Whether playing Di Kate Fleming in Line of Duty or a back-against-the-wall bomb disposal expert in ITV’s Trigger Point, Vicky McClure has mastered the art of procedurals over the years.
But in Paramount+ series Insomnia from The Crown producer Left Bank, in which she plays a career woman, Emma, who experiences a breakdown when she suddenly stops being able to sleep, the actor-producer bucked the trend.
“I feel like I’ve grown up, I’m 40 now,” McClure told an Insomnia Q&a in London late last month. “There’s a lot of procedural drama that I do and I enjoy it, but I was excited to step into something that felt different.” McClure added that she quite enjoyed walking in heels for the entirety of the series, for example.
McClure’s challenge was made trickier by the fact she has never suffered from insomnia – although “just a bad night...

Created by Daniel Brierly and produced by Htm Television, co-owned by Jed Mercurio, behind “Line of Duty” and “Bodyguard,” “Trigger Point” turns on members of a bomb disposal squad led by explosives officer Lana Washington (Vicky McClure).
Washington is back from Estonia, training Ukrainian bomb disposal operatives, having suffered post-traumatic stress disorder after the high body count of Season One. Almost immediately, there’s an explosion at the local power plant and Washington is the nearest expert. But can she hold her nerve?

Barry Pepper takes the lead in feature film “Bring Him to Me,” which is now shooting in Queensland, Australia, under director Luke Sparke (“Occupation Rainfall”). The picture is a mob thriller written by Tom Evans and which also stars Sam Neill and Rachel Griffiths.
Under orders from a ruthless crime boss, a getaway driver must battle his conscience and drive a young and unsuspecting passenger to an uncertain fate. Evans’ script was inspired by the traumatic scene in Martin Scorsese’s “Casino” in which Nicky Santoro (portrayed by Joe Pesci) unwittingly turns up for a meeting in a cornfield and things go South.
“I’ve been fascinated by morally gray stories like ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Drive,’ so when presented with the chance to dive deep into the underworld, I couldn’t resist bringing my own flavor to the genre, toeing the lines of film noir and graphic novels,” said Sparke.

Time is a funny thing. A constant that on occasion appears to move at great pace, and at other moments with a glacial trickle. But all my preconceptions about the apparent mutability of time have been thrown out the window with this season of House of the Dragon. Time has moved in a hop, skip and a jump, with actors replacing actors replacing actors. And all the same, despite another six-year gap before this week’s episode, “The Lord of the Tides”, most of these beautiful characters haven’t aged a day. There must be something in the Westerosi water.
Turn of the tides
One person who has aged a day – and quite a lot more – is Paddy Considine’s Viserys. The fact that he’s held on this long, despite viewers witnessing his rotting wound in the first episode (very much like coughing in Act One), is a medical miracle.

Aren’t we all sick to the teeth of British crime thrillers by now? The major broadcasters – BBC, ITV, Channels 4 and 5, they’re all to blame – have whittled down the genre to a slick, revoltingly homogenous formula. Just switch out a few proper nouns, spin a wheel to decide who the killer is, and roll film. The Suspect, ITV’s latest five-episode mystery drama, is made in exactly this mould – if you’d told me I was watching Vigil, or Trigger Point, I’d have believed you. But does that make it bad? Not necessarily.
At the centre of The Suspect is Aidan Turner, playing Joe O’Loughlin, an eminent clinical psychologist whom we meet as he talks a young brain tumour patient down from a ledge. In an instant, he becomes the “rooftop hero doctor” to the world. Privately, however, he’s struggling with a recent diagnosis of early-onset Parkinson’s disease.

Nearly every streaming service has its own personality and strengths, and I’ve come to depend on Peacock for quick jolts of suspense with an international flavor in European imports including The Capture (deep-fake skulduggery), Trigger Point (a bomb squad), and Vigil (murder on a nuclear sub), each six taut episodes a season, providing that 24 vibe of urgency. The newest Peacock nail-biter, The Undeclared War, is more of an intellectual thriller that tries to get pulses racing by watching code upload. Set in the U.K.’s cyber-focused Gchq intelligence agency, War presents a nightmare scenario of Russian hackers and bots interfering in an election, sowing chaos through high-tech fakery. This is not meant to be background viewing, a point underscored by setting most of the third episode in Russia (with subtitles), where we follow a young programmer (who’d rather be an ...

The first look image from My Mother’s Wedding, the directorial debut from Kristin Scott Thomas, has been released. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, and Emily Beecham.
Principle photography on the film — which Scott Thomas co-wrote with John Micklethwait — has been completed. The film follows the story of three sisters who return to their childhood home for the third wedding of their twice-widowed mother, Diana. The three daughters now lead very different lives: Georgina, a palliative nurse; Victoria, a Hollywood star; and Katherine, a captain in the Royal Navy. Over the weekend, the family gathers to celebrate a new marriage, but mother and daughters alike are forced to revisit the past and confront the future, with help from a colorful group of unexpected wedding guests.
The cast includes Academy award nominee Scarlett Johansson, BAFTA award nominee Sienna Miller, and Cannes Best Actress winner Emily Beecham, who play the sisters. Academy award nominee and BAFTA award-winner Scott Thomas plays Diana Frost, their mother.
This marks the third time Scott Thomas and Johansson have played mother and daughter since 1998’s The Horse Whisperer.
“I have wanted to direct for a long time and it was thrilling to create this fictional family using my own childhood memories as a springboard,” said Kristin Scott Thomas. “Directing and acting with such talented actresses and reuniting with Scarlett Johansson has been exhilarating.”
The cast is filled out by BAFTA award nominee, Freida Pinto, Sindhu Vee, Joshua McGuire, Mark Stanley, Thibault de Montalembert and Samson Kayo.
Additional credits include director of photography Yves Belanger, BAFTA award-winning Production Designer Andrew McAlpine, Casting Director Lucy Bevan, Editor Gary Dollner, Costume Designer Sinead Kidao, and Academy award nominated Hair and Make-Up Designer Daniel Phillips.
CAA Media Finance, which arranged financing for the film, represents domestic rights.

Photo: ‘Trigger Point’ A Refreshing Take on the Classic Concept When thinking of most police or military action dramas or movies, the first thought that comes to mind for me, right or wrong, is using violence to achieve the goal of “saving the day.” We think of a brave armed service member or outnumbered officer shooting and outthinking their way out of a difficult and hairy situation, ala ‘Die Hard’, ‘Rambo’ or the most recent entry for television ‘The Terminal List.’ These shows are built this way because that makes them exciting and gives our characters, chiefly the protagonist, clearly defined stakes and an opportunity to root for them. ‘Trigger Point’ falls within the same sort of shared universe but is very far from being a carbon copy of one of those types of shows. Exclusive: Peacock is to be the U.S. home of ITV’s Jed Mercurio-produced thriller Trigger Point.
The high-pressured drama starring Line of Duty’s Vicky McClure and Life’s Adrian Lester follows the streamer’s acquisition of similar UK scripted shows such as BBC double The Capture and Vigil.
The NBCU streamer will launch the series on July 8.
Trigger Point, which was produced by Line of Duty creator Mercurio’s Htm Television and written by newcomer Daniel Brierley, stars McClure and Lester as frontline officers who must risk their lives during a terrorist campaign in the heart of London. When a terrorist campaign threatens the capital over one summer, the Expos are at the forefront of urgent efforts to find out who is behind the bombings before fatalities escalate.
With Mercurio’s reputation for ratings-grabbers preceding him, the six-parter performed extremely well with audiences, amassing almost 10M for some of its later episodes.
