R.I.P. Quibi, again.
It seems even the Roku Channel is not free from The Great Streaming Purge of the 2020s. According to a report in Variety, over 35 notable Roku Original shows are to be removed from the streaming service sometime in the near future. This comes after multiple other services have removed shows and movies, many of them high-profile releases, from their feeds in order to cut costs. HBO Max — now merely Max — infamously removed a lot of their original films back in August of 2022, while multiple TV shows and movies were taken off of Hulu and Disney+ in May of 2023 for similar reasons. One might assume that a free, ad-supported service like the Roku Channel would be free from the caprices of the streaming market, but that is not so. The line of Roku Originals will be brought to an end.
Roku Originals, some may recall, were not Roku originals.

Exclusive: Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Archie Gips’ production company Unrealistic Ideas is teaming with producer Van Echeverri for a documentary feature about the FBI’s takedown of USC football player-turned-drug kingpin Owen Hanson.
“Unrealistic Ideas has a strong track record in the true-crime space, and the story of Owen Hanson jumped out at us,” said Unrealistic Ideas President/Partner Gips. “This is a working-class guy who worked hard to get into USC and then used the business skills he gained through his education there to create a global drug empire. We’re looking to explore how that happened and how it all fell apart.”

Quibi, the new short form streaming service that launched on April 6, was downloaded by 1.7 million users last week.
Quibi CEO Meg Whitman discussed the Quibi downloads and the celebrity-fueled streaming service’s future in interviews on CNBC and Fox Business Monday morning. Whitman said the week one download number exceeded the company’s expectations and she added that 80 percent of viewers who started watching a show completed at least one episode. Like most other streaming services, Quibi — which releases episodes that are exclusively 10 minutes or less — does not regularly release viewership data.
