- Actor Harry Pine reads for a small role as a police officer, and the director refuses to let him read for the lead role. Afterward, Harry goes home and drinks a beer, and looks at clipping of his girlfriend Morena Brue with headlines saying that she's an aspiring actress. Morena comes into the kitchen and asks how the audition went, and he says that it went badly. She says that she's sorry, and Harry says that he doesn't know why he's debasing himself in that kind of work when the show sucks.
The power goes out and Morena says that they should call the landlord. Harry doesn't respond, and Morena calls the landlord. Her boyfriend says that he didn't pay the bill, and Morena hangs up. She then asks Harry what he thought would happen, and he says that he didn't think they would just turn off the power. Harry tells Morena that he's working and has a plan, and Morena asks what his plan is so they can work on it together. Morena says that money and relationships take work, and he acts like he's entitled to it all. She tells Harry that she's tired of living with someone who can't be happy for her success, and Harry accuses her of not loving him anymore. Morena says that they need to talk, and Harry stares at her for a moment and then goes into the bedroom, closing the door behind him.
Harry gets a bag and comes back out, telling Morena that he's going to get his check for his manager. Morena tells him that it's not just about checks, and Harry goes out, walking down the street. He psychs himself up, saying he can do it, then goes into a bank and walks up to a teller. Harry pulls his scarf up over his face, draws a gun, and tells a teller, Jill, that it's a robbery and she should put all of her money into his bag. The teller hits a silent alarm and hands over the money, and the security guard calls over and asks Jill if everything is okay.
The guard sees Harry's gun, and Harry aims it at the guard and orders him down on the ground, along with everyone else. He turns and makes eye contact with Jill, and the two of them switch minds. Harry/Jill stares around her in shock, while Jill/Harry drops the gun, equally startled. A guard tackles Jill/Harry, and Harry/Jill takes the bag with the money and runs out.
Detective Frank Reece arrives and looks contemplatively a Jill/Harry, who has fainted.
Harry/Jill goes out the back, and one of Jill's co-workers Belinda greets her and talks about the robbery. When Harry/Jill tries to leave, Belinda points out that she can't leave with the money.
In the lobby, Reece gets call from his SO Barry and says that it's not a good time to talk. He then checks over the radio with Officer Luntz, who is checking the back. Luntz hears Harry/Jill and Belinda arguing and goes inside, and Belinda accuses Harry/Jill of stealing money. The officer tells them both to calm down, and Reece checks in with him. Luntz reports that he had a lady who trying to take the bag with the money, and he takes the bag. Harry/Jill makes eye contact with Luntz and switches bodies again, and Harry/Luntz backs out of the hallway into the alley outside. Reece asks him on the radio if he's bringing Jill out. Jill finds herself back in her own body, while Luntz in Harry's body tells Reece that he's right there and wonders why he's in handcuffs.
A puzzled Harry/Luntz walks down the street, still holding the bag, and Reece calls him on the radio to ask where "Luntz" is. He calls Morena and says that he sounds weird but he's really Harry. Morena figures that it's a crank call and hangs up, turning off her phone.
At the station, Reece has Luntz/Harry handcuffed to a table in an interrogation room. Another officer, Sgt. Hill, confirms that Harry has no priors, and Luntz hasn't called in. The money is gone as well, and the video from the bank shows that Harry/Luntz left with it. Reece and Hill both admit it would be out of character for Luntz to work with anyone to rob a bank. The detective tells Hill to find Luntz, and Hill leaves.
Harry/Luntz goes to a restroom and rehearses ways to convince Morena of who he is. He ends up practicing his acting as a police officer for the role he tried out for earlier.
