Eddie Redmayne has reminisced on his acting career and the years before he earned his A-list status in Hollywood.
Prior to the 40-year-old British actor’s critically acclaimed roles in 2012’s Les Miserables, 2014’s The Theory of Everything, and 2015’s The Danish Girl, he starred in a number of films that weren’t as well-received.
Speaking to Vanity Fair about his latest thriller, The Good Nurse – in which he stars opposite Jessica Chastain – Redmayne discussed his earlier projects.
“The truth is, you do a load of work before anyone sees any of the work you've done,” the Oscar-winning actor admitted.
“So I did all these films for years. I did a film called Savage Grace with Julianne Moore, in which I played a guy called Anthony Bacon who killed his mother.”
While the 2007 true-crime drama received an unfavourable 38 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, Redmayne further remembered a 2011 drama/comedy, which...

Teenage Wasteland: Ellis & Martini Join Forces for Derivative Teen Angst
Check your expectations at the opening credits with The Curse of Downers Grove, a muddled teen scream mix of urban legend meets self-fulfilling prophecy metaphor. Many will be unable to bypass taking a look, however, upon learning the schlocky titled genre effort was penned by Bret Easton Ellis, his first cinematic project following the infamous and ultimately ill-fated Paul Schrader/Lindsey Lohan experiment The Canyons (2013). An ambitious thread of something greater sometimes resonates in this adolescent angst tale spiked with violence and a smattering of watered down sexuality (at least compared to what we know Ellis can imagine), but is ultimately lost in the tonally awkward jumps between genre elements and out-of-touch flourishes as concerns law-enforcement and teenagers.

"The Curse of Downers Grove" is an interesting twist in the career of young indie filmmaker Derick Martini. He came to acclaim with the family drama "Lymelife" with Alec Baldwin, Rory Culkin, and Emma Roberts. Martin Scorsese liked it so much he served as an executive producer. His follow-up “Hick,” with Chloe Moretz, Blake Lively and Eddie Redmayne -- a pretty notable cast -- ended up on many of year-end worst lists in 2011. Now Martini’s back with the teen horror “The Curse of Downers Grove.” Written by Bret Easton Ellis, the movie stars Bella Heathcote (“Dark Shadows”), “X-Men” actor Lucas Till, Kevin Zegers, Penelope Mitchell, Zane Holtz, Helen Slater, and Tom Arnold. Here’s the official synopsis: The town of Downers Grove looks like your average suburban neighborhood —but Downers Grove has a disturbing secret.... Whether you are a filmmaker, or one of the Sundance programmers whose task it is to identify the films that make up a line-up, it is indeed the most wonderful, panic-filled and nerve racking time of the year. The 31st edition of the Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 22nd with Park City and Salt Lake City playing host to some of the more innovative, thought-provoking narrative and non-fiction films of 2015. Last year, a Jenga tall order of 4,057 features and 8,161 shorts were submitted. Now let’s think about those numbers for a second.

Chicago – Portraying Stephen Hawking, as Eddie Redmayne did in “The Theory of Everything,” required an intense physicality and emotionalism that was projected from different angles, much more challenging than a usual biographical role. In this instance, Redmayne projects the feeling of Hawking’s time and space.
Eddie Redmayne has been on a quick ascension path in his film career, while also conquering television and theater in his native England. After notable roles in the last three years in “My Week with Marilyn” and “Les Misérables,” Redmayne has took on the difficult task of playing Stephen Hawking from a healthy, genius-level university student to the wheelchair bound and computer-voiced theorist with a degenerative nerve disease (Als, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease). The performance is remarkable on many levels, but especially in communicating the soul and love – beyond a physical handicap – upon which a human being exists.

If I was asked to name a young actor or actress that I thought was going to be a big deal in the coming years of cinema, I’d have a few to choose from, but one name at the top of that list would have to be Chloe Moretz. Her performances in films like Kick-Ass, Hugo and Let Me In have been memorable and she seems to just keep getting better as she gets older.
Hick, in which Ms. Moretz is the main star, is a funny sort of film. An independent movie filmed in 2011, prior to Hugo, Hick was made on a fairly small budget and directed by Derick Martini, a guy whose directing chops are limited, very limited. This made for an experience...

She may only be 16 years old but Chloe Moretz is certainly not afraid to take on mature roles. If you’ve seen her in Kick-Ass, Hick, Let Me In or in the trailer for the upcoming Carrie remake, you’ll know that she’s not intent on just playing it safe. Now, to push the envelope even further, she’s currently in talks to star as a prostitute in The Equalizer, which has Denzel Washington locked in for the lead role.
If she signs on, Moretz will play the female lead, a character named Teri. Apparently, director Antoine Fuqua was looking for an actress that was a bit older to take the part but Moretz recently participated in a table read for the role and blew everyone away. Of course, the character of Terri immediately draws parallels to Jodie Foster’s role in Taxi Driver and we can easily see...

