Nearly a decade ago, Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser was hanging out at one of Roger and James Deakins’ famous barbecues when he was introduced to a French-Canadian man he didn’t immediately recognize. But as soon as he put a face to the name “Denis Villeneuve,” he instantly called to mind two of the filmmaker’s critically acclaimed Canadian films, Polytechnique (2009) and Incendies (2010), as well as his American debut, Prisoners (2013), that he shot with the co-host of that day’s festivities, Roger Deakins. So Fraser and Villeneuve got to know each other that day, before going their separate ways for a few years.
During the intervening time period, Fraser photographed a handful of projects including the first Star Wars spinoff film, Rogue One (2016), as well as the first live-action Star Wars series in The Mandalorian. And then, in 2018, Villeneuve reached out regarding the Dp position on his forthcoming adaptation of...

Move over, Chris Pratt. The Lincoln Lawyer actor Manuel Garcia-Rulfo is a new leading man for Universal and Amblin’s latest Jurassic World movie. The next chapter in Universal’s dinosaur-run amock franchise already stars Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey, and Gareth Edwards is directing. Dinosaurs will rule the world again on July 2, 2025, when the film stomps into cinemas.
Edwards’s Jurassic World movie is a fresh start for the beloved franchise, with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard not expected to return. The next installment also leaves the original trilogy’s stars, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, in the rearview. David Koepp, who wrote Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park, is penning the screenplay. Other stars rumored to be up for roles are Dev Patel (Monkey Man) and Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead), though nothing is confirmed.

In 2021, Mdou Moctar told Rolling Stone, “My music is going to become more inspired by revolution.” That promise was truth in advertising. For more than a decade, the Tuareg guitarist/singer-songwriter, who fronts the band that shares his name, has been staking out a space as a radical guitar innovator as well as a fearless spokesman for his strife-riven homeland of Niger. As he asks in Tuareg on the opening track on his band’s excellent new LP, Funeral for Justice, “Dear African leaders, hear my burning question/Why does...

Behind the scenes, director David Leitch and producer Kelly McCormick have been instrumental in the movement for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts to recognize stunts. The director-producer husband-wife team hasn’t been shy in using their new film, “The Fall Guy,” a love letter to stunt professionals, to advance the cause. And it’s a cause that is increasingly looking like it will become a reality; a significant victory came last spring with the creation of the new Production and Technology Academy branch, which includes stunt professionals and therefore supplies the necessary pathway to a Best Stunt Design category at the Oscars.
“We’ve always been in the shadows, [but] that’s not the problem,” Leitch said when he was a guest on an upcoming episode of the Toolkit podcast to discuss “The Fall Guy.” “That was maybe the misconception for the Academy, ‘Well, these guys want awards because they...

Science fiction not only aspires to tell stories that predict the future and the moral lessons that come from an uncertain path, but much of science fiction is also inspired by the current climate of culture. After movies like The Creator from Gareth Edwards, we may be seeing an influx of AI-related stories. The upcoming Atlas from Netflix has Jennifer Lopez fighting her own war in an exo suit that is run by an AI program that Lopez must trust in order to survive. The new trailer has now premiered online courtesy of Netflix.
The official plot synopsis from Netflix reads,
“Atlas Shepherd (Jennifer Lopez), a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it.

A few days ago, Fangoria ran an article on character actor Ralph Ineson, whose credits include The Witch, The First Omen, Brahms: The Boy II, The Creator, Willow, The Green Knight, and much more, naming him “a modern horror icon.” Ineson took to social media to thank Fangoria for their kind words – and in response to Ineson’s post, director Guillermo del Toro revealed that Ineson has a “pivotal cameo” in his latest film, Frankenstein! He added that Ineson is amazing and fun to work with.
Ineson responded to del Toro, saying, “Thank you Boss, your set is a joyous place to be.”
Del Toro’s Frankenstein, which is a long-awaited passion project for the filmmaker, might have the following logline: Set in Eastern Europe in the 19th Century, the story of Dr. Pretorius, who needs to track down Frankenstein’s monster- who is believed to have died in a...

