’t imagine there’s too much disappointment. Moments of the film itself – which adapts Rovio’s global phenomenon of an app game – spark into a bit of life, which made the news that Sony Pictures Animation was working on a sequel not exactly surprising.
However, The Angry Birds Movie 2 will arrive under the purview of a first-time feature director in Thurop Van Orman, a writer from Adventure Time and The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. He worked off a script by Peter Ackerman, who also – in a major genre...

Ryan Reynolds will reportedly voice the title character in the new Pokemon movie, Detective Pikachu...
Well, here's an odd one: a report suggests that Ryan Reynolds, currently best known as the Merc with a Mouth in Deadpool, is set to play the title character in the forthcoming Detective Pikachu movie.
Originally a spin-off game from the main Pokemon franchise, Detective Pikachu's unusual in that its rodent sleuth can actually talk full English - you know, rather than just repeatedly stating bits of his own name like Ash Ketchum's sidekick. In the game, Pikachu has a curiously gruff voice, at least in the Japanese edition; at any rate, he joins forces with a kid named Tim in an effort to solve mysteries.
Right now, we're struggling to imagine Reynolds playing Pikachu - the Hollywood Reporter states that the role will be motion captured,...

Every day, more and more films are added to the various streaming services out there, ranging from Netflix to YouTube, and are hitting the airwaves via movie-centric networks like TCM. Therefore, sifting through all of these pictures can be a tedious and often times confounding or difficult ordeal. But, that’s why we’re here. Every week, Joshua brings you five films to put at the top of your queue, add to your playlist, or grab off of VOD to make your weekend a little more eventful. Here is this week’s top five, in this week’s Armchair Vacation.
5. Doomsdays (VOD)
While post-apocalyptic action films seem to be all the craze in modern action cinema, few genres have taken to the moments before the apocalypse, let alone comedic ventures. However, from director Eddie Mullins comes this self described “pre-apocalyptic comedy,” Doomsdays. The film introduces us to two roaming squatters named Dirty Fred and Bruho,...

Not too long ago, "Adventure Time" was a quirky program on Cartoon Network with a steady cult following. Now in its fifth season, the animated effort based on a 2008 short by creator Pendleton Ward -- in which adolescent Finn and his talking dog pal Jake going on fantastical trips through the bizarrely colorful post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo -- has started to look like one of the biggest television phenomenons of the decade. At New York Comic Con last weekend, dozens of attendees outfitted like characters from the show could be spotted throughout the massive Javitz Center. Ward and his colleagues received a rock star welcome at their panel. But does the bulk of the enthusiastically obsessive "Adventure Time" fandom miss the depths of the show, ones that likely have nothing to do with its ascension to blockbuster heights? "Adventure Time" first garnered attention when Ward, formerly an animator on "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack,...

Get your Finn ski caps on your head and your toy Golden Swords of Battle in hand because the fourth season of Adventure Time begins tonight. We spoke with creator Pendleton “Pen” Ward, who also voices Lumpy Space Princess. Ward previously worked on The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and is heavily influenced by The Simpsons, Hayao Miyazaki, The Adventures of Tintin, and David Lynch to name a few. That last one explains a lot, actually. See what Pen had to say about the upcoming season and creating a show that’s funny to him and how that in turn becomes funny for a kid.
What can you tell us about Season 4?
Pw: It’s funny. It’s weird. Each season gets a little more weird and hilarious. You’ll see today at the panel, we’re going to play a clip where it’s little episodes within an episode, which I think is awesome.

Carlsbad - LEGOs…those colorful blocks that snap together so easily. Many view them as a childhood toy, but they’re serious fun among collectors and adult builders. They can vacation at the American LEGOland. They can get those rare pieces at Lego stores across the country in malls. Lego video games featuring Star Wars, Batman and Indiana Jones are all the rage. Keeping up with what’s happening in Lego is about as foreboding a task as your mother keeping up with your LEGOs.
Joe Meno organizes the Lego universe through BrickJournal magazine. The periodical announces upcoming products, events and how-to articles by top buildings. It’s a coffeetable magazine featuring all the Lego pieces your kids lost under the sofa. The pages are addictive even for someone mildly interested in Lego with illustrations that show how the plastic building blocks can snap into amazing works of art. For...

Disney Channel has greenlighted "Fish Hooks," its first animated series in three years.
The cable channel has ordered 21 episodes of the high school comedy, which mixes 2D digital animation and photo collage.
"Fish" revolves around party guy Milo (voiced by Kyle Massey); his neurotic brother, Oscar (Justin Roiland); and an overly dramatic goldfish, Bea (Chelsea Staub). They attend Freshwater High, a school submerged in a giant fish tank in the center of a local pet store. The series chronicles their daily lives as they deal with friendships, dating and sports as well as such atypical teen issues as giant lobster attacks and school field trips to the hamster cages.
"The 'Fish Hooks' team has created one of the most original, inventive animated series on television, bringing an ingenious twist to the classic archetypes of high school life," said Gary Marsh, president entertainment at Disney Channels Worldwide. "Where else but in...