Okay, we didn't see this coming. At all. At only sixteen years old, Chloe Moretz is already looking to push the envelope with the roles she'll take on, featuring in the grimy indie "Hick" (which by all accounts was pretty awful) while this fall she'll reign in terror as "Carrie." But taking the part of a young prostitute? Like we said, didn't see this one coming... Nothing is confirmed just yet, but Deadline reports that the offer has been made to Moretz to take the role of Teri, the female lead, in Sony's long developing "The Equalizer" with Denzel Washington set to star, and Antoine Fuqua to direct. No, this isn't the idea of some pervy studio exec, but Moretz participated in a table read for the part, and apparently impressed Washington and everyone else in the room. The part was originally slated for a twenty-something actor, but Moretz was...

When Eddie Redmayne heard there was going to be a film version of Les Miserables, the British actor knew he was destined to play the dashing battle hero Marius. "I was doing a film called Hick with Chloe Moretz and Blake Lively. We were shooting in North Carolina," the 30-year-old actor tells senior reporter Charles Thorp in the Dec. 31 issue of Us Weekly. "I sat in my trailer, dressed as a cowboy, and sang! Saying it now it seems really odd, but when I was there [...]...

To whoever is repping Eddie Redmayne as he makes his way into Hollywood: nice work. The actor has been taking a variety of roles, from the gritty indie "Hick," to the biopic "My Week With Marilyn" to this month's Oscar contending "Les Miserables," all allowing him to flex a few different muscles. And now that he's paid his dues and proved himself, he's getting into the tentpole game. After being in contention for roles in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Guardians Of The Galaxy," Redmayne will now team with The Wachowskis for their sci-fi flick "Jupiter Ascending." Co-starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, the film, which could kickstart a franchise, will center on a toilet-scrubbing Russian immigrant (Kunis) who actually has the same genetic makeup as the immortal Queen Of The Universe, and thus threatens her rule. A bounty hunter is then dispatched to take her down (Tatum), but they...

It seems like just yesterday that Serena van der Woodsen was coming back from boarding school to find that her former Bff, Blair Waldorf, had become Queen Bee. Tonight, TV's "Gossip Girl" comes to an end, leaving with it a slew of absurdly attractive young stars unemployed.
Of course, we've seen a number of them on to the silver screen already — including Leighton Meester "That's My Boy" and "The Oranges" and Blake Lively in Oliver Stone's "Savages."
Since the world of these privileged few thrives on competition, it only made sense to see which Gg star's movie career leaves the rest of the beautiful people in the dust. Read our (very scientific) rankings to find out, then weigh in yourself in our poll below.

As Marius in Tom Hooper's adaptation of Les Miserables, Eddie Redmayne's performance as the love-struck revolutionary is surprising audiences at early screenings of the eagerly-awaited film. The 30-year-old Brit's clear singing voice and passionate delivery of songs such as "In My Life" and "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" has earned him lots of Whoa, I didn't know he could sing buzz from gimlet-eyed film critics and Les Mis geeks alike. Carrie
Directed by: Kimberly Peirce
Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer
Rating: Not Yet Rated
Release Date: March 15, 2013
Trailer Score: 5/10
Thoughts by Tsr: Horror remakes are a fact of life, so I try to go into each one of them with something of an open mind. Sometimes that’s a bit more difficult. Take this new Carrie, for example. While some people involved give me a bit of optimism – I’m a fan of director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry), Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, and Chloë Moretz (more on her in a minute though) – this teaser doesn’t do much to get me excited.
The tracking shot through the city is sort of cool, if artificial, and I like the scale they’re going for. My favorite thing about this is the voiceovers talking about Carrie. They do a decent job ramping up tension as we fly over the carnage.

It seems a little sad to me that there is a new generation of young actors and filmmakers who have been essentially forced to rely on remakes for their big breaks, but I suppose if they play their cards right, they can turn these opportunities into something more. Chloe Moretz has done exactly that, having starred in Let Me In, Dark Shadows and now the upcoming remake of Stephen King's Carrie, but also mixing in movies like Kick-Ass, Hick and Hugo. While Carrie is yet another remake that has been met with criticism for being simply unnecessary, Let Me In is proof that these things can indeed turn out better than expected. The first trailer for the new Carrie has arrived online this week, and although it is only a teaser, it seems to hint that they are getting a lot more ambitious with the size and the scope of the story.

Once again, sixteen year old actress Chloë Grace Moretz has chosen a controversial role to perform. Moretz recently played a murderous child in Matthew Vaughn's Kick Ass. In Hick, she is provocatively dressed and she appears to be playing a lolita styled character. Abandoned by her parents, Luli (Moretz) hits the road for Las Vegas. Here, she hopes to meet a "sugar daddy" to take away the pain of her former life. However, she meets an assortment of hustlers and users on the open road. Will she even make it to sin city? Fans of dark comedies and thrillers will want to check this film out through Constellation TV's premiere event for Hick. This film will show online beginning tomorrow (Aug. 14th) and film fans can ask director Derick Martini questions about the showing. A link to this event is listed below along with the film's Red Band trailer.