Universal and Amblin aren’t wasting any time revamping the dinosaur-centric “Jurassic World,” “Jurassic Park” franchise, as the two studios are looking to begin shooting the seventh film in the series. To be directed by Gareth Edwards (“Rogue One,” “The Creator”) and already starring Scarlett Johansson (“Black Widow,” “Marriage Story“), Deadline reports that Jonathan Bailey (“Bridgerton,” “Fellow Travelers”) is in early talks to join “Jurassic World 4,” which has been described as a soft reboot without any characters or actors from the other films expected to appear (although that could change).

Following reports suggesting Dev Patel might be joining Scarlett Johansson in Jurassic City, more names are now in the casting mix.
Watching the film that may or may not be called Jurassic City come together in double quick time has been a fun process to observe. First David Leitch was directing, then he was out due to ‘creative differences’. Then, Gareth Edwards, the filmmaker behind Rogue One and The Creator was in, working on a script by original Jurassic Park writer, David Koepp.
Since then, Scarlett Johansson and Dev Patel are both rumoured to have signed up for the project which, unbelievably, is set to arrive in cinemas next summer.
While huge productions like this one aren’t well known for coming together quickly and then going on to be brilliant, we’re heartened by the stories that originally circulated suggesting that Universal was looking to fast track this production...

With the stage decorated by massive sets and a wrap-around screen depicting an idyllic desert scene, Tyler’s set was a theatrical triumph. The night’s surprise features began with Childish Gambino taking the stage for the Igor track “Running Out Of Time.” After that, A$AP Rocky helped deliver “Potato Salad” and “Who Dat Boy,” and Charlie Wilson loaned his voice to “Earfquake.”
A highlight of the set was its second-to-last song, “See You Again,” for which Tyler and Uchis dueted across the desert landscape.

Dev Patel is the latest actor who could be poised to join Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic sequel, which will also star Scarlett Johansson.
Dev Patel, who recently turned director and action star with Monkey Man, is said to be ‘in talks’ to co-star in Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Jurassic Park (or Jurassic World) reboot, which has been dubbed Jurassic City.
The report comes via the reliably connected Daniel Richtman (via World of Reel); if all goes to plan, then Patel will co-star alongside Scarlett Johansson – not to mention a number of CGI dinosaurs – in the upcoming film.
It’s likely we’ll be hearing one or two more similar casting announcements over the next few months, given that production is having to move at a fast pace on the next Jurassic film. Universal Pictures has already set itself a release window of July 2025, and filming is set to get underway at the...

We look ahead to Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic City, what it might be like, and how it connects to his very earliest work.
In the press tour for his 2023 sci-fi film The Creator, British director Gareth Edwards suggested that, after the bruising experiences of making 2014’s Godzilla and in particular 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, he wouldn’t rush to go back to studio filmmaking again.
Suggesting that both of those films had started production without finalised scripts, Edwards said as recently as January that “I have to concentrate on personal and original projects.”
This stance appeared to change rather abruptly just one month later, when Universal approached Edwards with the offer to direct the next Jurassic Park (or Jurassic World) sequel. Original director David Leitch had dropped out, and with the film’s production racing to meet a self-set 2025 release date, Universal Pictures needed a replacement in a...

Takashi Yamazaki, the Japanese filmmaker behind Oscar-winning smash hit “Godzilla Minus One,” has signed with CAA for representation.
“Godzilla Minus One,” on which Yamazaki served as writer, director and VFX supervisor, earned the first-ever nomination and win for a Japanese production in the VFX category at the Academy Awards earlier this month. The film beat strong contenders such as “The Creator,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” and “Napoleon.” The Oscar win also marked the second time in 55 years that a director won the VFX award.
“Godzilla Minus One” also became the third-highest grossing foreign language feature in the U.S. box office history.
Budgeted at $15 million, the film follows former Kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima (Kamiki Ryunosuke), who grapples with survivor’s guilt following World War II and the trauma of having been attacked by Godzilla. While he manages to build a life for his newfound family,...