Reece goes into the interrogation room and tells Luntz/Harry to start talking. Luntz/Harry says that he has no idea what is going on, and describes his family to Reece to prove who he is. Reece figures that he's good at research and figures that "Harry" is trying to set up an insanity defense. Luntz/Harry describes what happened to him at the bank, and then says that he knows something about Reece that Harry would never know: Reece's secret
Harry/Luntz goes to a coffee shop to order, and three policemen go by outside. They see Luntz and start to come in, and Harry/Luntz shoves the bag on the floor. When the barista, Blair, points out, Harry/Luntz grabs him by the shirtfront and makes eye contact with the man, swapping minds. The cops come in and ask the confused Luntz what's going on, while Harry/ Blair picks up the bag and walks out, as one of the officers notices and yells at him to drop the bag. Harry/ Blair runs out, and one of the officers chase him.
Harry/Blair keeps running, looking for someone suitable. He finally stops a jogger, John, gives him the bag, and makes eye contact, switching minds. The officer tackles the confused barista and handcuffs him, while Harry/John runs off with the bag.
At the station, Reece shows Jill the bank surveillance footage and points out that the blacked out while she tried to leave the bank with the stolen money. Jill insists that she doesn't remember any of it, and points out that the police have Harry in custody and he's the one with the gun. She suggests that maybe Harry hypnotized her, and insists that when Harry looked into her eyes, something happened.
Hill calls Reece out to the hallway and tells him that they found Luntz and he was a bit out of it. He claimed that he was at the station all morning talking with Reece, and Luntz handed the bag off to someone else and lost it in a foot chase. Reece goes back to the interrogation room and finds John/Harry yelling in confusion. He wonders what's going on, and wonders who he's looking at in the one-way mirror. John insists that Harry isn't him, and Reece asks him where he was before he found himself in the station. John/Harry says that he was jogging downtown and insists that his body isn't him. He asks what is happening to him, and Reece admits that he doesn't know but they're going to find out.
Harry/John buys some new clothes and practices how to introduce himself to Morena. He finds himself near a psychic storefront stop advertising "Find Out Who You Really Are", and a woman walking by saying the psychic, Keith, is a fraud. A police car passes nearby, and Harry/John ducks inside to get out sight. Keith is in the next room, and tells Harry/John that he's not who he appears to be. Keith comes out and says that Harry/John is pretending to be something he's not. He asks Harry/John if he knows who he is, and if he wants to find out.
Keith sits down with Harry/John and says that he can help him. Harry/John asks if they have psychic/client confidentiality, and Keith says that Harry/John isn't his client yet. When Harry/John takes some money out of the bag, Keith assures him that his secrets are safe. Harry/John tells him that he robbed a bank that morning to get money, and wonders if Morena is cheating on him. He says that they don't have enough money for their apartment and is afraid Morena is going to leave him.
Harry/John looks up through the skylight and sees a blue stuffed bear inside an apartment window above. Meanwhile, Keith says that it's rarely about business and asks if Harry/John is being generous with his empathy. He wonders why Harry/John doesn't look him in the eye, and Harry/John says that it's a bad idea. Harry/John explains his newfound power, and Keith wonders who he's talking to.
At the station, Reece gives John/Harry a glass of water and says that he'll have someone pick up John's daughter.
Harry/John says that he doesn't know whose body he's in, and he just needed an escape. Keith wonders where John is, and Harry/John admits that he's never thought about it. The psychic says that there's one way to find out. Harry/John makes eye contact with him, and Keith finds himself in Harry's body at the station. Keith is amazed at the experience, tells Reece who he is, and asks who he is. When Reece gives his name, Keith flirts with him and refuses to say where he was. He tells Reece that Harry isn't there and the detective is going to have to make a deal with him, and Reece first demands to know where he came from. When Reece threatens to throw Keith/Harry in jail, Keith/Harry tells him that Harry is at his shop and where it's at.
Harry swaps with John again, sending John's mind to Harry's body. John says that he was in his body, and doesn't know where he was. Reece tells John/Harry that they're both going to the psychic shop.