Chicago – It’s understandable that people from the Southern or rural United States would criticize the general media. With films like “Hick,” which generally portray them as idiots or sociopathic, there is no balance or honest characterizations. Chloe Moretz, Blake Lively, Eddie Redmayne and Alec Baldwin add their take on it all.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
This is a strange and thoughtless film, with characters that meet each other one second, and become emotionally or too familiarly involved the next. It supposes that a 13-year old girl would get a gun for her birthday, and then hook up – Wizard of Oz-like – with a cast of stereotypes that will become her new family. Alec Baldwin plays a guy named Beau, which is all you need to know about the authenticity of this story.

Hick is an ugly piece work. The worst kind of bad. It’s a movie that believes it has something to say, but has nothing – a nothingess that comes after 90 minutes of misery. It’s a vapid mess about a girl who, despite encountering nothing but terrible acts, earns zero sympathy. That girl, Luli (Chloë Moretz), a 13-year-old kid from Nebraska, sets out to Vegas after being abandoned by her loony mother and drunk of a father. Her road trip goes the typical route: violence, rape, drug use, and robbery, everything you’d expect from a 13-year-old’s trip with a wasted Blake Lively. She comes from a world where a gun is a nice birthday gift for a kid, where 13-year-olds awkwardly quote Sunset Boulevard, and where Eddie Redmayne is forced to play a poor man’s take on Kit from Badlands, all these phony details are used to establish we’re in a dark and...

There would seem to be plenty to get excited about in Derick Martini’s second feature film, Hick (based on the novel by Andrea Portes). If the plot is not especially enticing (a young girl from a hick town leaves home, travels West, and experiences the evils of the world), then the cast certainly garners attention. Chloë Grace Moretz takes the lead, playing alongside Juliette Lewis, Blake Lively, Eddie Redmayne and Alec Baldwin. Moretz and Redmayne each starred in two major pictures from last year (Hugo and My Week With Marilyn, respectively), and their pairing here certainly makes for an intriguing...

Hick
Directed by Derick Martini
Written by Andrea Portes
USA, 2011
There ought to be a place for films in which young children are graphically exposed to the evils of the world. The problem is that if those films are mishandled in the least, the average audience member will feel like a child pornographer just by paying money to watch them. Derick Martini doesn’t mishandle every scene in Hick, but he blows enough of them to make any audience uncomfortable and a little bit dirty.
Chloe Grace Moretz (Hit Girl from Kick-Ass) plays Luli, a 13-year-old Nebraska girl caught between a pair of drunken, battling parents who are making the 1980s miserable for her. So she runs away, hitchhiking up Interstate 80 with a plan to go to Las Vegas. But her encounters with the crippled cowboy Eddie (Eddie Redmayne) and conwoman Glenda (Blake Lively) quickly send her on a different path.

Coming-of-age stories can be many things, but rarely are they pointless. It’s unfortunately the case with Hick. Chloe Grace Moretz plays Luli, a precocious teenage dreamer who decides to flee her dead-end white trash Nebraska life and, ostensibly headed for Vegas, falls in with a cast of even more dead-end characters who, while they do upend her life, manage to teach her (and us) nothing of any significance. One senses that director Derrick Martini and writer Andrea Portes (who also wrote the novel) have lofty ambitions here for a stylized journey of self-discovery, but it’s hard to reconcile that with the undigested hodgepodge of influences and story lines that winds up onscreen.Hick does have its moments. They’re mostly in the first half, and they’re mostly thanks to Moretz, who gives her undeveloped and mostly cliché character an inner life the movie probably doesn’t deserve.

So “The Avengers” knocked it out of the park, huh? With a $600 million intake worldwide and lots and lots of good reviews, Joss Whedon and the folks over at Marvel can probably even one-up James Cameron at the next Masters of the Hollywood Universe fete. (That sounds fun, doesn’t it? I’d go to a party like that.) This weekend is a little smaller, but looking good nonetheless. A number of foreign films that have done well in the festival circuit, and the latest eyefeast from Burton and Co. hit theaters today, providing quite a lot of competition – if not dazzling CGI and budget – for the massive blockbuster winner of last week. Let’s see how they measure up.

You don't have to be a movie genius to know who will rule the box office this weekend. With "The Avengers" wiping the floor with every other blockbuster ever, audiences will likely continue to assemble. However, if you think there's a little too much life in the Joss Whedon opus, its weekend competitor, "Dark Shadows," might be more to your taste. Tim Burton brings the peculiar tale of the Collins clan to the big screen. Johnny Depp stars as Barnabas Collins, a long-imprisoned vampire unleashed on the 1970s, where he discovers a colorful batch of dysfunctional descendants. Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter co-star.

Dark Shadows (1966) Check out the cult classic that started it all. Originally conceived as a moody melodrama, this groundbreaking gothic soap found success following the introduction of tormented vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid). From there the Collins family regularly crosses the paths of ghosts, werewolves, and witches. Oh my.
Edward Scissorhands (1990) Or revisit Burton and Depp’s first collaboration, the tale of a modern Frankenstein’s monster with scissors for hands.