When it comes to appreciation for visual effects, it’s often the blockbusters that get the most attention, as evidenced in each year’s Oscar nominees––in 2024, for example, The Creator, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Napoleon, and the deserved winner Godzilla Minus One. However, I often find it more interesting to see how smaller productions seamlessly integrate rather invisible visual effects in unexpected places.
Such is the case for Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar-winning Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest, which employed the team at One of Us, led by on-set Supervisor Bodie Clare, VFX Supervisor Guillaume Menard, and VFX Producer Harry Landymore. As one can see in a new VFX reel, much of the Auschwitz camp in the background is visual effects, along with the cremated remains in the water and even hanging laundry. Scarlett Johansson has found her next big franchise, and she's going to tangle with dinosaurs this time around. The "Black Widow" actor has officially entered talks to star in the new "Jurassic World" movie currently in the works at Universal Pictures. The project has been coming together very quickly behind the scenes in recent weeks. Should Johanson sign on the dotted line, it would provide some major A-list power to the proceedings.
The InSneider first reported the news a couple of weeks ago, but The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed the development. There are currently no details on the character Johansson would be playing in the "Jurassic" universe. The indication is that this is going to be a fresh start for the franchise that could pave the way for a new trilogy. It's not yet clear if the new "Jurassic World" movie will be a full-on reboot or something that...

Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson is confirmed to be “in talks” for Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Jurassic World sequel, dubbed Jurassic City.
Update: Just a brief update on this one, as it’s more of a confirmation than a blazing hot news story: various Hollywood trade outlets have confirmed that Scarlett Johansson is in talks to take the lead in Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Jurassic Park or Jurassic World sequel, currently dubbed Jurassic City.
Reports of Johansson’s involvement first surfaced on the 14th March, but now Deadline writes that it’s “looking quite solid” that the Black Widow star is at least talking about starring in the next Jurassic film. It’s a project that Universal is hustling through the pipeline quite urgently, with its release date currently scheduled for July 2025.
Rogue One and The Creator filmmaker Gareth Edwards is expected to start shooting on the sequel this summer.

The Jurassic World franchise is headed back to the big screen in 2025 with a brand new untitled movie, and THR reports that Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) is in talks to star.
Gareth Edwards (2014’s Godzilla, The Creator) will be directing the new installment, with original Jurassic Park writer David Koepp returning to write the screenplay.
Jurassic World returns to theaters on July 2, 2025. Stay tuned for more.
The new movie is expected to usher in a brand new Jurassic Era with Jurassic World cast members Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard not expected to return. Don’t expect the original trilogy’s Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neill, either. The new Jurassic World, from what we gather, plans to take the franchise in a new direction, with plot details under wraps.

Now, while Dominion was supposed to be the last movie in the series, but it was soon confirmed that a seventh film was in the works and as of today, we have some interesting casting rumors regarding the movie.
Back in January 2024, it was reported that a seventh movie was in the works, with the studio looking to do a soft reboot of the franchise; the film probably won’t erase the events of the two previous trilogies, but a fresh start is what the producers are looking for, which is why Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pratt, and Bryce Dallas Howard are not expected to reprise their roles.

According to the latest reports, the actress has been offered a role in the upcoming film in the franchise created by Gareth Edwards.

The fans were disheartened when Black Widow had an unfortunate end in Avengers: Endgame. The character made a massive contribution to Scarlett Johansson’s career. The King of Monsters finally has his share of Oscars glory.
In an ironic triumph of small over large, Japanese monster movie sensation Godzilla Minus One — which was made for only about $15 million — beat out four big-budget Hollywood tentpoles to win the best visual effects category. It’s the first time in decades that a non-u.S. studio film has won the category. Despite its deep influence on the history of visual effects in cinema, this year was the first time in the Godzilla franchise’s seven-decade history that it was nominated for an Oscar.
Godzilla Minus One was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also headed up the film’s VFX team, which included Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima. Godzilla Minus One created history on January 23 at the Oscars by being the first movie in the 70-year history of the Godzilla franchise to receive a nomination for Best Visual Effects. As of now, director Takashi Yamazaki, along with the rest of the crew, holds the distinction of being the first Japanese recipient of the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. A much-awaited win!
In addition to their exceptional work on Godzilla Minus One, Masaki Takahashi, Tatsuji Nojima, Kiyoko Shibuya, and Takashi Yamazaki were recognized with awards for Best Visual Effects. But the Academy recently faced criticism for treating a crew member of the 2023 Japanese epic Kaiju film disrespectfully, given that the member was having difficulty speaking English.

Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were the big Oscar craft winners March 10, each winning three awards. Christopher Nolan’s historical thriller about the atomic bomb grabbed cinematography, editing, and original score, while Yargos Lanthimos’ surreal “Frankenstein” gender-bender snagged costume design, production design, and makeup and hairstyling.
The rest went to “Godzilla Minus One” (visual effects), “The Zone of Interest” (sound), and “Barbie”. The lone “Barbie” win was a major disappointment for Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster, which was expected to also take costume design and/or production design for the inventive Mattel-inspired fashion and world-building.

It may have taken a full seven decades, but Godzilla is finally an Academy Award winner. Indeed, "Godzilla Minus One" was not only the first movie to be nominated for an Oscar in the franchise's long, storied history, but it also became the first one to win an award on Hollywood's biggest night. The win caps off a truly amazing run for a movie that kind of came out of nowhere to become a genuine breakout mainstream success story. More on that in a moment.

“Godzilla Minus One” already made history at the Oscars on January 23 when it became the first film in the Godzilla franchise’s 70 years to be nominated for Best Visual Effects. Now, director Takashi Yamazaki can claim the title of Japan’s first ever winner of the Best Visual Effects Oscar. Even more, this is the first Godzilla film to win an Oscar, period.
Yet even more history was by the Toho Studios production on March 10 at the 96th Academy Awards: director Yamazaki is also the winner of this particular Visual Effects prize, as he also served as the film’s visual effects supervisor. A director winning the Best Visual Effects Academy Award has only happened once more before, with Stanley Kubrick taking the honor in 1969 for “2001: A Space Odyssey” as VFX supervisor on that Best Picture nominee as well. (That’s also the only Oscar Kubrick won in his nearly 50-year-long career.

The team behind Godzilla Minus One brought their beloved character with them to the 2024 Oscars. The group walked the red carpet in shoes adorned with Godzilla sculptures gripping the heels, and holding figurines of the fictional monster inside the theater.
The Oscars red carpet isn’t the first place the figurines have traveled this awards season. They were first seen in a video of the group learning they earned a nomination, and later again at the Oscar nominees luncheon last month.

The Oscars red carpet isn’t the first place the figurines have traveled this awards season. They were first seen in a video of the group learning they earned a nomination, and later again at the Oscar nominees luncheon last month.

It's Hollywood's biggest night — and all the stars are out! Movie stars, that is! Yes, it's time for the Oscars, the yearly ceremony where Hollywood pats itself on the back for a job well done. And you know what? The nominees this year are pretty darn solid! Christopher Nolan's thriller-biopic "Oppenheimer" leads the pack with a whopping 13 nominations. Will this finally be the year Nolan takes home Oscar gold? It sure seems that way — but you never know. There could be some surprises in store. Follow along with us here at /Film as we bring you the winners of the 2024 Oscars in real time. We'll be keeping this post updated throughout the night, so put on your tux and/or gown and get ready for all the glitz and glamor of a potentially boring awards ceremony!

My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.
“Oppenheimer” has won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Surely Oscars domination is next, right?...

One man is preparing for a “quite unbelievable” Oscars night, having found himself nominated three times this year in the same category.
Special effects supervisor Neil Corbould is up against himself twice over, after being recognised in the category for his work on three movies – Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, The Creator and Napoleon.
Corbould has two previous Oscars to his name – for Gladiator and Gravity. He told the BBC that this year’s close-to-hand competition could be “the kiss of death,” and said:
“I might have three seats and have to play musical chairs!” The best part? “I get invited to three different after parties.”
Corbould has been working in the film industry for nearly five decades, having followed his uncle into special effects. Colin Chilvers previously won an Oscar himself, for his work on the 1978 movie Superman. He also worked on The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Condorman...

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, on the eve of Sunday’s Oscars, we debate the closest categories and ponder last-second changes.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve reached the end of the long road. The Oscars are Sunday night, and there are still a handful of categories that vex me. I’m terribly vexed. You’ll be unsurprised to know I already switched to “The Creator” in Best Visual Effects with deep apologies to Godzilla and Rocket Raccoon. I just kept looking at the previous winners in that category — especially “Inception,” “Interstellar,” “Ex Machina,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Tenet,” and “Dune” — “The Creator” feels right. I’m also almost ready to split Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. When we did our “final” picks this week,...