Harry/John asks Keith where he was, and Keith tells him that he was with a cop. The psychic realizes that Harry/John did what he claimed, and admits that he's a scam artist like Harry/John. Keith says that Harry/John is worse, because at least what Keith does makes him feel better. He tells Harry/John to stop being a dick, and he treats everyone who walks by him as a husk he can slip into. Keith says that Harry/John just treat Morena like a problem that needs solving, and tells Harry/John to get out before he drags Keith into his problems. The psychic shoves Harry/John out... and Harry/John inadvertently leaves the bag behind.
Out on the street, Harry/John realizes that he doesn't have the money. Keith has chained the gate on his shop shut, and Harry/John yells at Keith to give him the money back. That night, Harry/John calls in two officers and says that he left his bag inside. The officers ask what's in the bag, and Harry/John can only say that it's personal. One of the officers gets word that the police are looking for John, and the two officers step aside and then come back and ask Harry/John what his name is. He claims that he doesn't remember, and they ask if he was at the coffee shop earlier and if he was involved with the bank. Harry/John calls to a nearby punk dude, and when the punk dude looks over at him, Harry swaps his mind into his body.
Harry swaps minds with several people nearby, ending up in an old man named Martinez, and Harry/Martinez ends up in a man's body and goes into his apartment building. Harry looks for Martinez' keys, and a woman and her son come down and ask what he's doing. Harry/Martinez asks the mother, Sasha, if she could remind him what apartment he lives in. Sasha offers to call Martinez's doctor, and Harry/Martinez asks her not to. The mother gives him his apartment number, and Harry/Martinez sees the stuffed animal and realizes it was the same one he saw before and their apartment is neither the psychic shop. He tries to swap minds with Sasha but can't get a clear look at her eyes because of her glasses, so Harry/Martinez swaps with the son, Miles.
In the police car, Miles finds himself in Harry's body and panics. Reece serves as the Son/Harry screams in panic.
Harry/Miles tells Sasha that he's okay, and Sasha goes up to their apartment.
Miles tells Reece who he is, and Reece gets a call from a woman and tells her that it isn't a good time and he can't talk right now. Once Reece hangs up, he asks Reece where he lives.
Harry/Miles lies in Miles' bed and Sasha reads him a bedtime story. He quickly tells Sasha that he wants to go to sleep and she doesn't need to finish the story. Once Sasha leaves, Harry/Miles goes to the window and sees the shop below through the skylight. He opens the bedroom window and climbs down on a rope made from the bedsheets, breaks in, and looks for the bag. It's not there, and Reece comes in and trains his flashlight on the boy. Miles/Harry is with him, point at Harry/Miles, and says that's him.
Glaring at Reece, Harry/Miles tells him that he needs the money. He says that he doesn't know how he's swapping minds, and Reece tells him that it's over and tells Harry to switch back. Harry says that if he does, they'll send him to jail. Reece says that Harry will only do five years with good behavior, and he needs to give Miles his body back. Harry/Miles agrees and comes over, and tells Reece that he doesn't want his body back even though Miles should have his body back. After making eye contact with Reece, there's a three-way swap and Miles is back in his own body. Reece is in Harry's body, and Harry is in Reece's.
Harry/Reece draws his gun and tells Reece/Harry that he can do the five years. Miles hides behind a couch, and Reece/Harry tells Harry/Reece to think it through and asks if he's going to shoot his own body. Harry/Reece demands the money, and Miles yells at them to stop fighting. Reece/Harry grabs the gun from the distracted Harry/Reece and aims it at his own body, and tells Harry/Reece to give him his body back. Harry/Reece refuses, and the police burst in and see Reece/Harry with the gun... and shots ring out.
Later, Harry/Reece goes to his apartment and knocks at the door. Morena answers, invites him in, and Harry figures out that Morena knows Reece. She kisses Reece and says that Harry has been gone all night, and now the two of them can be together. Harry realizes that Morena was cheating on him with Reece, and says that from now on it's just the two of them.
Later, Harry/Reece auditions for a part. The casting director tells him that he's doing amazing work and it's like Harry/Reece really inhabits the characters. The director asks Harry/Reece to audition for the lead role.
